How Do I Go About Getting My 2-Year-old Tested for Food Allergies?

Our son is having difficulties with speech and is about to receive services to help him. I have heard that sometimes food allergies can interfere with speech development and would like to have him tested. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is food allergy testing the same as other allergy tests that require a great number of arm pokes?

I know that some chiropractors and nutritionist do food testing. Do you know if it could be something else? I have seen lots of kids return to health after going to a chiropractor. Check out www.icpa4kids.org. Also www.mercola.com has a lot of natural references. Good Luck.

My son has excema and the dematologist suggested that we get him tested for allergies. It was a blood test and he did very well for a 10 month old. Anyways he is allergic to quite a few things but I have never heard of allergies interfering with their speach development.Good luck!

Yes, all allergy testing is done the same, with a little device that pokes a bit of the allergen under the skin. You would need to take him to an allergist to do the testing.

D.,
Not all allergies are created equally. Food allergies can be tricky and have several degrees of intolerance. I have a friend who took her daughter in to be tested for allegies because she broke out in hives every time she drank milk. The blood test showed no allergy. It didn't make sense.

I would recommend a food elimination diet. There is a great book called "Is this your child?" by Dr. Doris Rapp and it explains exactly how to do it, step by step. It is not invasive at all - which is NOT what I can say for a blood test or scratch test that aren't always accurate.

Basically, you take out possible allergens in your son's diet and then slowly one by one add things and see what the reaction is, if any.

Please let me know if you have any questions, I have been there done that with allergies and feel like we've got a pretty good handle on the situation in our house.
Best of Luck,
B.

My 3 children had eczema and the doctor tested all of them them for food allergies at the age of 2. It was one blood test done at the office. Good luck

They do testing first by skin scratch testing.... but sometimes it doesn't show up. We had to bring in actual milk and soy for them to use because it didn't show up in the first test... i knew he was allergic from his reactions to eating it. When they used what i brought it, it finally showed up on the test. We also did blood testing which showed more allergies that the skin test didn't show. However, i also hear that blood test can be over positive results. Though, they test differently as you ca have an allergy that doesn't show up directly in your skin... and therefore wouldn't show up in a skin test. We had our son tested at 6 mo and he's allergic to dairy, egg white, egg yoke, soy and peanuts. good luck! You can also consult and wholistic dietician (so?), thanks
