Hi mammasource mommies and daddies!

Our house has very dry air and I bought two humidifiers for my and my sons bedroom. Both said quiet operation but they still make a lot of noise and I can't sleep with them. My son and I have been having a stuffy nose and soar throat every morning for 3 weeks now and we're getting tired of it.

Does anyone know a good humidifier (name, brand, where to get) that is quiet? I wonder if they do exist anyways. Or does anyone know of a better idea to get rid of that morning stuffy nose from dry air?

Thanks much!
M.

We bought the BEST humidifier for my daughters room at Babies R Us, it is a Elmo one it looks like they are swimming in the water, it makes almost no noise, and it is mist free so she doesn't even want to play with it, and we don't have to worry about getting things wet. It was 29.99 and worth every penny. As far as our room goes we got one from Menards that was like 25.00 and it is by Lasko. It's not loud, but its not quiet. Good Luck.

A way to increase the humidity in your home naturally is to get plants. You can also put a bowl of water on or beside of the heating vents if they are on the floor to put some moisture back into the air.

Make sure you are both drinking enough water too- this way your body can make the moisture it needs in your nose and throat at night. I have read that if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

As far as store-bought humidifiers, we bought one at Target for my daughter's room that looks like a frog. They also have them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond that look like pigs and Thomas the Tank Engine. They are VERY quiet and you can adjust the flow of humidity so it does not soak the floor.

Something else we have done when it is VERY dry is to put a very light coating of vaseline right inside the nose just before bed- this helps if you get a sore nose from it being so dry.

Good Luck!

I use the Walgreens Ultrasonic Humidifier. Couple of things with this though.

They are very quiet and you can't hear it, however it does not shut off automatically and you need to make sure it is on a high shelf and not close to the floor.

If you use it close to the floor it soaks everything. If you set it on a dresser or something of that nature it will get wet, so make sure you have something under it like a thick towel.

I use a standalone shelf that is on the wall about 3/4 up and that works well for us. The floor still gets a little wet but not that bad and it works really well for my daughter.

If you don't have a shelf on the wall to put this on, think twice about it, because it really does get everything wet.

We had one put onto our furnace a few years ago. It was not very expensive. It really makes a difference. It's easy to use, open & close it once a year and set humidity based on out side temp. Well worth it. Check with any reputable heating & cooling company in your area. They can do it in an afternoon.

We bought the whole house humidifier system, that hooks to the furnance. It was not the April Air system, it was a cheaper system, but it works great. My husband was able to install it himself and I am sure the system was under $300 dollars. (Be it my husband is really handy). Totally worth it.

We have one built into our furnace. If you can ever go that route, I promise you it's worth EVERY penny you spend on it. I'm not sure how expensive they are since it was part of the purchase price of our home when we built (building another house now and getting another one as an option). That may not be financially feasible now so another thought is a fountain? My inlaws have a very dry house (we are currently staying with them) and we put one of those plug in fountains in our room and leave it on at night and the sound is very soothing and keeps the air in that room bearable. I've also heard that the Babies R Us humidifiers are wonderful as another poster stated. Good luck!
