How Do You Clean a Waffle Iron?

I got a waffle iron for Christmas but it cannot be submerged to clean it. I spray it with oil prior to baking the waffles, and then have to "wipe with a damp cloth" to clean it, according to the instructions. Getting in between all those little squares is driving me crazy and making me not want to make waffles any more! Help!

What can I do next?

Usually you don't have to oil the iron after its first use. I also got one for Christmas and that's what the manual said. As for getting in between, I just use a soapy cloth to get out the bits...as long as the plug-in part stays dry you can drip water on everything else. Without using oil each time they still brown but you don't have a bigger mess to deal with. They're still yummy too!

Well I use a toothbrush. It's soft enough to not scrub away the teflon coating and small enough to fit in th9e nooks and crannies. The only problem I find is that it takes a little time by having to clean the toothbrush often. You can even squirt detergent on it to soap it up.. Good luck

Try a toothbrush. Obviously not one you are using, and the bigger and tougher the better. Just get it wet and scrub. No need for soap really, you just cook the same thing in it all the time and soap would soak into the teflon coating anyway and you don't want to eat that!

Warm water and a toothbrush!

designate a washcloth just for it and put it the iron damp while it is still slightly hot (but off). The steam helps get everything off and on to the rag. Leave it there for a few mintues then wipe it with that cloth. This works good on a George Forman also.

I set mine on the sinks edge and use a dripping washrag on it. Then I rinse it with running water. To dry I make sure that it's sitting so any water that got into the case can drip out. That's worked for me for 4+years. and our family loves waffles!

I like Ego waffles (lol)
But I've never cleaned in between each square unless I had a waffle stick, then I scrape it out, I just give it a good wipe and let the heat of the iron cook of any old oils, or run the iron part under water and just be sure not to let the outside get to wet. You could use a scrubber (like a bottle or veggie scrubber), give it a scrub and rinse.
I believe you just dont want to stick it in a sink of water but to my understanding, its ok to spray water on the plate. (I could be wrong but I've never had any problems doing it that way).

You can use a srub brush on the squares with alittle of dish soap. But make sure that you don't scrub too hard of you'll sratch the non stick surface.

After it cools down, I often close a wet paper towel (lay it across flat, not balled up) inside it, let it rest like that for...until I remember I did it... then pull the paper towel out. Whatever is left is soggy enough to wipe right off.

I also wipe my waffle iron down when it is hot. Or let the heat burn everything off. One other thing I do is use a pastry brush to get in the grooves. But, don't use it when it is hot, cause it will melt the bristles of the pastry brush. Just dampen and then use the brush if need be.

If you want a great waffle recipe that you won't have to spray for, contact me and I will send it to you. It has oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon egg and butter in it. It does not taste like oatmeal at all.

Don't give up on making waffles. They are wonderful for the kids and very nutritious. Serve with strawberries and whip cream (low fat if you like).

Hi I got a message from I. asking me to share my Oatmeal Waffle Recipe. Didn't know where else to put it.

Oatmeal Waffles

3 cups flour, 2 cups. quick cooking oatmeal
1/4 tsp. salt (optional), 4 eggs slightly beaten
3 cups milk, 12 TBSP. butter melted
4Tbsp. brown sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon (I use about 2 tablespoons, we like the flavor of cinnamon)
In Large bowl stir flour, oats, baking powder, cinnamon and salt set aside. In small mixing bowl stir together eggs, milk, butter + brown sugar. Add to flour mixture, stir until blended. Spray waffle iron with butter flavored Pam, or use butter on a pastry brush. Pour batter on, and cook.

Top with syrup or fresh fruit.

We serve ours with fresh strawberries, or ones that we froze, along with whip cream.

(I mix the whole recipe together adding the butter last).

Diabetic exchange: 1 bread, 2 fats, 176 calories per one waffle.

Hugs Mary
Enjoy

I would use a brush of some sort- like a bottle brush for baby bottles. That would get in between the squares with less work than a cloth.

On the really tough spots, I will set a hot soapy rag on there and just let it soak for an hour or so in each place. Works great for mine, even back by the hinge.

See if the waffle plates pop out. Mine do and then they can be washed in the sink separetly from the electric part.

I use my pastry brush to brush the crumbs out, then follow it by wiping with a damp cloth. I have a Belgian Waffle maker, though, so the squares are much larger and I think easier to keep clean. It's "industrial size" - got it at Costco for a reasonable price.

Our waffle iron belongs to my husband as he is best preparing them. When it comes time to clean it I have one of those brush plate scrubbers that hold dish soap. I just wet the brush and scrape the grooves. Works great. No soap or water needed. Just wipe up the the counter where the pieces have fallen. No need to give up the waffles. Hope this helps.

I don't clean my waffle iron anymore than what you already do. I don't worry about all the "in-between" spots. My grandma never does, and my mom never does either and we're all still healthy :). Adds a little extra flavor as I say!

What i do for mine is while it is still hot and plugged in, i spray with water really well and then close the lid. I let the water steam everything off.
