Hi Moms,
I have a 4 year old daughter that has chronic sinus infections. She has been sick since she was born with ear infections, viral infections and sinus infections. She has taken antibiotics since birth too. She has been tested for allergies and is allergic to pollen and other enviromental allergens. Her father is asthmatic and believes in western medicine and taking allergy medicines. Now my little one is allergic to antibiotics, namely the penicillian family of medicines. The only one that she can use is a strong one, Biaxin. My questions is this, does anyone know of alternative medicines for pediatric allergies? I would like to stop this cycle without giving her all the drugs. The doctors are telling my to give her Singular daily along with a nasal spray called Veramyst. I am trying to avoid giving her more antibiotics because she has taken it so often. I don't want to harm her or have her suffer but I worry about the allergy medicine that is doled out so casually to children. Thank you for your help!

Locally grown honey will help her build up a resistance to environmental allergies. Do not give her anymore chemicals (antibiotics, or pharmacueticals). She probably has an overgrowth of candida in her system and needs to restore her friendly bacteria in her gut. Do research on how to do this. Or visit a homeopathic physician, although they cost a bit of money they are well worth it. You can do research online or borrow some good books from the library. Good luck

I have 2 daughters with allergies, 2yrs and 5 yrs, and started doing a few things. We do the nasal wash once to twice a day, depending on how the day goes. They both take claritin every morning. My 5 yr old was having chronic sinus infections, and we haven't had a problem. The biggest change I did, was we changed from regular milk to lactaid, or sometimes a store-brand lactose-free milk. I'm the last one to believe something so simple as lactose can make a difference, but we've had no sinus infections for the past year, still allergies here and there, but no infections. When I tried it, I thought, what's the worst that could happen, you have to give her at least 2 wks without regular milk for it to be completely out of the system. My oldest daughter also takes Nasonex in the spring and summer when her allergies are at their worst.I felt bad giving her a prescription, but she was so miserable without it. Good luck! :)

Hi S.,

Several ideas to share on this one. Dip Q tips in hydrdogen peroxide and clean her ears and nose. This kills germs and can also bring out earwax buildup. The only caveat I have found is that the nasal passage can get dried out doing this over time so you may want to use a dab of light organic oil as a follow up measure.
Silver works like an antibiotic with the exception that bugs don't seem to get immune to it. There are silver nasal sprays available. Know that probiotics will have to be given her with this just as with prescription antibiotics. Neither kill just the bad bugs so you'll need to insure her immune system gets renewed.
Sabadil is a homeopathic allergy remedy that I use and have found to work well. You can probably find something more suited to your child guided by her symptoms. These remedies are designed for specific symptoms.
Antibiotics kill bugs, but in the process destroy the immune system. If the immune system cannot kill bugs, then more antibiotics become necessary and the cycle gets worse and worse.
Also, using Ravensara in a vapor in her bedroom while she sleeps or rubbed on her chest so she breathes it in is a very gentle and effective remedy for all of us with bacterias and viral issues.
Has she been tested for allergies and sensitivities? What has been done to boost her immune system? Lots of questions to ask. The answers may lead you to a better path for her.

My son also had chronic sinus infections for most of his life. He is now 11, and it seems this is the first year when he has been really healthy. We were advised to use Singular daily and did for awhile, but we didn't really like the idea much. We turned to using the NeilMed sinus rinse. It was difficult in the beginning, but my kids both ended up really enjoying the benefits of it. You can also make a homemade rinse, but the NeilMed is just saline and it works really well. Good luck, and I hope your daughter outgrows her infections as my son did.

S.-
As a child I had horrible allergies to all kinds of things (grass, evergreens, dust, smoke, and bananas mostly). My mother had a very hard time getting me to take medicines of any kind because I would always end up having a reaction to those as well.
When I graduated high school I found a new homeopathic doctor that switched me over to a product called Lactobacilus Acidopholous. This is a helpful bacteria that is commonly found in natural yogurts, but also comes in liquid and pill forms. She told me it would take about a week to notice a huge difference but that I would not feel that weight in my chest anymore. She said that if I took the pill form that I should take it with a glass of water containing 1T of apple cider vinegar and 1T local honey.
I had tried everything from nasal lavage (made me really dizzy and nausious for days because some of the water settled one my eardrums) to Singular, Tavist D, Claritin, and a few others that were popular in the 70's. Nothing worked as well as the Acidopholus did, nothing.
I have switched the whole family to acidopholus milk and all natural yogurt in the hopes that my 4 children do not develope any alergies and so far it has worked (knock wood).

I hope this helps!

Hi-
Homeopathic treatment can really help & also acupuncture (not necessarily with needles, but with pressure points), cranial sacral therapy & chiropractice. A Naturopathic doctor can also look at her whole system & "prescribe" herbs, homeopathics & other natural remedies. You might want to check out a website called www.notmilk.com. Your daughter may have an allergy to milk/dairy & by eliminating it, she may have a reduction in her allergies. You can find a lot of referrals for the above noted holistic practitioners on my website at www.AWellLivedLife.Net & go to the resources page. Hope that helps...it's so hard when someone you love is suffering. It's good that you're looking into alternative methods of treating her symptoms. Medications & mainstream medicine really just treat the symptoms while alternative/holistic treatments find the true source & deal with that.

Take care---C.

Hi S.,

I was in your spot until last June,07. After monthly antibiotics, allergy panel tests we finally had tubes placed in his ears and adenoids removed. I was very hesitant as every thing else we tried did not take care of his problem. Dr's wanted to put him on Singular as well, but he did not react well to meds. It has been almost a year and he has not had one ear infection or sinus infection! These were chronic. I do give him a homeopathic drop, ""Children's Allergy Relief" by NatraBio. I found this at our health food store. I administer this to him when the wind kicks up and I see his little nose start to drip. (He is now 3 and a half) He also takes a chewable vitamin C daily along with his multivitamin. This has really helped! No more problems and no more drugs! Best wishes to you as you find what works for your daughter.

Hi S.,

I was in the same boat as you are with my nephew and with me. Antibiotics are not good for a long period of time. You need to clean her system out and get her on a good multi vitamin. The two things I used for my nephew was Aloe juice and an herb called Schizandra. The aloe cleans the system gently and the Schizandra will help with breathing. I use to get sinus infection at least four times a year. I have not had one in 7 years. This would also be good for your husband’s asthma.

You can get both from me. Email me and I can tell you how to get them.

All the best.

I used to work in a health food store and learned some interesting stuff. I learned that you can control pollen allergies with raw LOCAL honey. It is made from the pollens that cause allergies and just a teaspoon a day will desensitize you to the pollen. DO NOT put it in hot drinks or heat it in any way. Just give her a teaspoon of honey. You probably won't hear any complaints from her. Also, if she has been on anitbiotics for so long, has anyone told you to give her a probiotic after she finishes taking the antibiotics? The antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria, but the good bacteria as well. She needs to have that good bacteria replaced to help fight off more illness. Just go to a health food store and ask for a probiotic. It's all natural and necessary for health. Hope this helps.

