A beach theme is good for both boys and girls. Dolphins, fish, sea shells etc. There are many things out there at different stores that would go with a beach theme. I have dolphins in ours with sand hand prints on the walls that the kids made when they were little and the shower curtain has many different fish and a ocean theme. I alternate the towels as I bought both dolphin towels and towels with fish on them and liked them both so couldn't decide which I liked better. Also maybe a favorite cartoon character that all of your children like although you will probably be changing that theme in a few years as they outgrow it. There are several cheap ocean things at Dollar Tree, and the old time pottery has different pictured rugs. I got a nice big dolphin rug there for 7.00. you can get a dolphin or ocean theme calendar and laminate the pictures or just frame them with nice frames.

Hey girlie! I was just at Target last night and saw some wonderful bathroom decorations!! One has sand castles and crabs...there's a really cute monkey theme...a sea theme, with seahorses, star fish, etc. They're all in bright colors and would look great for a unisex bathroom!!
Good luck!

Disney theme or their favorite cartoon. I have a friend (without children...lol) that has a Mickey Mouse bathroom. Everything is painted black/white/red and has Mickey and Minnie EVERYTHING...shower curtain, soap dish, toothbrush holder, rug (bathmat), wall trim, trash can, figurines....you name it, it's there!

Let them choose something they can agree on, so they have 'ownership' of it, and maybe they will even keep it cleaner for you!

My daughter-in-law has the cutest bathroom on the fish theme. The toothbrushes and holder are "fishy," the shower curtain is full of colorful fish, and a picture of fish is on the wall. I think it's appropriate because of all the bathtub "swimming" and fun fish toys. Also, you can find MANY items on this theme. In my own bathroom (not made for children), the wallpaper has fish and bubbles.

Under the sea. Fish, seahorses, turtles, dolphins etc. You can get really creative with colored fish nets and shells, maybe a small porthole mirror, anchor, lifesaver ring etc. Hope this helps. We did this and found some super colorful tropical fish appliques on EBay. A lady makes them from fabric then you just glide them through liquid starch and apply them to the wall. When you want to take them down, just peel them off easily and wipe the wall with a damp sponge. they are re-usable too. Good luck. We had a lot of fun doing ours!!

Hi L.,
I would suggest a fish theme, most bathroom items are available in underwater theme things, and from the ages of your kids, I would think they would like it. Your 3 year old is old enough to point out things she likes, so you may be able to ask each of the older 3 kids to help in deciding. It will also give them some input and make them really feel like it is their bathroom. And with an underwater them, there are lots of variables, starfish, seahorses, etc. My (almost) 4 year old helped pick out the soap dispenser for the bathroom just 2 weeks ago, and it has actually made it easier for her to remember to wash her hands.

If underwater isn't your style (or your kids don't like it), you might try getting a bathroom decorating mag, and sitting down with them to find out what they like best.

Overall I would just say that if you involve them they will love it more, and you may discover something about 1 or all of them you didn't even know.

Good Luck,
R.

I'm going with the beach theme myself! We even have cute pool towels instead of regular bathroom towels--they are big enough to wrap around everyone: even the "big kids!" To save money, you can get them on sale at the end of the season. You can use little sand pails for holding toothbrushes, etc.

I have been searching for the same thing. My girlfriend has both boy and girls as well as myself and she re did her kids bathroom in a tiki lounge. It is so cute! Her shower curtain is kind of rainforest like with monkeys and trees, bamboo. She took a couple grass skirts, trimmed the grass on them short and put that around the top of the ceiling as a border and framed the mirror with bamboo. It is way cute. Good luck!!!

You could do just a plain ol' black, white, and red color scheme...get red or black towels as they won't show dirt as bad. Find you a bold shower curtain incorporating those three colors or just one and you could even then find either some cute black and white age appropriate pictures or get some good black and white photos of your kiddos blown up and mat them, frame them and hang them. That would be adorable and unisex plus it would grow with them too. You could even stripe the walls or add a border of their hand prints - that was a great idea below. Cute!
Another idea is to paint the walls a blue-ish color and get white paint and add in clouds. That is fairly gender neutral. As would be a safari theme. A surf theme would be fun! Not sure if any of those have been suggested as I didn't read through them all.
Have fun with it. Maybe you could post what you end up doing...with pics! :)

We are building a house, and I took my to shop for their bathroom themes. We went to Target, they had some really cute themes. They had a Safari theme....was really cute, and all kinds. Or if you don't want a "theme", try picking a few colors and going with stripes as a shower curtain pattern, and accessorize from there. But you seem to have younger kids, so I would go with "cute", bafore they grow upand don't like t be "cute" anymore. Then you could get different colors of towel for each child and such to go with the colors that are in your theme.

