How Soon After Nursing Do You Give Solids?

I just started on rice cereal with my six month old and I am trying to wait an hour or so after he eats to give him cereal. This however is making my life a bit more complicated. Can I give him the cereal right after nursing, or will he be so full that he won't eat any of it? How do some of you handle nursing and giving solids? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I used to give my daughter cereal then her formula. My sister does the same thing and she's breastfeeding. At that age, she was never given enough cereal to fill her up, so she didnt have any problems finishing her bottle too.

Remember at this age, food is for exposure to textures, temperatures... not for nutrition. They get everything they need from YOUR BreastMilk!! SO, always nurse first so they fill up on FANTASTIC nutrition, then offer whatever food you want for them to experience it. You can do it right away or wait till you have time, really doesn't matter. I always nursed before my husband and I ate, then offered the baby something to eat/play with while we ate our meal.

Just remember that giving babies any kind of cereal or baby food is more for them to learn how to eat from a spoon and learn textures and is not the to become the primary source of food. Breast milk or formula should the the primary food source until 1 year of age. With that said you could just give your baby cereal once a day and only a couple spoonfuls. That could be done before or after nursing and because it is just a little amount he should still nurse with it. Also don't stress too much about it. Both my babies hated all baby food and so they went from breast milk to table food. Never having baby food. They were healthy, happy and fat LOL

I nursed one side, then gave cereal, then finished nursing the other side. That way, she wasn't too hungry and getting frustrated while she learned to eat, and she still got the nutrition from plenty of breastmilk. I agree that most of the nourishment should come from the milk, but you can give cereal (and veggies and fruit when you're ready) 3 times a day so your baby transitions to eating meals like big people do. Life seemed to be much easier when she ate three meals, milk and solids, a day (plus one extra nursing time) rather than snacks all day. You're doing a good job Mama!

At 6 months, I would feed him solids at 7 am, he'd nurse at 8 and 10, then eat solids at 11:30, nurse an hour later. I'd nurse an hour before his solids dinner.

Now, at 7.5 months, he still nurses about an hour after having his solids. I know they say to do the nursing first, but he would refuse my boob, so we just got into the habit of solids first.

You should give him cereal in conjunction with a nursing session. You create a meal for your baby with nursing being the main source of nutrition.

During my sons food feeding I would give the cereal and than top off with milk. Since he was only getting one, and than a little later 2, he was still getting plenty of feedings with just formula.
