How Much Do You Drink Wine/alcohol?

I was reading my monthly magazine last night. Normally I just flip through the magazine because honestly it was an Xmas gift from my boss and I dont like the magazine (Working Mother)..seems to be more WORK driven than family/child driven..ok back to the question.
One of the pages said that if you have trouble sleeping 52% of working mothers will have a glass of wine before bed. That seemed really high to me. Although I do dabble on Friday and saturday (sometime sunday) with a few cocktails, I never drink during the week....I wouldnt be able to get out of bed...Im just 'dumb' the next day. so How much do YOU drink during the week (Mon-Friday)? I just feel like this magazine is wrong...52% seems too high.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW...great responses. I will keep doing tallies on this question. I would check the average about every 7 or 10 mins.....With myself included after averaging the yes's and the no's I CONSTISTANTLY has anywhere from a 42-48% average of people that dabble in the alcolhol gods during the week....guess the magazine wasnt TOO far off...but my average NEVER went over 48% and never under 40%. :)
Gosh all this work..I think I need a drink :):) LOL Thanks ladies!! :)

Didn't drink at all when my kids were young. Now I'm down to two teenagers in the house I actually have a couple beers nearly every night while cooking dinner. Frequently go out to lunch with my guy or a sister and have some then too.

(So next time you hear me complaining about the weight not coming off as fast as I'd like, y'all can say, well DUH!)

I love a nice glass of wine every now and then. If it has been a rough day then I will have a glass of wine or a beer, but ONLY after all the kids are in bed. My fav. thing is to sit in the bathtub and have my wine while hubby sits on the floor and we talk. It seems we get a ton accomplished this way for some reason.

Seriously tho I have found that I am in love with LLANO Sweet Red wine. Yum yum yum

Our daughter is now in college. When she was home we really did not drink very much. I remember we had a 6 pack in the fridge for a year one time..

I guess I felt like I needed to be able to handle anything that came up. It was just not something that was important or needed.

But once she was up at college!!! We have a drink a few times a week. We stop for a drink just for fun! We go to a movie theater that serves drinks and dinner.. Going tonight as a matter of fact. to a free movie! Wed night date! Woo Hoo!

We post on FB we are having a Cubra Libra, White Russian, wine, sangria.. and she comments we have turned into "drunkards".. She is such a grandma.. She turns 21 this summer and has been researching cocktails so she is not disappointed with her first alcoholic beverage..

So maybe she will join us at some point.. That will be completely different!

I agree - 52% does seem high. I'm in the same boat with you in that I don't drink during the week and even on most weekends. I have my son during the week and every other weekend so if I do drink at all it's saved for the weekends I don't have him. I also don't keep any type of alcohol in my house. I also know most of my other working mother friends don't drink during the week and like me don't have trouble sleeping because between working and the family we're all exhausted by days end. :-)

I'm actually the opposite of you... when I drink I wake up early and want to go work out/ get my house clean/ am just generally FAR more on the ball.

That said, I rarely drink these days. Um... Um... Split a bottle with my brother in early March I think?

Now... I do drink more AND less given the situation. I've gone years without drinking, and I've had wine with lunch and dinner every day for months (Italy, I'm also walking everywhere... it's burned off in no time flat). When I have houseguests I drink more often, when I have my military friends round and about on leave I drink more often.

I have a crazy high tolerance for alcohol (blame the scots). During my heavy drinking years before kids I could drop a grand in the french quarter on alcohol alone, for myself, in a weekend. I'd split a bottle of, not wine, but hard alcohol. 15-20 shots (about 5-6 shots an hour) and only a mild buzz. THESE days, I like keeping my tolerance low. I like feeling warm after just 1 or 2 glasses of wine.

I should probably drink more often, because my days after are so much more productive (I've only been hungover 3 times in my life) but I don't.

But I am a weekend warrior... I usually have several social events on the weekends... dinner at a friends, poker nights, picnics, etc... and all of my friends are drinkers...So I guess I make up for over the weekend! :-)

Both Hubby and I have either one glass of wine OR one beer every night. Usually it is with dinner, sometimes it is after we put our daughter to bed and we have "us" time sitting infront of the TV, talk and having a glass of something. On Mondays I am in a Kickball league and a bar sponsers us so those nights I have 2-3 beers when we hang at the bar afterwards.

