Hormones? and Meditation Instead of Meds

this is two-fold. I seem to cry for no reason here lately, does that mean my hormones are out of whack? Well, really, the crying is usually activated by a sad commericial on tv or something similar, I don't just burst out while at the grocery store. Have I lost my mind? Second, is anyone familar with meditation? I have a hard time sleeping sometimes and would rather not take meds and was looking for an alternative.

What can I do next?

It happened to me too after children-- I cry at commercials, country songs (LOL), Disney movies, etc... I always seem to tear up so easily whereas before kids, I was not that sensitive. I think it's a normal hormonal changed.

I have used meditation for sleeping in the past and it works well IF you can keep you mind on it and not all of the things you need to do the next day (my issue)! Good luck!

I was going through this exact thing at the begining of last year. I went to see my OB doctor because I had gotten to where I could not handle the burst of depression/crying for no reason whatsoever. When I could not pin point a reason that only made it worse because I thought that I was going crazy. I am not a normal medicine taker matter of fact I have a hard time taking anything vitamins or whatever everyday. My doctor put me on a trial 3 month test to see if a new PMS med would work for me. I only take 1 to 3 a month. I usually get the depression feeling about 2 weeks before I start my cycle and I only take the med for the days that I feel that feeling. I have went up to 3 months in a roll without having to take anything. I feel like my normal self. It works for me because I only take it when I need it and not an everydayt thing. I am a person that thinks that you should experiance differant emotions but I guess I had come to my limit because of there not being a reason for me feeling like this. I know that you were asking about meditation instead of meds .... I couldn't do it doesnt mean that you cannot. I just wanted you to know about this med because it is something that is actually working for me. There are options that are not everyday kind of thing and what you are going through is normal even though it doesnt feel normal.

The only time I cried like that was when I was pregnant! Is that possible? You can always go to your OB/GYN and have your hormones checked, they could be out of whack. I don't know your age, but if you're having other symptoms such as irregular periods, you may be going into perimenopause. Don't be alarmed, it's just a thought.

My menopause hit hard & fast at the beginning of this year. I was going along just fine with periods right on time, then BOOM no periods all year. So get it checked out so you know what's going on. I find I'm more irritable, emotional and my sleep was awful.

Melatonin is a natural pill you can take that promotes sleeping. You shouldn't take more than 3mg per day (which most pills are just that 3mg). It really helps me to sleep, most of the time. No caffeine REALLY helps.

Good luck.

I have used something called Gro-bust. I was made by a lady that had 8 children and she wanted to make something that would help balance a woman's hormones. It ended up being called Gro-bust because one of the side effect,(which is a good side effect!) is that your breast could firm up. I am a 40C and I personally have not had mine grow bigger. But I have been told that if you are smaller chested that could be different.

BUT!!! I took it after my miscarriage with my baby blues and in a week I was feeling SO MUCH BETTER and HAPPIER! It is herbal. I am very sensitive in my stomach and this did not hurt my tummy at all!

(it is cheaper on the internet than in the health food stores)

Crying at sappy commercials, in the absence of depression-like symptoms, probably is hormones. But I have no advice there.

Insomnia can, however, be an early sign on depression. You might consider if the two problems (crying and insomnia) are related.

Either way, Coree's suggestion about following your breath is a good one. Repeating a prayer or mantra is also an easy way to meditate. I find that listening to instrumental music on my iPod is a good way to fall asleep, too.

Could be hormones - I don't know much about that except that hormones are powerful substances. I do know that meditation is wonderful - great way to avoid meds. I don't know where you are to give you advice on how to find a group to suit you, but starting by making long even breaths and counting them, keeping your attention focused on the sensations of breathing, to ten, if you can, is a great start. Thich Naht Hahn has written alot of great and simple books about meditation, for starters. good luck.

Dear L.,
You don't need to rely on meds for your blues. There are a lot of treatments that you can do that don't alter your chemistry. It sounds like you are experiencing changes or have recently gone through changes of some kind that haven't yet been dealt with. Sometimes the changes are too subtle to really recognize as life altering, so the effects get missed and the blues set in.
There are vitamins that help with mood swings and they are great helps. Try Vitamin B complex, take them daily. Twice a day at the start, then only in the mornings. St.John's Wort is also a big help, but I wouldn't stay on that one long term. After extensive use it tends to lower your iron and that causes drowsiness at the least. This takes care of the physical effects of the blues. Because You are a spiritual being you need to take care of that part just as much as the physical. Get into a good Christian church, one that ministers to you and your whole family. Most importantly You need a personal relationship with Christ, not just a religion. You can take all your cares to Him in prayer, and the Holy Spirit will give you strength, comfort and guidance through His word, the Bible. It sounds very simple, and it is! You can "cast your cares on Him for He careth for you".
I am a happily married (for 21yrs) working mother of 4. I have put this all to a test and the vitamins help with the mood swings while the Lord gives strength from within.
Best wishes,
L. C

It definately can be hormones. I try to stay away from the pharmaceuticals as much as possible and lean toward a natural solution. I found a wonderful nurse practioner who is willing to work with compounding and more natural ways of dealing with these issues. Although I am in my early 50's, she has tested me for the same issue. I would recommend you have your doctor do a blood test to check for Estradiol, prgesterone, testosterone, DHEA Sulfate, homosysteine and T3-Free levels. This will show where all these fall into the range and you can determine if you are in need of additional meds. I have been taking a DHEA subligual along with progesterone (compounded) capsules and an estriadol cream/Byest compound. She is constantly monitoring me. I feel comfortable with this. You can also do a saliva or blood spot test for checking hormone levels. I have learned all this as I have been seeing her. Suzanne Somers wrote a good book about natural hormones and there are many others out there. If you are on BCP's that might be an issue as well as they regulate your hormone levels.
Do be careful of the over diagnosed "depression" and try to find a root cause before you start taking something.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hi! I wanted to say I think its normal after having kids to be extra emotional, I know I am :)

I did however recently discover a hormonal problem I am having called Poly cystic ovarian syndrom (PCOS) it has many other side effects though, severe mood swings being one, weight gain, acne, abnormal hair growth, irregular or painful periods, hard time getting pregnant, insomnia, head aches or migrains ect ect...

If you think you might have an issue go see your doc and ask about it, however if there's no other symptoms I wouldn't worry too much.
A good dose of meditation is great for the soul, you may need some time to yourself, I don't know how well it would help a hormonal problem but you never know. There are also natural alternatives for hormone problems too, so if that does turn out to be the problem I can help you in that area!

I wish you luck and pray that you're just a little more emotional than usual and don't have any health issue attached to it.

Keep us posted!

It could be your hormones, but they only way you will know for sure is to talk to your doctor and get some blood work done. But if thats your only symptom, I wouldnt be overly concerned.

You might want to find a yoga class in your area, local community centers often have them for a low fee, and that can help you with learning to meditate as well as providing many other benifits.

Hi L.,
I felt like this when my baby was around 9 months old and went to see my gyno. She thought that it was prob. baby blues and put me on antidepresents. Come to find out, months after the symptoms continued, my thyroid was really messed up. I have hypothyroidism and what you are describing sounds like the beginning of my symptoms. I urge you to get blood work done before doing anything else. The antidepresents were not needed in my case. It took a couple months to get my hormones regulated and now I feel great. Good luck!
Sincerely,
A.

L., I agree with you about the meds. When that ball gets rolling, it can get out of control. I have an alternative suggestion I would love to tell you about. Educate only ... you decide if it is for you. It is an all natural product.