Elderberry is phenomenal for viral infections. My daughter (soon to be 15) was chronically ill from birth to 6 yrs. of age when a friend gave me a bottle of Elderberry. Six years of specialists, pnuemonias, asthma, allergies, a multitude of doctors, tests, medications, etc. and one bottle of Elderberry took my child from "failure to thrive" and near death to a thriving, healthy young girl. They never did find out what "IT" was that caused her to be so severly sick, but she hasn't had one single case of phuemonia or colds since. She is asthmatic but not severe like when she was young. She has only been sick one time in almost 9 years now with a bacterial infection.
Elderberry is 100% safe, it is a natural berry grown in the northeast which has properties that help our bodies immune system to fight off VIRAL infections (colds, certain types of flus, etc.) At first sign of a cold (scratchy throat, sneezing, or runny nose) take Elderberry three times that day. You may need to continue for a few days if your little ones system is compromised (as my daughters was). If she/you have a viral infection Elderberry should knock it out by the second day....if symptoms are not alleviated, then chance are you are dealing with a bacterial infection.
I use Natural Sources liquid Elderberry concentrate which comes in a 16 oz. brown glass bottle and you can get at your local health food stores. We've tried other types and brands which did not work as well. If you can't get it locally, try on line at Herbspro.com. (Once open, you must refrigerate the bottle, it lasts quite awhile in the fridge. You don't have to mix the whole bottle as directed. You can mix it 8:1 with water for a single glass, or if you/your child don't like the taste mix it in white grape, apple, or other similar juice. You'll never know it's there but you still get the benefit!)
As for the sinus infections, for years my daughters & I were prescribed anit-biotics for chronic sinus infections. What that got me was (due to the anti-biotics) a massive fungal infection which was cracking my skull and I had to have sinus surgery to remove all the fungus caused by the anti-biotics. (it also caused my girls adult teeth to come in really yellow, but no pediatrician ever warned us about that.) Had I known then what I know now I woud have NEVER taken the anti-biotics. You can ask your local health food store to recommend what would work best for a little one. Hylands has a bunch of really good homeopathic medications. My daughters & I now use grapefruit seed oil for sinus infections (it's very strong & taste nasty so we mix it in pink grapefruit juice to mask it). Also, you may have heard of the netti pot (on Oprah and other shows) that also really helps. Your little one may be too young for that now, but keep it in mind. You can get netti pot at any health food store, Wal-mart, or other drug stores. (also, if you/your children need an antibiotic for things like Strep, be sure to take an acidophilus to replace the "good bacteria" that our bodies need. Again, noone ever told us that but I've since learned that it's needed.)
There is a homeopathic ear drop which I believe also has grapefruit seed oil in it and helps with the pain from ear infections.
Although Singulair works well (especially for athmatics) there was a recent article linking suicides to Singulair and they warned that if you must take it to work closely with your doctors to monitor that. The nasal sprays you need to be careful with because if not used correctly can damage your nasal passages. I have lost all sense of smell & taste after using a really strong nasal spray which was prescribed to me. I have since learned, after talking with and meeting many people, there are a bunch of people who, like me, used these sprays and have also lost their sense of smell & taste. None of us were warned of the possible side effects.
Though Western medicines are good and are needed, you are right to be concerned with their "over use" and doctors who over prescribe. Just do your research and choose wisely. There are some things, like Strep throat, that definitely need to have an anti-biotic, but some doctors give them out to appease parents of children with colds and infections that don't need an anti-biotic.
I would recommend you find a really good health food store in your area and ask lots of questions. (Also, if you find a pediatrician who is a D.O., they tend to know a lot about homeopathic remedies.) Wild Oats is one we have used, along with Better Nutrition. Their staff are generally pretty knowledgeable and very helpful!
Good luck to you!
P.S. I read the next response about the homeopathic Chiro and wanted to add that it also helped my daughter to alleviate her asthma. She/We rarely have to use any of the typical asthma meds anymore...only when allergy season (pollen counts being in the dangerous zone) is at its worst. But, we no longer use the Singulair and don't use the inhaler or nebullizer on a daily basis any more (we've only had to use them a couple of days out of the year). Our homeopathic chiro really believes in Elderberry and other homeopathic remedies.

Hi S.,

My son (3 yrs old) suffered with CHRONIC Eczyma where he scabbed & bled continuously for the last 6 months. His pediatrician did a blood test when he was a year old & determined he was allergic to soy, egg whites & 5 other things. I completely cut out all those items from his diet, but it didn't seem to help. He prescribed steroid creams which I only used on him twice (only to determine they never helped). I prayed for wisdom after seeing my little one suffer so much. Then a friend of mine mentioned this chiropractor she has been going to (I notice a few other people have recommended chiro's too)
He determined (through muscle reflex testing) that he had a sensitivity (not allergic) to wheat & oats. After cutting that out of his diet (everything he ate), the back of his legs cleared up. Then the next week I had him checked for corn. Sure enough he had an actual allergy to corn (yes, that means corn starch, corn syrup, anything with corn in it). Within 2 days, his body COMPLETELY cleared up & has not had a reaction since. We now only buy organic & whole foods...never anything processed). It has been extremely difficult, but well worth it!! I am sooo thankful for this chiropractor! If interested he is Dr Robert Hughes in La Habra ###-###-####. He has done wonders for many friends skin conditions, kids who have been on antibiotics for coughs & so on. He does everything through natural food supplements & dietary elimination. Great job seeking Homeopathic remedies!

The Neti pot is a great way to flush out allergens in the sinus passage. cheap and safe. This was featured on Oprah by Dr. Ray a while back. Although she is only 4years old I don't know how willing she will be to use this "flushing" system. Making your house allergen free is also helpful. Get rid of your carpet, use natural cleaning products. Have you heard of the Rainbow vaccuum? It uses water and a hurracine type system that when you place it in a room it will suck all allergens, oils, dust from the air into the water base. Thus avoiding those pesky vaccuum bags or bagless containers. It comes with a vaccuum attachment also all dirt goes into water...no more dust! I recently saw the Neti pot at Whole foods market. If there is not one near your home try local
organic markets.

My son’s godmother is a homeopath in the UK. She has advised several things:

1.Go to the website www.abchomeopathy.com, put in all the symptoms of the allergies etc. and it will give you a grid of which remedies you need. SULPHA is a big remed. You can I believe buy homeopathy over the counter so go for 6c potency 3 times a day or 30c once a day.

2.By all means try to keep your child off antibiotics because in the end they will make her worse.

3.Give the child a good quality children’s vitamin. Recommended brand : Colodial Silver, though might only be able to get in the UK.

4.Aloe Vera to take internally is also good for allergies. The whole system gets screwed up with antibiotics, further aggravating allergies so the balance needs restoring.

5.Specific homeopathic remedies for sinuses (KALI BAC). SILICA is also good for discharges in general (but child could get worse before getting better after taking SILICA)

Hope this is helpful.

Aloha S.,

There are 2 things that come to mind right away. First is to make sure that all dairy is removed from the diet. It promotes the "breeding ground" for the infections. Second, give her a quality probiotic. What that does is restores the body's own good flora to fight infections. The best one if from Shaklee because it is proven for proper absorbtion and it comes it is easy to mix in juice. You can read all the details by clicking on the Children's Health link at http://www.healthyohana.net . Citriboost is what you want to look at. These products have made a great difference for our family, especially our son's immune system when he had to go in for heart surgery. I hope this helps.

Dear S.,

My daughter had a number of ear infections when she was 2-3 years old. She had antibiotics each time (I gave her probiotics too knowing I'm prone to candida/yeast overgrowth) as antibiotics take away all the good as well as the bad bacteria (sorry if you already know all this). The infections did not stop until I saw a homeopath. She has not had one since. While your child's infections/allergies are far worse, it's worth a try. We go to a homeopath named Juliette Hoffman at Healing Arts Center in Altadena. She is so lovely and great with children. It's a hard course to follow, taking them off certain foods for a month, etc, but sounds like you're ready. I hope your husband is ready to try alternatives too. You'll be surprised after a few months how her body responds to natural medicine. I know I was. I'm a true believer now. All my best.

