I am looking for a homemade shampoo recipe. With so many harmful chemicals in shampoo (even the expensive ones), I am interested in trying a more natural approach. The problem now is finding a good recipe? Any ideas? Thanks so much!!

Because I dont have time to make my own anything I buy all of my stuff. I do NOT buy anything that has chemicals or parabens etc. in them. I am extremely picky. I get all of my bath & body and house cleaning products from Neways International. I have found some other good products at Lush but you have to watch their ingredients because they do use parabens in some of their products. I am not home now to reference the book I am thinking of but I have one at home that is for essential oils and has recipes. I am out of state visiting family or I would have that info for you as well. If you visit www.purelybalanced.com and go to the links page there are sites there to help you with ingredients in products and the safety of products. The link for Neways is there as well if you want to check it out too. I use their shampoos and everything and since they are all unfragranced I add essential oils to make my own fragrance.

I absolutely understand about not wanting to use porducts with harmful chemicals in them. We do not often think about what goes on our skin also can be absorbed into our body. I use all Arbonne products for that reason. They have great shampoos and a conditioner. There is also a shampoo in the baby line that really helped my youngest daughter with her sensitive scalp. My whole family uses the products. As of a few days ago, there is now a whole line of SeaSource Detox Spa Line of products. One of the products in the Detox line is a Fortifying Hair Mask designed with botanicals to fortify the hair against environmental toxins and harsh climates with superb, hydrating formula that helps strengthen, condition, repair and revitalize the hair shaft for a lustrous, healthy shine. There is also a Detoxifying Rescue Wash that gently washes away impurities and potentially harmful surface toxins on the face, body and hair. I loved the products so much that after about a year of using them I decided to become an Independent Consultant with the company. If you would like to try a sample of the shampoo and conditioner then e-mail me at ____@____.com and I will be happy to mail you one. I am introducing the new Spa line at one of my color events where I am having a Regional makeup artist share his makeup tips on Saturday, April 26th if you would like to come just let me know. Good luck! I am also a mother of two beautiful girls ages 5 and 9 years old! My family keeps me busy but I now work part time thanks to my Arbonne business.

I don't know about making my own shampoo but I use all natural cleaning products. You can find it at www.youngliving.com. They have toothpaste, shampoos, conditioners, & soaps all made from essential oils, it is pricey compared to the CHEMICAL options but saving your body from harmful toxins is worth it.

Have you tried Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps?

You can find them at health food stores or order them online. I like the liquid soaps. My son loves the lavender! The Eucalyptus is great when your little ones are under the weather.

I applaud you for wanting to make your own shampoo! I'm sure you can find good recipes online.

Someone suggested dishwashing liquid, but unless you are using an all-natural one, you will be getting many of the same chemicals found in shampoos.

If you are interested, I have an online all-natural shoppe, A.'s All Natural Shoppe. I've been in business for almost 4 years, and I have several choices for shampoos. I also have safe household cleaning products, and other personal care products.

No need to make your own. Whole Foods has several different brands of all natural shampoos and conditioners. Most of them aren't even more expensive than grocery store shampoos.

A friend told me that she has used dishwashing liquid for years as her shampoo. I tried it and I see nothing wrong with it. I have used Ivory Liquid, Dawn and Joy thus far. If it cleans dishes why can't it clean your hair. I can tell no difference in using it instead of hair shampoo. Just thought you might like to try this.

C., I have noticed that some folks have mentioned Melaleuca. Melaleuca is the english name for Tea Tree Oil. It comes from Australia. It is all natural and has great healing powers. The shampoo is good for the hair for humans and our dogs and cats. The mouthwash will tighten up the gums and help get rid of any mouth problems. The home cleaning products can be used and even babies and little 4 legged critters can be around it, walk through it, etc and it not hurt them. A story about Melaleuca that folks should know is this. During WWII, Australian workers would get hurt working in the steel works, etc while making items for their military. The owners of the owners of the manufacturing plants took to putting tea tree oil on their machinery and all of a sudden folks were healing faster when they got cut or accidently stabbed by things. The Clinical Trials and studies will blow your mind about Melaleuca. You should check it out at Melaleuca.com. I think you will like it.

This might cause you to go "ewwww", but I know a few people who use vinegar as a rinse! There's a few "methods" to this one, apparently the secret is to find one that suits your hair type.
1) use a natural bar of soap or shampoo bar (http://usa.lush.com/cgi-bin/lushdb/index.html?lang=en_US&... - is one place I know that has it) & rinse with vinegar afterwards.
2) use only vinegar.
The people I know say that their hair is less frizzy, no fly-aways, and the smell vanishes once the hair is dry.
You could always look for some "melt & pour" start kits, this is for soap, but shampoo is just soap in liquid form with smelly stuff in it as well. (Hubby & I use shampoo bars and they work just as good as bottled shampoo.)