Im one of the few it seems on this post that will have a drink a night sometimes 2. I really like to have a beer while cooking. And whats after all this after the kids go to bed. Maybe if you planned on indulging after the kids go to bed and end up not able to care for them if something may arise. I do not get buzzed or drunk but 2-3 times a year but I really do enjoy that beer while I prepare dinner. I dont think that an alocholic beverage is something to hide from your children. My kids will have little sips here and there and im not going to make a big deal out of it so it doesnt become a big deal as they get older. Ok off topic. I am in the 52% but its not to help me sleep its because I enjoy it and find it relaxing. I also quit smoking cigarrettes about 6 years ago so maybe its my "thing"

I used to drink every evening... one cocktail while I was cooking dinner, one cocktail after the kids went to bed. Once my fiance admitted to having alcoholism in his family (and dare I say, is a self-admitting functioning alcoholic), we don't drink every night anymore. Every so often on the weekend we'll have a drink if we're with friends drinking, but we don't drink near as much anymore. I still sneak in that one cocktail while I'm making dinner if my guy isn't home yet, but I don't do it around him out of respect for him not trying to drink :)

If I open a bottle of wine, I'll have a glass a night until the bottle is finished. It could take up to a week to finish off just one bottle. So for that week, I'd be drinking during the week, not just the weekend. Then I could go for weeks without a drop. I enjoy the occasional glass of wine, but I know many, many people who have a glass each and every single night of their adult lives, for the health benefits, for pleasure, for whatever reason. I have no problem with that... it's legal and enjoyable. I also think there's also a difference between having a glass of wine before bed and drinking so much you can't get out of bed the next morning...one is totally under control and the other is a problem. One glass of wine wouldn't affect me the next day at all - one *bottle* of wine, however...well, I've never done that, so I don't know.

I drink often, but not a lot at one time. I have a glass of wine (as in ONE) at night after my son goes to bed, or occasionally with my mom. I drink because I like the taste of wine, not because I am trying to get a buzz or help me sleep. That's why I keep it at one. Rarely do I drink two, and then it is over the course of many hours. I also like a good beer now and then. Again, keeping it at one.

1 glass of wine is not going to get you drunk or alter your "state of consciousness", and it's said that 1 glass of red wine a night is actually healthy for heart. That said, I feel like a total unsophisticated goober, but I just don't like wine. I taste them, I can tell what is a "good" wine and why, but I just don't like the taste enough to drink it.
Sometimes my husband will have some wine if I pull it out with a special dinner I'm making, or I'll serve it when having a dinner party. I'm more of a mixed drink kind of girl though, and will have a couple when we are on date night, but really that's about it. I was the bartender AND cook at my birthday party and had 11 without noticing, and realized that I still have to watch myself, even though it's been years. Noone could tell I'd had any, but I felt it for the first time 6 years and told my husband and laid off immediately. I just don't want to get out of control because we both had problems with alcohol in our past. (My late teens in New Orleans had me drinking 2 pints of vodka everyday as the WARM UP before going out to drink...it was just to get me in the mood to dance and drink...and that was 7 days a week for a year. My husband, in his youth, drank 40 beers a day. So we watch carefully to make sure we don't fall into that again. But sticking to the 2 cocktails over dinner on dates works well for us. I view it like cheesecake: tastes nice, feels comfy, but not something I'm going to do often. For drinking a glass of red wine a night though, it is good for you and may calm you, I wouldn't find anything odd about it at all. I just think it's "yucky" tasting, myself.

52% doesn't seem high at all. Some people drink while cooking, others drink with dinner, others (like me) enjoy a drink after my son has gone to bed. It helps me unwind and relax at the end of the day. I read that for a woman, up to 7 drinks a week is "ok". Since I don't go out all that much, even during holidays, I only have maybe 2 drinks. I am 33 yrs old and don't really drink during the week, not even really on the weekends either....we are more the kind of people who will have a drink if we do go out to a nice dinner or buy some beer during football/baseball season for the weekends and that's about it.