After all of those anti-biotics, there is a likelihood that she has a systemic candida. I recommend that you visit the book section of your local health food store and read up on the problem... it's the underlying cause of much of what your daughter is undergoing, and I will tell you that most allopathic physicians will pooh-pooh that possibility. Changing her diet and eliminating dairy products, foods containing yeast (bread, etc.) and pastas, ice cream, etc. are the start. Anti-biotics are designed to wipe out bacteria - all bacteria - so it kills the good and the bad bacteria in the digestive system leaving in its place a type of fungus or yeast which then evolves into other problems. Whenever you have an override like this, it can manifest in allergies, digestive problems, etc. I would start her on acidophilis to re-populate the flora in her digestive system for starters and to change her diet - and read up on this problem - it's more prevalent than most of us imagine.

Hi S.! Well, I have a 14 month old son, who was diagnosed with asthma last Nov. I am very much against Western medicine and hate that I have to give him all these drugs to reduce inflamation in his lungs, etc. At the same time, I'm greatful that there is something to relieve him of his distress when he is having trouble breathing. So, in trying to figure out what to do, I decided to take my boy to a chiropractor. Some people have their reserves about chiropractic care, but I believe that it is a smart thing if you have the right doctor. I wait tables and have had lots of back issues in the last 7 years or so. In the past, I've had a couple of doctors who definitely did not know what they were doing. For the last 2 years though, I have been seeing Dr. Jeffrey Trigo, who is definitely an angel. He is very gentle and safe and I trust him completely with my neck (which is a very difficult thing for me). Anyway, I have debated on taking my son to see him, but decided that it was a necessity after my last visit to his office (in Huntington Beach). I spoke with another mom of 2 boys, one of which has asthma. She takes both her boys to see Dr. Trigo and she couldn't say enough about how much healthier her son (with asthma) has been since he started chiropractic care. Well, that was enough for me. I am going to start taking my son to see him too. If your husband is big on western medicine, I have a feeling he might be against this type of care, but it is worth a shot. It amazes that people will fill their bodies with all these chemicals that have so many damaging side effects on the body, yet they wont let a skilled professional relieve them of the pressure of pinched nerves and spinal subluxation, etc. If you are near the Huntington Beach, Ca area, I recommend giving him a call ###-###-####. He knows a lot and is a father himself. He's a good man with a passion for helping others stay well without all the drugs. Good luck! Please let me know how it goes. I have yet to find a homeopathic remedy, but my son had surgery in december and it has helped. We still get sinus infections, but they are easier to control...He had his adenoid removed (the adenoid harbors bacteria and viruses and just waits for a dip in your immune system and they take over) turbinates reduced (made it easier to breath and to clear out the junk in his nose. They also "shaved" (different than removed) his tonsils because they were to swollen to get to the adenoid. He does feel better and we don't use antibiotics anymore. We had the same problem with antibiotics, his little body doesn't like them. My chiro recommended NutriBiotic Nasal spray that has grapefruit seed extract in for the sinus infections and it does work for my son but only to a degree. It makes the infection more managable. I hope that helps. Good Luck! by the way, the surgery and consult was done with and ent and that has made the biggest difference.

I really feel for you. There are several homepathic treatments available. Go to your local heath food store and see if you can get what they call Las Vegas mix for alerergies. One drop under the tounge. This will hel build antibodies. In the mean time you have a larger problem... the air you breathe. Las Vegas has one of the highest fine particulats of dust in the air in the country! I have lived here for 17 years. My next door neighbor for several years was Dr. Cohen (an alergist). In his studies the average child bborn or brought here will take 7 years to develop some type of breathing problem or alergy (scary _ and adults aren't much better. One thing you can do to help is get a clean air machine (not cheap, about $4,000) installed as a piece of your heating and air conditioning system. There are some additional air purifiers, but do your research as many don't do what they claim. You see your amune system is like a cup. You may be a little alergic to dogs, but it only fills up the cup 1/4 of the way, but then the spring comes and the pollen count goes up... add another 1/3 cup, then your very allergic to olve trees and you fadd anothe 1/2 cup, at this time your cup runith over and your going to react. If it is just the dogs, your ok. Now at night time, we get a chance to reduce those reactions, partly because we are indoors, and the way we breath at night. This lowers the levels of allergens in our cup, until we are up and exposed to them once again. The idea of the clean air machine is to help illiminate the dust allergens, and virtually make you home a clean home like a hospital. You can check out Extreem Make over show on TV, I think they installed one hee in Las Vegas, Air Serv also has one called ASTATS, this is the one I have.
Now for the personal story. My son was 6 and constanttly in the doctors office for allergies and occassionaly we would need an antibiotic. I went to the doctors office and thr Dr. gave me 7 different medications totallying over 150.00. I bought them, brought them home, put them on the table, looked at my son and thought this is rediculous. This boy is 6yrs old, and I have a drug factory here. I could not imagine contiuning to feed him all these medicines, it was too much and I needed to find a solution. My solution was in cleaning the air, We installed the ASTAT system 5 years ago. Since that time, he has only had to take a singular pill maybe 4 days a year. I have also had seasonal alergies and no longer have reactions. It may be my imagination, but I think we sleep better and wake up more refreashed. On thing that I did not think of that has also been a big plus is that I do not have to dust as often as others do... which is way cool. Good luck

i started taking my children to my chiropractor who also practices chinese medicine and homeopathic care after i was fed up with doctors treating the symptoms of their ear infections and allergies but not targeting the cause. i learned so much from my chiroprator how nutrition affects the body - that dairy increases mucus and makes them more suseptible to sinus and ear problems and how breads and sugars increase inflammation. so i would recommend taking your daughter to someone like that. increased use of antibiotics will only cause her body to build up an immunity to them which can be dangerous when we really need them. it also destroys the body's beneficial bacteria such as acidopholus which lead to lower immune system function and yeast infections. as wonderful as western medicine is they are trained only to battle the symptoms so that we no longer suffer with them, however it does not take care of the problem =( i understand your struggle. we never want to see our children suffer and we are always wanting to do the right thing. it is also difficult to trust in something new as well, if you have been raised to trust only MDs like i was, but i am seeing tremendous results with a cleaner "diet" and the use of supplements. i hope you are able to find a wonderful practitioner in your area - good luck

S.,
I get sinus infections all the time due to my allergies and saline nasal spray 5 times a day seems to help a bit. The only thing that really helped me though, was chiropractic adjustments 3 times a week. I was not a believer in this kind of treatment, but my sister got into it and so I tried it out. Both my children suffer from allergies as well. The chiropractic adjustments never made me feel very good afterward, but it is the ONLY thing that has ever helped me enough with my allergies and helped my kids with theirs as well. My warning is - I now have numbing on my left side from an adjustment that my old chiropractor did. I would suggest making sure you go to a chiropractor with many references and only let them adjust your daughter with an activator at the neck. Chiro also helped me with clenching that I tend to do when my allergies get bad. The year I took my son to the chiropractor was the first year we didn't have to put him on steroids, inhailers and antibiotics for his allergies. Good luck.

I feel your pain. I have a ten year old in a similar situation. He takes Allegra every day, as well as Nasacort and Astelin sprays twice a day, and sometimes decongestant - this does seem to have helped somewhat! I just wanted to warn you about Singulair, though. We had a terrible experience with it, as did two of his friends. It made them wired, anxious and literally unable to sleep. I went online and found that this is very common, so I would avoid it if at all possible. If you're looking for a good allergist, Dr. Eitches (sp?)is supposed to be terrific. Good luck, B.