Anyway, I know I'm babbling. I just wanted to let yo know that Target had some cute things and themes.

I'll steal an idea and pass it along....my sister moved into a house that had a long galley style bathroom for the kids. The previous owner had painted a mural of the United States map on the long wall. It was done in many different colors and had all the states with their capitals named. Hawaii & Alaska were on the side wall. There are also quite a few pictures (maybe 15 or 20) drawn on there - the Arch over St. Louis, a Mickey Mouse over FL, the Hollywood sign in CA, etc. She just bought a bright striped shower curtain and matching solid towels; her three yr old daughter loves it & I am sure her 4 mo old son will too!

I did see the cute Target that SarahJ was talking about. Go with a jungle theme and find some banana and flower wall peg hangers would be cute.

A friend of mine has JohnDeer with flowers for her and her husband. The room is pink she has John Deer hand towels and a bath towel for him and pink rose towels for her. Shower Curtain is John Deer Hand soaps are roses and tires...I have to see where she got those if your interested let me know.

A fish or ocean themed bath is great for both girls and boys, and there are many choices out there for accessories and color-schemes. If you go with something less cartoon-like and slightly more realistic, they won't outgrown it before you need to redecorate. My kids (girl 7 & boy 3) love our 'fishy' bathroom. Also, your kids will love it even more if you let them help you choose the decor. The trick so you don't end up with something too crazy is to only show them things you like to begin with. And don't give them too many choices or they (and you) will be overwhelmed.

I love to shop, redecorate & so on ( I work full-time, outside of the home) & this has been a blessing for my family/husband. The potential income is GRRRRREAT, I do it at my own pace, wonderful tax write offs (for the home) & sahm seem to love it because it doesn't interfear with their kids or their lifestyles. WOW! 25 years old and 4 kids. You are busy! And an early bloomer :) My 8 yr. old son and 3 year old daughter share a bathroom. With 2, and a small bathroom, this was easy. May be more of an endeavor w/ 4 kids. But I painted the walls pale pale blue, then with a pale green paint (curtain has those colors, so I thought I'd go w/ matching), I painted their hands and had them put their handprints as a "border" along the center of the wall. I did his print, then hers, then his, etc.... Basically, when you are sitting on the toilet, the handprint border is eye level.

Hi L., When I lived in LA, I created a bath for a girl & boy that could grow with them. One whole wall was a beach with chairs & umbrellas seagulls, sailboats, driftwood, & done really muted. then I used primary colors for towels, hooks made out of boats & a little beach chair, primary striped curtain. Then when they got to 10 & 12, I did a bold blue & white striped curtain, striped ball hooks, & towels in cobalt blue & aqua. Then when they got into teens, We changed hardware to silver, white terry cloth curtain, seagreen & pale blue towels & large glass jars filled with shells the kids had collected. The beach mural stayed the same, I would do little touch ups like change stripes on umbrella from red to blue to aqua...The kids LOVED it & It really worked! Hope this helps.

I personally really like the new line of monkeys out by Target...but watch out, there are actually 2 lines there!

Walmart had a really cute line out last year that wasn't too kiddy and was acceptable for adults as well...great colors in a light teal blue, red, yellow, orange, and lime...I got the shower curtain and several of the bath things like soap dispenser, toothbrush holder, etc. for my friend...The towels were even cheap and really nice...only $3.67 for a big bath towel...you can get them in solid colors or white with a colored strip across the bottom.

I'd also get some feedback from the kids...perhaps there is something that they are interested in that could be combined (i.e. zoo animals, farm animals, transportation, letters, etc.).

My husband and I also put together some undersea life puzzles and then used puzzlesaver on them and framed them. It adds something of a personal touch. I have a friend who has a rubber-duck bathroom that is totally over-the-top. She had to hunt a bit for some of the pieces, but I think ducks are coming back in style, so it might be easier to find things now. I'd also add frogs and hot air balloons to the list of fun ideas. I've seen both, but I think the balloons migh be more difficult to find.
