I live at a very small base called RAF Croughton in the UK. I was just wondering how long it took others to get their newborns their passports and social security number? My daughter was born in the UK 5 months ago and we are having a difficult time getting her passport and social security number. If I would have known it was going to take this long to get this stuff I would have gone back to the states to have her. Advice for anyone going to have a baby overseas, look deeply into going back to the states to have your child. It will make life so much easier than fighting to get a passport and social security number for your child. 5 months is ridiculas. I am so glad that nothing happened back home because I would not be able to go if it did. They have my passport with visa in it so I am stuck where I am at and my husband is leaving next week too.

What can I do next?

Hi there,

I had my baby in Landstuhl, Germany, and it took a while to get her passport also. I'd say a good 4-5 months to get both the passport and social security card. The social security card definitely took longer though. If you really needed to get back to the States, there would still be a way, so don't stress too much about it. :) Maybe your base passport office can help you figure out what is taking so long. I agree, that it's a good idea to also have a tourist passport on hand. It never hurts! Good luck with everything, and hopefully your baby's things show up very soon!!

We live in Germany and it took us three and a half months for the passport and another 2 weeks after that for the SSN. Five months is a bit long and I'd start making phone calls if you haven't already. I had to call our passport office twice before they were able to straighten things out at the embassy and get my daughter's passport done.

I have a 6 month old daughter and we are still waiting for her social security number. It's horrible because we would like to file taxes but can't till that comes in, and they don't know how much long it will be! As for the passport it took 3 months to get her passport. You can ask to get the passport expedited, It costs money but I heard that it can shorten time by a month or so.

When my daughter was born near RAF Alconbury in 2004, it only took us less than 2 months to get her passport and social. You should follow up to find out where the paperwork is. Also, you should always have a 2nd passport (your official one plus your tourist one) so that you are never "stuck". If it was a true emergency, the embassy would be able to issue you documents to travel within 24 hrs.
I loved the experience of having my daughter in England at a local hospital. I also went off base and found a group of "Mums and Tots" - all British, that were my best friends while stationed there. Enjoy the UK while you can - it is beautiful, clean and peaceful. You are very lucky to be there.