Hi S. i would avoid medications whenever possible esp for these little bodies. i've used this amazing homeopathic doctor in lA that has helped my kids tremendously! She's a medical doctor who treats with homeopathic medicine. There is also a pediatric nurse in her office that works in conjunction with her. Her web site is DrFeder.com. If it's not close to you, you can order her book possibly. Acupuncture works well with allergies but it can be hard to get your child up for that! Hope this helps.
I must say that even my conservative pediatrician doesn't use antibiotics for ear infections any more. They have found that it doesn't work. I recomend garlic mullen drops. Reieves pain and helps heal.

Hi. As an infant, my son was diagnosed as an asthmatic. His father and step sister are an asthmatics. His pediatrician recommended the nebulizer with albuterol and steroid. Like you, I did not like all of the drugs and did not want him to become dependent on them, like his father and sister. The homeopathic dr I met with suggested taking him off "dairy" - milk, cheese, ice cream, eggs. The Dr told me that historically, our nationalities, did not eat dairy. So we tend to be allergic to all dairy. My son is Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican & American Indian - pretty big mix. At any rate, I did try it. We were off dairy for a few months, maybe a year. My son, now 7, can have dairy. It worked for me and others I've recommended it to. Good luck!

Dear S.,

I practice both Chinese medicine and homeopathy in San Diego county (San Marcos). Both of these methods work well for reversing chronic sinus infections in children. As some of the other moms have already mentioned, the acupuncture route may involve not only acupuncture and herbs, but also dietary modifications. Dairy in any form really is a big aggravating factor for many children.

In my opinion, homeopathy is an even deeper-working natural medicine. It has the capacity to not only stop the current cycle of sinus infections but also to keep them from ever making an appearance again. The key is finding the remedy that is most resonant with your child's whole being (mental, emotional, physical), not just the category "sinus infections." And drugs, unfortunately, merely suppress the symptoms, eventually driving illness even deeper into the child's being until it manifests on some even more serious level. So whatever method you finally choose, getting your daughter off the drugs ASAP should be a high priority.

Best of luck to you in your quest!
Warmly,

Once I found out about wheat (gluten) allergy I gave up wheat for a month and everything went away. I tried eating it again and it came back. I also had to give up dairy...as I read often if allergic to wheat...the person is also allergic to dairy. You must read every label as wheat is in many products and has different names...(oats and barley included). There is a gluten free bakery in culver city. Hope this helps.

Hi S.,

I would recommend seeing a pediatric acupuncturist. For 4 year olds we usually use a machine, rather than needles, that gently "tickles" acupuncture points. Your practitioner would recommend a Chinese herbal formulas to help strengthen your child's immune systetm, improve digestion, and also to work with acute attacks. In addition, more detailed nutritional advice would be given.

As a start, dairy products and sugar are the worst thing for allergies, as when the body ingests them they cause the body to create more phlegm. Try switching to almond milk or rice milk, avoiding dairy and sugar as much as possible. We always say in Chinese medicine that moderation is best, to limit things that are not good for you to l-2X/week.

In addition, sleep is incredibly important; a child this age needs 11-12 hours of sleep per night (I'm sure he is already getting this much but I thought I'd mention it because sometimes children don't get as much sleep as they need). Lastly, avoid over-stimulation, such as lots of t.v., computers, videos, etc.

Am not sure where you live, but I could possibly recommend someone to you that's in your area. I'm in San Diego County, in San Marcos, and I know other acupuncturists in many other places.

Hope this helps.

HI S.,

I agree with you about medicines. Often they treat the symptoms and not the cause, making things worse. My first response is to "find out" the source of the allergy. In many cases it can be found in the foods we eat. Some of the high allergen foods may include: wheat, dairy, soy, corn, sugar, etc. Begin by eliminating these foods from her diet. Many foods also contain pesticides, preservatives...so going for organic may be a better choice. You might also find some good remedies at www.mercola.com. I subscribe to Dr. Mercola's newsletter and find a lot of helpful information on natural health there. You just may find the answers you are looking for.

My son was diagnosed with asthma a few yrs back and also had chronic sinus infections since about birth. Antibiotics never once worked for him AND I believe hindered his healing process. As soon as I started taking him to a homeopathic chiropractor he is a whoooole new kid. His asthma attacks are soo mild now it's hard to tell that it's really asthma. When he has these mild attacks I get him in to the chiro for an adjustment and miracles happen. My sisters son was diagnosed with asthma just a few months sooner than my son and she went with the western medicine option as she does not believe in natural docs. Her son has had so much asthma medicine that his body requires his inhaler every single morning no matter if he's asthmatic or not. Same with ear infections...I'll give the most extreme example of any of my kids so far..just a few months ago my 5 yr old son was up screaming in the night that his ear was hurting so bad. Like..screaming. For close to two hours waking the other kids up. I tried ibuprofin and the natural garlic ear drops and neither one seemed to do any good right away for him. I got him right in to the chiro the next morning, the chiro did his lymph drainage technique and a small adjustment and my son was perfectly fine after that. A homeopathic chiro is the way to go in my opinion..regular back cracking chiro's never did a thing for my kids' ear infections. The homeopathic medicine is designed specific to your own child's personal needs so just going to the health food store to find something natural may not work as well. This fabulous homeopathic chiropractor that our family sees just recently cured my daughters "incurable" celiac disease that she was diagnosed with over 3 yrs ago after a biopsy. No lie.

I'm sure that there are many options out there. The easiest one to add to your daily routine TODAY is a neti pot. It is a little tea pot looking thing that you use to give yourself a saline flush. You put warm saline solution in it then pour the saline in one nostril. It comes out the other side (assuming the path has been cleared of mucus). It is a little odd at first. You may need to stock up on tissues for the adjustment period. (Lots of mucus to flush in a system not used it.) What makes this so great as a treatment for airborne allergens is that all of the sinus passages get washed out. I got my neti pot for about $20 so it is a cheap solution. You just put a little salt (iodide free) in warm water.

I'd ask for consultation from Flavia at Santa Monica Pharmacy in Santa Monica (around 7th and Broadway?). I have a 3 year old with the same allergies as her dad, and got some consultation from there. The problem with giving her all the hard core medication is that her body doesn't have a chance to build its own defense to the allergy. It's a personal choice, for sure, and I think the natural remedies can have a more subtle effect, but that's the route we're taking right now. I know it's been a tough allergy season already, and I wish you lots of luck.

Hi S. - I'm in total agreement that for her long term health you should try more natural remedies. As a mother and father you you want to do whatever you can to help ease the suffering, but I do worry about the long term side -effects of too many medications, so I applaud you for trying to find alternative solutions. As with practically every ailment, excellent nutrition (consumption of whole food fruits, vegetables, grains) is going to help tremendously. It takes time, and unfortunately in America people want immediate results, but if you work on getting your daughter to eat a lot of fresh raw fruits and vegetables every day, you will most likely notice positive differences over time. At 4 years old it's extremely difficult for most to get them to eat enough, and although some people try to "hide" it in cooked recipes, the produce loses a significant amount of it's disease fighting power when cooked (much better than nothing though). To make sure everyone in my family gets their daily quotient, we all eat Juice Plus capsules/chewables. It's not a vitamin, but the real 17 fruits, vegetables and grains without the sugar, salt and liquid and put in capsule/chewable form. It's a nutritional seatbelt that works on the inside to fight whatever's going in in your little one's body creating her symptoms. You can see the research on this product at http://www.juiceplus.com/+cc42230 and/or call 800-942-1260 to listen to information on Juice Plus. I wish you all the best in getting her to a healthier place.

