Roaches like cool moist areas. Professionals are the way to go, in my opinion. I brought roaches home once with dog food from the store. The roaches liked living beneath the sink, around the edges up underneath where the sink was dropped into the countertop - it was cool and dark there. Even though I had professionals for the year, it still took awhile to locate where they were nesting. They also like to lay their eggs in steel wool, which is what I had poked into holes to keep mice and roaches from coming in around the water pipes. Roache motels wrok to combat the older one, but if you don't locate where the eggs are being laid you will never get rid of them.

An exterminator is a good source. However, you need to pull out everything from the cabinets, wash the cabinets out/down with bleach/water/apply new cabinet liners. Empty your garbage cans every day. Do not leave food/beverages out in the open for long periods of time. Clean your stove/kitchen after each use. Bathrooms about three times a week if not every day. Roaches can come up drainage pipes.

Good luck.

Use A. exterminator and make sure they are green. Most use kid and animal safe products but it is always safer to ask.

Bengal Gold spray. You can find it at any grocery store (even Walmart). We had a bad roach problem when we bought our house 3 years ago but now we spray that once every six months and have no problems now (other than the occasional dead one we might find in the morning). Be sure to spray anywhere indoors where there is a water source (i.e. kitchens and bathrooms) and also anywhere walls/drywall meets brick indoors (i.e. around a fireplace). They LOVE to come out between the bricks.

Your friend is right! They are evil invaders & they travel in masses!
The only thing I found that gets rid of them is Home Defense. You can get it in the Home and Garden area. I use it b/c there are no fumes or such that will affect kids and pets.
Spray ALL baseboards and windows...inside & out. Spray the foundation of your house as well as a little ways out from it. If you have a lot of trees in your yard or closeby... that's part of the problem. Spray the base of the trees too.
If you have wood floors you'll need to fog the place. If you are in a duplex or apt, your neighbors need to do the same on the same day or the roaches will travel back & forth.
I know it sounds like a lot of stuff to do but if you don't they will keep coming back. I've had professionals come but their solution seems so weak. Home Defense last for at least 6-9 months and it also takes care of all other bugs & spiders!

True..where there si smoke there is fire.
My husband treats our house..the outside with 'viper'. It is very strong so he uses when he knows the kids will be gone all day. Also, you can use the store bombs or call a pest man.

Hi L.,

I would call Terminix. We have used them for our ant problem and now we are ant free. It is true that there are probably many many more roaches. We actullay had Terminix out at my grandma's house recently and after hearing what the Terminix guy had to say about roaches, I would do something really quick. When you see the roaches during the day you can only imagine what happens at night when the lights are off. Sorry to gross you out. Terminix worked for us, but there are many more people who spray for roaches. Hope this helps.

"Roach motels" don't work. If I were you, call an exterminator. He can also recommend some good over the counter exterminators. Good housekeeping habits. Put food away. Don't let your dishes go overnight, etc. I'm not sold on the whole "green" thing. I have a friend that doesn't use pesticides because she is certain that they will horribly affect her children, so she lives with the cockroaches and weavles. The way I look at it, that is more of a hazard than the pesticides. They are LOADED with disease. Not to mention, they walk all over the food, eat it, and then they have to poop it somewhere. The way I look at it, she is sharing her food with the bugs. The same food that her children eat. With the products on todays markets, you don't have to "live" with them. Also, buy a good caulk, and go around your house and caulk up EVERY hole or space.

For every one roach you see out, there are 10 in the walls. Combat has a gel out. Ot's in a syrange type thing. It looks like peanut butter, and it kills and when they walk on it they carry it back to there hiding place and kills other bugs in the walls.

Hi L.,

You need to act fast because they do multiply really fast.
Depending waht kind of cockroach. The little ones grow in numbers over night. The big ones I don't know...Make sure that you have no holes in your trim around your pipes and floor. Then use the roach houses and treat your home with boric acid. That is the safest way to get rid of them.

I don't use any commercial pesticied in my house since it is a pretty big health hazard. And the organic works well and is cheaper. One other thing that I do I spray eucalyptus, citronella oil mixture around the house and I dust with eucalyptus oil. It keeps the bugs away and kills dust mites...the first one kills ants and any other bugs.

Good luck.

Cut to the chase and hire an exterminator.

I tried boric acid and other home remedies for a while with an infestation I had. It was obvious it wasn't working, so I called a natural foods coop I belonged to and asked who they used. I knew that they would be especially sensitive to using natural products.

What I found out is that most exterminators use a pesticide that is a derivative of the chrysanthemum plant.

Are they cockroaches or "water bugs"? There is a difference. The water bugs that I was dealing with in Kentucky were Pennsylvania wood roaches. They're the big black or brown bugs. It's probably a different variety here in Texas. They get about twice the size of what I had before.

I have pets and children around, so I didn't want anything toxic to them. The wood roaches are outside bugs primarily. Treatment is easy. They treat the outside perimeter of the house to create a barrier and then they spray the inside perimeters of the rooms to reinforce the barrier. (Catch 'em comin' and goin'.) Takes about 1/2 hour at most and costs about $60.

1. Call an exterminator. Truly - best 40 bucks you'll spend, and roach free for at least 3 months.

2. If you really must do it yourself, go buy a bottle or two of boric acid. It's on the same aisle as the mops and such at wal-mart. Take off ALL of your switch covers and plug covers. Give each one a good squeeze inside and put them back on. Vacuum / mop for the week. Then put a very very very narrow line of the stuff at the top and bottom of all of your baseboards and treat around the outside of your doors. Sweep to pick up any excess.

I had this issue also. I checked the internet and they had some great ideas. I chose to use Borax mixed with powdered sugar. You can find the borax in your local grocery store. However if you have small children you may want to take another route the white substance looks inviting to children. It truly works. Check the internet they have several options.

THis will sound funny but my mother taught me this and it works. Take the paper roller when finished with toilet paper. Pour a little Elmers Glue inside and let it run from one end to the other. While wet, sprinkle boric acid powder on the glue. Now place these behind ref, under sink at the very back, behind the sofa along the wall, etc. where you or the kids cannot get to them as boric acid is poison. The bugs will dir or go away. Trust me-it works.