In the summer it is a different story! I enjoy making up and trying new cocktails and just hanging out by the pool! So during the summer I guess that I will probably drink on average 1-2x during the week and at least 1x on the weekend...? This is a rough estimate but I know for a fact that I am more of a drinker in the summer time!

And when you're home all day with kids and have very little adult interaction, sometimes you just need an "escape" As long as you don't start NEEDING a drink, I think its fine.

I don't get enough sleep... recently I have discovered that it DOES help me sleep, so maybe once or twice a week I'll have some drinks. I will have a beer or two or three so I can unwind and sleep. If I have wine, NEVER more than two glasses (maybe I'm pouring more than 5 oz- seems to effect me more than beer). I never get "drunk"- I hate that feeling, and it would NOT help me sleep, I'd feel too uncomfortable. Only do this late at night if at all. WAY after the kids go to sleep.

I would probably have one daily, except hubby doesn't usually drink it and it tends to 'turn' before I finish a bottle. It is too expensive to buy a bottle and only drink one glass, so I usually wait until we have company to open one.

Hubby prefers beer, so he'll often have a beer or two to unwind before/with/after dinner. I like beer with certain foods (pizza, tacos, etc) but usually prefer wine. So I do without so I don't have to open a bottle that is going to mostly be poured down the sink.

answers from Hartford on

Keep in mind that when articles like that are done, they're likely meaning "a drink" in the very literal sense and counting per serving, not how much a glass is filled up. A single drink is equal to 1.2 tablespoons of pure alcohol.

12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of hard liquor all have the same amount of pure alcohol in them (1.2 TBS). So if you take the article literally and a person has a glass of wine before bed to help wind down, then they're only drinking 5 ounces. That's not enough to get drunk on (aka buzzed or more since "buzzed" is legally drunk). It takes men's bodies about an hour to completely break down a single drink, and it takes women's bodies about two hours. Women who have more than three drinks a day risk causing an alcohol disorder and impaired thinking.

Okay, so with that out of the way, if I have a drink during the week it's only a single drink and it's after the girls have gone to bed. On a weekend it's socially. I don't drink very often at all, maybe once a month but usually less. I'm a social drinker and don't even usually keep anything in the house unless I've received wine as a gift.

I see nothing wrong with the premise of a mom having a glass of wine nightly whether she's a working mom or not. A single drink isn't going to impair her or make her a bad mother. I've been known to share a drink with a neighbor after a particularly rough day. No one was irresponsible or drinking while driving or driving after drinking. The judgmental attitudes about this particular scenario are appalling and shocking to me.

I used to get smashed about once a month-three beers and sometimes a shot of Grey Goose. Wine gives me massive headaches if I have more than one glass, so I only have one glass on Thanksgiving (FIL makes a delicious blackberry wine). But for the past two years I've either been pregnant or nursing, so I'm looking forward to having those beers again this weekend!

I don't drink much, period. I am more of a social drinker but I practice caution. I don't think a glass of wine is a big deal though. I will sometimes have a glass of red wine or sangria at a dinner party or for lunch with co-workers when we decide to splurge and spoil ourselves, and it doesn't make me tipsy -- at ALL. I grew up in Europe and it is customary for people to drink wine DAILY with their meals for dinner. All of my family members do it and they aren't stumbling around the kitchen, even after 3-4 glasses of wine in one night. It's wine we're talking about here, not moonshine. I still think a glass of wine is a healthier alternative than say, a sleeping pill which can have all kinds of side effects. Some people smoke a cigarette, others smoke pot. I have drank a glass of Jack Daniels on the rocks at night and gone to work the next morning without issue. The key is moderation and drinking slowly, not downing shots. You want to have a drink or two, not drink till you're dancing on tabletops and stripping down for the neighbors.

The last time I had a drink was my work Xmas party (my co-workers thought it was funny to see me holding a drink b/c they've never seen it before!). I guess I pretty much stopped drinking when I tried to get pregnant ~ I didn't drink the entire 8 mo. it took me to get pregnant w/ my 1st, through my entire pregnancy, or much after b/c I attempted breast feeding. It took 4 years to get pregnant w/ my 2nd. I didn't want to risk drinking while pregnant, so I didn't drink while we tried. So, no I don't drink on weeknights to wind down/sleep.