I decided to try taking him off of dairy products and it was a miracle. He stopped drinking milk and has eggs and cheese on rare occasions and his ear infections stopped. His asthma is almost completly gone. He is 6 now. It has been a couple of years now and we have had very few problems. It takes a little getting use to. We use soy yogurt and cheese instead of the other but it has been well worth it. My husband has had severe asthma his whole life, he cut these things from his diet, lost 20 lbs and his asthma is gone. His Mom was in shock. He takes no daily medicine now. His doctor told me that it did not surprise her. Hope this helps and good luck.

Your instincts are right. Please, find an alternative doctor for your child. I don't have experience with your specific problem, but have had much success healing our daughter of severe acid reflux with natural herbs & diet (instead of surgery). Since doing this, we've heard countless cases of people turning to alternative practices for a variety of serious medical reasons and finding much success. Prescription drugs are not always the answer! Western medicine doesn't take into consideration the body has the ability to heal itself on the inside, just like the outside. With the proper guidance, it can. I've seen it happen and have now switched our whole family over to this philosophy. We are all so much healthier for it. Good luck!

Ok, so MANY sinus (especially chronic) infections and allergies are misdiagnosed. I have found that they are frequently candida overgrowth (aka yeast infection). Most women get symptoms vaginally, but men and some women (like me) get symptoms in their sinuses.

Especially, if your daughter has taken that many antibiotics, it's very likely that her main problem is candida....which will cause the intestinal flora to be so screwed up that her body reacts with a histamine reaction to everything. Also, many people don't know that the intestines are actually a main portion of the immune system.

I would go get PB8 found online www.nutritionow.com or in a local healthfood store. We give our son 1 every other night so that he doesn't get sick from the other kids at school or have alelrgy issues and it works great. He's 5.5 years old and has never had an antibiotic...or anything else....even for ear infections, which the PB8 generally clears up within a few hours.

I have other nutritional ideas as well, if you want to contact me off list.

Oh, no dairy and no sugar for a few weeks, as yeast grows REALLY well in a base of these 2 things. Also, the white film on grapes and raisins are a fungus, so keep that away from her until her symptoms are gone. yeast in bread can set it off as well. It's just for a little while until you can get her body healthy.

We do not have a Singulair or Biaxin deficiencies in our bodies, so it's really important that you figure out why it's happening, rather than covering up the sympotkms with drugs....which you are trying to do.

Have you tried saline drops or a neti pot? Our husbands sound quite similar in their medicalized approach to colds, allergies and the like. I started giving my 3 1/2 yo daughter squirts of saline solution at bath time and her incidence of colds and allergies are greatly reduced. It took a while for her to get used to it-it can be a little unpleasant at first. But I much prefer saline solution to antibiotics and cold medicines. I have a 7 week old also who currently is struggling w/a stuffed nose. I put a drop of saline in each nostril and use the bulb syringe.

One of my grandson's, 4 years old, has some of the same problems as your daughter. My daughter gives him singular, every night, and uses an inhaler when necessary, once or twice a day.(Not always) Her doctor does not like to give antibiotics. The doctor would prefer him fight some of them on his own. My daughter had allergies, and I gave her benadryl if she got too bad. Mostly, we used a wet cloth on her eyes after being in the grass, mustard plants, etc. Often times, just laying her down on the couch and putting the wet cloth on her eyes, settled her down. She ultimately had so many earaches that they gave her a tonsillectomy, tubes in her ears, and took out her adenoids. That solved the earaches and severe colds. Her hearing was being affected prior to the surgery. Now she is fine in that area, but does take Claritin as an adult when her allergies flare up. Also, do you have any animals? That can cause some serious reactions. If you do, keep the hair vacuumed up, and the animals out of her bedroom.

I hope this helped a bit.

I, too, have kids with allergies. I've been doing some reading and have discovered one remedy in particular. Try buying some local honey and giving her 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per night, every night. Honey contains trace amounts of all the allergens in the local area, which can help her body build immunity. It's like a natural vaccination. Make sure it's local. You can usually purchase local at the farmer's market. Also, you may want to check out the website for the Dr. Sears peditric practice. They have great suggestions for how you can make your home as allergy free/kid friendly as possible. It's askdrsears.com
In addition, I have switched from traditional cleaners and detergents in my house to all natural/non toxic ones. The fog-off from conventional cleaners can also exacerbate allergies. Trader Joe's has a great laundry detergent, bleach, dish soap and dish washer soap. I haven't tried their household cleaners, but know many people that really like them. Mrs. Meyers is also a good natural cleaning solution. You can also make your own. Check out hints from heloise for tips on that.
You are right to be concerned about her constant exposure to antibiotics. They REALLY should only be used when absolutely necessary. If you are giving her antibiotics, make sure you are supplementing her diet with probiotics (found in yogurt, preferably Yo Baby or any other organic yogurt.) I don't know where you live, but if you live anywhere near Capo Beach, you should check out the Dr. Sears practice. My girls see Dr. Bob and he is GREAT!!
Good luck,
T.

Taking antibiotics for a long period of time is not good for any of us, yes they will kill the bad bacteria but they also kill good bacteria. I would suggest eliminating as many allergens as possible and building up her immune system. There are so many toxins in our homes cleaners, carpet, paint, dust that are all factors. I had suffered from allergies for about 10 year and I was tired of having a headache everyday and taking medicine so I worked to remove toxins from my body and my environment and I have been free of prescription drugs for over a year. I would start with your cleaning products, and getting an air purifier. Then I would have her taking vitamins daily and find a probiotic drink like yakult.

I don't know about Veramist, but Singulair is not an antibiotic. It is a steroid. Look it up on Web MD as it has recently hit the news with a possible connection to childhood suicide. Research the medications your allergist is recommending and ask him/her as well as your pharmacist any questions you may have. USually drugs like Veramist, Nasonex, Flonase, etc are used to treat nasal allergy symptoms and are not antibiotics. Actually some of them can cause sinus infections. Singulair and Advair and drugs like them treat the respiratory symptoms caused by allergies, like asthma.

I am NOT A DOCTOR, I suffer from allergies and allergy induced asthma. I use Advair, Nasonex and Zyrtec to treat my allergies as recommended by my allergist. I would do research on any medication being suggested to treat your daughters symptoms. It's dangerous not to do that, espcially since she is a child.

Good luck!

My advice wouldn’t really be homeopathic, but more proactive. If your daughter still has ear infections, please consider having tubes put in her ears. Also, hasn’t her doctor suggested she should have her adenoids removed? That can be very helpful in preventing infections for kids that have them chronically. Don’t worry about using the nasal sprays; they reduce inflammation topically in the sinuses rather than being taking into the child's blood steam by taking them orally and have much milder side effects. An air purifier can really help agaist pollen/dust allergies
Find an excellent pediatric allergist, have your child tested for allergies, and eliminate as many allergens from her diet/environment as you can. You won't eliminate her problems altogether, but you can lesson them a great deal.

But when she has an infection, you can't avoid antibiotics or she can develop very serious problems from long term infections.

Hope this helps

Hi S.,
I'm sorry to hear about the allergy troubles you are having. You can try an air purifier in the house and use saline nasal spray to help your daughter. Also, I have used acupuncture for my allergies and asthma. It saved me! However, you just have to do some research for an acupuncturist who will work on children.

Good luck!

Hi S.,

I am a mother of a 5 yr old boy who has had asthma and infections of some sort pretty much since born preemie at 7 months. Because of this, Life has always been alittle medically challenging with him.

Then 7 months ago when a dear family friend told us about MONA-VIE and how it has helped him, his wife, and their 4 children (ages 5 to 15) with a mired of different ailments.

MONA-VIE is 100% ORGANIC and it's main ingredient is the ACAI Berry. Who doesn't want Organic for their family?! And How else can I get my son to have the phytonutrients and antioxidants of 19 fruits in his day without all of the sugar?

