How Long Do Strawberries Remain Good for You?

I buy boxes of straberries and blueberries from aisles on grocery store. I even bought a huge box of strawberries from Costco. They are NOT in the refrigertaor section in the store. So I assume it should be fine to keep them out at room temp even at home. The strawberries get spoit even if I keep in the refrigerator in a couple days.
My son loves them , so I thought I will ask here if I can keep the berries fresh and good for atleast a week? My son doesn't like to eat it very cold, so that's why I leave it outside.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

1 week max in the fridge. Trick is to only wash berries right before you use them so they stay longer. Otherwise we freeze half.

The trick is to manage moisture on them. Definitely keep them in the fridge, and do not wash them until right before you use them. Additionally, I always open the package and slip a small (dry) washcloth or folded-over paper towel in the top of the box, and then flip the box upside down. This allows for more air space, and the towel/cloth absorbs extra humidity. Also helps if you keep them in the crisper in your fridge, rather than just on a shelf. If they get too humid, they will mold. But even then, they will really only last for 5-7 days, better to use them up quickly, or freeze them. Now that berries are out of season, they're expensive, and shipped from far away, and not as tasty. Try buying frozen - you can thaw them in the micro, peaches especially maintain their texture even when thawed. My boys have loved frozen berries and peaches all winter long.

Berries are VERY sensitive, and spoil quickly. One thing you can do, is give them a vinegar wash. (As soon as you bring them home!!) This stops the molding process and keeps them a while longer. Do 1 part vinegar, to 10 parts water. I generally do 1/2 cup of vinegar and 5 cups of water in a big pot.
In addition, they do NEED to be refrigerated. Could you keep them in there, and take them out a bit before your son eats them, to bring them temp down? I suggest getting a produce bowl, that is designed to keep fruit fresh longer. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-LKS-08-Be...
They are small, but really do work. I keep several around here, for various produce.

When I buy a large quantity of them I end up freezing them. Sometimes they last about 5 days other times I'm lucky if they last 24 hrs.

I depends on how I pick them out. I turn the box upside down, sideways, etc...and make sure there are no fuzzy or mushy ones in the box.

Refrigerate the container then take out what he would eat as a portion to get room temperature a while before his snack/meal.

argh...love berries but hate their shelf life. we gotta eat ours up in 2-3 days or i end up chunking at least some on the bottom. i can only buy a small container at a time or it's a waste. i have the same probs w/bananas, guess i just don't eat fast enough!

about 4 days in the fridge and 2 outside the fridge. I did buy some lettuce savers from bed bath and beyond that is supposed to keep produce fresh longer. So far, it has worked.

If I don't wash and cut them up the day I buy them, they're fuzzy within a day or two (even refrigerated).

I don't think I've ever had any kind of berries last for a week. I buy them with the intention of eating them in the next day or two. I have found that it helps to wash and cut the strawberries and stick them in the fridge..but it only helps them stay fresh for an extra day at the most.

They should be fine to eat unless they get moldy.
You might want to try your hand at making home made fruit leather - it can last four weeks.

It varies. I try to choose them carefully and then store in the refrigerator. If I find one that is too soft, I toss it immediately because one bad one seems to turn them all bad quickly. But if they don't last at least 4 days, I bring the receipt back to my store the next week and get a refund or another carton.

I haven't had much luck with strawberries, they spoil within a day or two in the fridge for M. so we usually consume them as soon as I buy them (and I buy small packages).

Blueberries I can usually keep fresh in the crisper drawer for about a week. You have to make sure to wash them and pick out any that are mushy or moldy, so that they don't spoil the others. I put a damp paper towel back in the container with them as well.

They're fine unless they're mushy/wet and/or have white fuzz. They really should be kept in the fridge to keep them longer.

I miss strawberries and blueberries. I can't eat them any more due to diverticulitis. ::sigh::