My husband ventured into it first and soon after, said he was amazed how good he felt. Needless to say, HE spent $39 bucks and signed us on to be Independent Distributors so we could began getting our own monthly shipments.

I have a very hectic life, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to be committed to have to remember to drink 2oz of this drink twice a day - I am a mom, a step-mom, a wife, and a full time worker - how would I do this too?

Altho, with that being said, I am also hugely committed to my sons health. He has about 5-7 Doctor visits a year for asthma or an ear infection, respiratory infection, or something. We have tried everything. He was even allergic to alot of the Medicines (Penicillin's) they gave him. I do think "local honey" helped - but nothing came close to what we decided to try him on next!

I still had some concerns about my baby on MONA-VIE, so I searched the internet for anything I could find. It was ALL GOOD... When my husband said he wanted our son to start drinking MONA-VIE ~ I agreed.

I have to say, "This is the best Health thing We have EVER done for our family." WE HAVE NOT BEEN SICK SINCE OCTOBER OF LAST YEAR!"

PRIOR TO MONA-VIE, Our son needed approx 2 Albuterol (steroid) breathing treatments a day.. On and off certain weeks, depending on the air, weeds, dust, chemicals, and his own activities. Whatever triggers it?

At the recommendation of our DR, he had Benadril everyday to help with his congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, and eczema. I now believe Benadril was beginning to effect his Kidneys as he rarely used the restroom.

SINCE MONA-VIE, He has had only about 15 breathing treatments! Oh my gosh, This was a GOD SENT! And he's not on any form of Benadril and he uses the restroom often! He hasn't had an ear infection, sinus infection, sore throat, or any infection since MONA-VIE! He still has alittle bit of eczema - but NOT like before. We believe this is from his food intake, and we're still working on that with good results! Recently, I took him to the DR for his Kindergarten shots, ect. and his Doctor asked me what we have been doing differently as he looked so healthy; along with the fact he hasn't seen him in over 6 months!! I told him about MONA-VIE and he said he has heard alot of good things about it!

So... "WHAT'S YOUR HEALTH WORTH? YOUR CHILDS?" I believe 100% in MONA-VIE and S., I believe it would be worth trying for you and your family. You have nothing to loose, except the $39 sign up and maybe the cost of your 1st shipment! There are hundreds and hundreds of testimonials on MONA-VIE websites to help you decide your course for your baby girl and your family!

There is Testimonial upon Testimonial from people who have come off of Pain pills, sleeping pills, IBS problems, joint pains, ect... This drink is amazing... And You DESERVE to be healthy! You may still get a Cold or the flu; but I promise MONA-VIE shortens the stay!

MONA-VIE WILL HELP your beautiful Daughter. We noticed a change in our sons health in about 3 days! Get your Daughter off of all those mean medications. Get her back to health!!

Call so I can get you a bottle - altho, you may want several bottles for your family to get started as it sounds like it could help you and your husband as well! If you get a case (4 bottles), we'll will give you a bottle free; as a gift (a $33 dollar value!!)

My daughter also has some tremendous allergies. I use different herbal remedies. The two websites I pull from the most are : bulkherbstore.com and their sister site, welltellme.com. The bulk herb store is a place where you can purchase herbs and learn more about them. The welltellme site is a forum that has parents from all over who use both homeopathic and herbal remedies for a ton of different ailments and is so helpful to me. I have used both sites to help my daughter with colds, throat infections, ear infections and the flu. She has healed from them all in remarkable timing and faster than her cousins who used traditional western medicines and she had a ton more energy than they did. I have actually removed her from all allergy meds and I have not put her on antibiotics in over a year. I hope this helps a bit.

Hi S.,
Your daughter sounds just like me as a kid. After a lifetime of dealing with it, THE best remedy I've found is nasal lavage. Diminished my respiratory reactions dramatically. My asthma has settled down, as well. Two ENT doctors had told me nasal lavage would help my asthma, but it took a couple of years for me to try it. I finally tried it just for allergies, never believing it would touch my asthma. I was wrong. They were right.

Nasal lavage is just washing tepid saline through the nose-- mine has a handy Water-Pic attachment. My insurance covered it, so it was practically free. It sounds gross, but it works. Every day, put the nozzle in one nostril, tilt the head over the sink and let the saline wash out the opposite nostril. Reduces the number of colds and infections and sore throats, as well. Ask your doctor -- s/he'll get you sorted out with the right method for your little one. Very helpful, very easy, chemical free.

Most pharmacies sell kits for doing it and you can easily make your own sterile saline at home. Your doctor can give you advice on that, as well.

There are a LOT of homeopathic remedies out there, and some of them may well work for your daughter. But truthfully, none of them have worked for me.

Hope this helps...?

If she is drinking regular cows milk, you might want to put her on soy. I am an adult but I used to get sinus infections all the time. My mom did some research on food allergies and effects of different hormones etc in dairy because my 8 year old nephew has severe food allergies and autism - and she found several articles and research showing a link for some children (and adults) of dairy and ear and sinus infections. I have been drinking soy milk for the past 8 years and have not had 1 single sinus infection - though I do get colds. Make sure you get an organic soy milk - or at least try organic cows milk, to get away from all the drugs and growth hormones they pump into those poor cows. If you think I am nuts, do some research online.

My other recommendation is to get a saline nasal spray (Little Noses makes one and there is one called Ocean Spray). Teach her to wash out her sinus 2x/day (morning and nights) - this too will at least help the sinus infections - and there are no drugs involved.

Good luck to you and your little girl - I can only imagine how horrible she must feel with all those infections.

Hi,
On Oprah she once featured a sinus wash, this isn't a problem for me, so I don't remember it perfectly - but there's a little teapot looking thing and they had an audience member try it. The water goes up into your sinus and out the other nostril. The woman said it was easy and later on in a follow up show, several people said it made a huge difference with their sinus problems & was so easy & simple. The brand they had on the show may have been medipot. I'm not sure.
Also, I've heard that eating local honey also can help with allergies, it helps people to get use to the natural pollens in the area.
Good luck!

I have been to a homeopathic doctor in the past and know many people who have and swear by it. I definitely believe in homeopathy. It can be expense to go to a homeopathic doctor but worth it. You can also go to Henry's and look at the homeopathic medicine; each one tells you what it is mostly used for. Also, I wanted to mention accupuncture; it may not be something you do right now because your daughter is so young but I believe that it could be a cure for her in the future. I hope this helps and good luck. I would also be weary of giving so many antibiotics and for such a prolonged time.

Another method you might want to try along with anything else is to buy HEPA air purifiers for your home. Make sure it's a true HEPA air filter that's used (i.e. you have to buy replacement filters, don't get the kind that you vacuum off, and avoid ionic purifiers that emit ozone). I bought one for my son and it's worked great! Of course, it's not something you can use to protect her while she's outside, but at least it's one way to relieve the symptoms while home. I've also been able to stop my allergy medication since I bought it (my allergies sound more mild than your daughter's though). If you can afford it, buy one for each room of the house that your daughter spends the most time in. The one I bought was about $89 at Walmart. I end up moving it from room to room to clean the air, but it'd be much nicer if I had one for each room.

You might try a gluten/dairy free diet. When my daughter was 18 months old she began having bronchitis chronically. It was determined she had an allergy to milk. Now many years later, through a homeopathic practitioner, she was confirmed to be sensitive to both dairy and gluten.
It is much better than taking all the prescriptions and, after you get used to the substitutions, you can have a very healthy, happy life style. It's just a little work in the beginning - reading all the labels.

I'm afraid I don't have any quick fix, but you mentioned environmental allergens. My eldest daughter has allergies to dust, dust mites and some pollens. The thing that made the biggest difference for us was taking up the carpeting in her bedroom and the playroom. We moved bookcases out and the accumulation of stuffed animals. Her cycle of nasal congestion and sinus infections was DRASTICALLY reduced. I also put "allergy bedding" on her bed. That helped too. Between Singulair and her inhalers (just as needed) we are able to keep everything under control and keep her off antibiotics. Good luck!

HI S.,
I know all about allergies/asthma as i have dealt with them my adult life....

as for pediatrics, I have a friend with 2 daughters ages 4 and 5 and they were BOTH on allergy prescriptions. About 2 months ago, she started to give them a piece of our healthy chocolate - loaded with anti-oxidants and other nutritionals, they have both STOPPED taking the allergy medicine within 1 week their eyes and noses cleared up and they are no longer spending the money on prescriptions and they are happy!

I USED to be a huge allergy sufferer and have been taking the chocolate as well and doing the nettie pot for nasal irrigation adn so far, so good. i have NOT had to take Rx in over 2 years! The side effects of taking prescriptions are too many.

If you would like to try the chocolate (no refined sugars, etc.) all natural - but tastes good, then please let me know and i can send you some samples. And...depending on where you're located, perhaps we can meet.

I'm a stay at home mom to a girl and boy - ages 4 and 3.

Please call me or email me at ____@____.com if you're interested in doing some research on this amazing products.

What really works for me is Arsenicum Album 30c, almost right away. But homeopathy is about treating the individual based upon the various symptoms presented, along with other unique characterics about your child. Hi S.,

You can easily pick out the right homeopathic by going to your local health food store and asking someone in the health section to help you out. They may have books on homeopathic solutions or you could always go to the bookstore, look up the remedy, and then go somewhere that sells homeopathics. There are even pretty decent online "materia medica's" and other references. Or you could go to a homeopathic doctor and get a "constitutional rememdy" which is the specific remedy that is perfect for your daughter, her symptoms, and her temperment. I take homeopathics every time a health issue arises. They truly work.

Your daughter is probably so sick because of the overuse of antibiotics. Make sure she gets probiotics like acidophilus to encourage the regrowth of her intentinal flora, otherwise she may have immune, digestive and eliminative issues. 80% of the immune system is located in the digestive sysytem!

There is a flower essence called yarrow that is great for allergies. Yarrow Environmental Solution by FES (Flower Essence Society) is wonderful and inexpensive.

Also, what is your diet like? If there is a lot of white sugar (immune depressant) white flour and "NaCl" table salt (use sea salt instead.) as well as processed foods, red meats, fish, chemical additives, pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, and preservatives in what you eat, your daughter could be suffering due to this as well.

If you don't already, please buy fresh, organic fruits and vegetables at your health food store or from a local farmer's market. Eat whole grains and whole foods that retain their life force. If you want specific suggestions you can email me.

Don't give her the meds! You can heal it naturally.

Good Luck,
R.

A really great book about allergies and remedies is "Is this your child" by Doris Rapp you can find it on amazon. Also, try to find a pediatric osteopath, they are doctors with the title DO after their name instead of MD and they can write prescriptions when needed but they tend to first try the natural remedies, some HMO's even have DO's that you can choose to be your provider.

He was treated and the lump (that the Dr. said would not go away on its own) went away within two months. I know that NAET has gotten several children off of medication with allergies and asthma. my daughter had ear infections everymonth from birth until 3,had ear tubes at 10months, became highly allergic to all supha antibiotics, was told she had several food allergies and we had to stop western medicines because they were making her even more sick. We kept her off wheat, dairey and sugar most of her life until at the age of 13 I felt she would develop an eating disorder. By giving her her power back to make choices for herself, she ate pretty much what she wanted, She had cronic sinus infections, got sick a lot, couldn't focus in school the list was endless. The year beofre she was to go to college, she became so very ill with 105 for 6 days, got a staph infection and hepres in in mounth. I had been consulting with many Celiac and gluten free families, and felt we needed to get her tested, but not from blood! She finally agreed, and I told her that I would get tested too. We both were tested and sure enough, we both were glutin and casin/dairy intolerant. After that we tested the rest of the family and all of us, my 4 daughters, my husband and I all have the Gluten intolerance. It was an answer to our much unanswered medical problems for all our children! Today, after 1 1/2 years gluten and dairy free, Our daughter is symptom free! She is almost completed her first year of college out of state and gluten free successfully, feeling great! I only wish that all Western Doctors would test all children and parents, it is hereditary, for this! the best site to go for testing is www.entrolab,com. read the testimonial and read up on the Disorder, not allergin, by Danna Korn's books. Its so worthwhile and informative. Good Luck! Listen to your intuition!!!!! P. C

Hi S.,

Have you tried getting her natural bacteria count up after antibiotics? Find a probiotic with HSO's or organic soil organisms...Sometimes if you can get her to take kifer that will help a little..Rememer, she needs to stay clear and breathing well for her tissues to heal naturally. I would use the meds prescribed by the DR as prescribed until her body begins to heal and you can get her natural bacteria levels up to a normal level. Allergy meds are not antibiotics...they don't kill the natural bacteria.
For allergies, remove all sugar from her diet. That includes wheats and glutens...This will give her body a chance to catch up and get to a normal level.
You can seek a natural nutritionist too...

Good luck,

Yikes, S.. You could go the yarrow root, raw honey, eye of newt way... or you could listen to your husband and your health professionals.

In the years since penicillin was first used and modern medicine was becoming available (the 1920s/30s), infant mortality went from 100 per 1000 to 6.4 per 1000, and life expectancy went from 54 years to 78 years.

On the other hand, wives' tales of natural remedies have been a constant for thousands of years. And the reason that they ring so true is because most of them DO help to a certain extent, and always have.

The only reason that I am writing is that this is not YOU we are talking about. This is about your daughter. You want to herbalize yourself, then I say "more power to you." But as an obvioulsy thoughtful and caring mother, I don't expect that you'd choose to treat your child's real pain and risk of injury based on the advice you get from Mamasource or some self-proclaimed herbalist in a back room or strip mall.

Like the others here giving you advice, I am not a doctor either. Perhaps a second opinion by a real doctor could be useful to you in making your decision.

Best wishes to you and your daughter.

Have you thought of chiropractic? When my son was 2 years old, he was constantly getting ear infections. As soon as he was off antibiotics, he would get another one. They were talking tubes when we started going to a chiropractor. We were skeptical of it until he stopped having ear infections and they said he wouldn't need tubes now! It's worth a shot anyway, especially since this has been going on since birth.

One thing is helpful for pollen related allergies such as hayfever is to have 1 tsp-tbsp of LOCALLY GROWN honey. The basis for this is that the honey contains small amounts of pollen from plants and flowers that are local to our environment. This allows your body to build an immunity to local allergen factors.

I've also seen Dr. Oz speak on Oprah about how the daily use of a Neti Pot http://www.oprah.com/health/oz/oz_20070426_350_106.jhtml helps with allergies and sinusitis.

Good Luck to you!

Hi, I have similar problems. I take a homeopathic remedy called HEEL for allergies and it works for me. I have also stopped eating cow's milk, wheat and sugar. She might have a food allergy which is causing this. You could start her with a rice and chicken diet and gradually add other foods and see if things are better and find the one that bothers her.

There are other products but you rreally need to go to a naturopathy specialist. If you have an osteopath doctor in the area you could go to them for a physical workup first, blood, hair, etc... analysis and then he/she could suggest other ways.

I feel you are correct in finding the cause of the problem, since traditional medicine seems to have made things worse. good luck!

Antibiotics can do a number on anyone! My aunt had to have quite a few sinus surgeries and has finally found relief using a nasal rinse. Her doctor also recommended probiotics (acidolpholus (spell?), PB8, to name a few)to add back the beneficial bacteria that the antibiotics destroy (maybe ask your pediatrician. This good bacteria would help digest her food better and help her absorb needed nutrients through the intestine to help keep her immune system strong and eliminate mucous buildup from toxins that can build up when food is not properly digested. There are several forms of probiotics out there like yogurt and other types that will work for kids. I know the nasal rinse may be hard to do with a little one, but I have heard wonderful things about it. I believe it is a saline and water solution, you lean your head forward over a sink and tilt the head sideways pouring the solution through one nostril and it flows out the other (as for a child I would definitely check with a pediatrician before doing this though). My daughter's doctor said this keeps the sinus cleaned out so the mucous does not sit in there and become infected. When my oldest daugher was a baby she had constant ear infections and sinus issues. We too had her on antibiotics (didn't know about probiotics back then). Eventually I eliminated dairy, chocolate and things with lots of colorants (froot loops for one) and this helped lots. We also had her tonsils and adnoids removed (doctor recommended). She finally slept through the night and was a different kid. I am not sure what doctors say about tonsils these days though. Well those are just of few of the things we have had good luck with.

You are right to be concerned about medicines that are casually prescribed to children. I would suggest taking your daughter to a Naturalpath Dr. to see what can be given to your daughter to help with her allergies. There are many alternatives to Western Medicine that work better and that our bodies don't build up a tolerance to because they are natural. Check out this website http://nccam.nih.gov/ they might be able to help you find a Dr. in your area. And oh, to ease your husbands mind many of these Dr.'s were trained in Western Medicine but decided to switch over to the practice of Eastern or a more natural way to treat ailments. Also, buy only foods where possible but especially dairy, fruits/veggies. The hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides that are used on these products could be having a negative affect. And not to mention are very unhealthy for our bodies. Hope this info helps you (and others out there).

Hi S.,
I am not sure where you live but i would highly recommend that you seek the guidance of a good Naturopath or Homeopathic MD to help you with the allergy remedies. Unfortunatley due to all of the repeat use of antibiotics and resistance that she has developed; her immune system has been deminished and will expose her to all types of environmental sensitivities. Just to help her begin to build back up her digestion and nutrient absorption abilities i would recommend that you get her started on a good probiotic daily. NOt just yogurt but a good (powdered) probiotic from the health food store that you mix into milk or juice or whatever you can to get her to take it daily, this will really make a big difference for bodies ability to fight illness and subsequently for the allergies. Good luck...

Hi S.,
I am so sorry for your daughter and all the troubles she is having. It must be so scary for you to give her all these medications. When my oldest son was young he had big trouble with his asthma and allergies. All the medications we gave him had side effects. It was a hard time for him and me, but we got through it. I know you will too. As for natural remedy advice, I will share a few tips. Since your daughter has been on antibiotic you need to make sure the intestinal flora is replenished or else yeast will be more dominate. Making sure that your daughter eats yogurt or gets some kind of probiotics daily is important. This will help to build her immune system so she will not need the antibiotics. Also, cutting way back on the sugar. Processed foods that we can buy for our kids are laced with sugar. Before we know it we are giving them more sugar than we are aware of. Sugar plays into the yeast thing, sugar feeds the yeast. A good way to get kids to take yogurt is to make smoothies. You could also add some whey powder to make sure important amino acids are there to build the immune system. The other item that I suggest is vitamin C with Quercetin. This is something I take and have used with my son and it seems to help. As for natural antibiotic I like to use Sovereign Silver. Go to: http://www.natural-immunogenics.com and read about it. I have used this product for years and have had excellent results.

I hope this helps.
God bless,
B.

S.,
I has a similar problem with my daughter who is now 15 yrs. old.
When she was younger she would always be sick with ear infections. I would give her the antibiotics, it would go away for a short time then return. I stopped giving her the medication and started putting onion juice and peroxide in her ears three times a day. I did this for about a month. In this time her ear drained thick green mucus. I know gross. I can say she never had an ear infection again, literally. See the antibiotics just dry up all that mucus and it sits in your body. The onion juice and peroxide brings it all out. You can boil an onion and use that juice. Let it sit in the ear about 5 to 10 minutes drain it the do the peroxide the same. Good luck. This should also help with the alergies.

Dr. Oz (the doc always on Oprah) had highly recommends a neti(sp?) Pot if you have chronic sinus infections/allergies. It's like a little tea pot that you put warm saline solution in and rinse out you nose and sinus cavaties with daily. Also, I would give your daughter probiotics since she has taken so many antibiotics in her life. This will put the good bacteria that the antibiotics have killed back in her system. You could take her to a homeopath or an integrative pediatrician for a more natural approach

S. ~ The product we use for our family is called Isamune from Isagenix. It is Bovine Colostrum which helps strengthen immune response and ease allergic symptoms. Isamune contains the finest source of colostrum, along with citric acid to offer the greatest benefit.

We have greatly reduced our allergy symptoms, cold and flu symptoms, etc. using this very simple spray. You simply spray it into your mouth and swallow. It's safe enough for an infant.

If you would like to send me an e-mail, I will help you test this out at my cost. We always go natural when we can.

I think it is great that you are looking for an alternative solution to drugs. They are important but many times over prescribed. If you are looking for an alternative route I would find a naturepathic doctor in your area. Not sure where you are located, but we use Dr. Thomas Faye in Encintas at Choosing Nature. He has been a great resource for us. I have two small children and he has kept my daughter completely off the antibiotics when she has had pneumonia. His phone number is ###-###-####. He is great with kids, and is wonderful about answering all of my questions. Good luck!

Hi S.,

I've heard from a few different people that local honey can help allergies. The idea is that the bees make the honey from pollen in your area and eating the honey can help diminish allergic reactions to the pollen. I think you'd give a teaspoon a day or something like that. It's something I'm planning to try (I just moved so am still getting my bearings). You can probably find more information about it on the internet.

Good luck!

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it is investigating a possible link between Merck’s best-selling asthma drug, Singulair, and suicide.

FDA said it is reviewing reports of mood changes, suicidal behavior and suicide in patients who have taken the popular drug also used for allergies.

Merck has updated the drug’s labeling four times in the past year to include information on a range of side effects: tremors, anxiousness, depression and suicidal behavior.

FDA said it asked the Whitehouse, N.J.-based company to dig deeper into its data on Singulair for more evidence of possible links to suicide. It could take up to nine months before agency scientists can draw any conclusions, FDA said in a posting to its Web site.

Merck officials stressed that FDA’s inquiry is based on a small number of suicide reports and not clinical studies, which are used to evaluate drug safety. The company said none of the 11,000 patients enrolled in 40 Singulair trials has committed suicide.

“We have no indication that anything about the mechanism of Singulair is consistent with these events,” said George Philip, director of research and product development. “But because suicide is a life-threatening event we thought it was important to provide this information in the product label.”

Merck said it recently added reports of suicide to Singulair’s label, which already listed suicidal thinking and behavior as possible side effects.

With sales of $4.3 billion last year, Singulair is used by millions of patients in the U.S, according to Merck. First approved in 1998, it’s part of a class of asthma and allergy drugs that includes AstraZeneca’s Accolate and Critical Therapeutics’s Zyflo.

FDA said it is also reviewing reports of side effects with those drugs. Their labeling does not contain reports of suicide.

Shares of Merck & Co. Inc. fell 16 cents to $44.54 in afternoon trading.
