I Am Almost 33 Weeks Pregnant and I Gained 16.8 Lbs in One Month

I used to weigh about 118 before I was pregnant and currently I am 32 weeks pregnant and weigh 163. I was looking at a chart when I weighed myself last and on 10/08 I weighed 138.2 and on 11/13 I weighed 155! I just saw my Dr last week and he said that I was fine because I am not obese. I am concerned because my face, ankles and feet have been swelling up. I know my legs/ankles are swelling because of the weight of the baby but my face and hands give me reason to be concerned. I also feel so guilty because for about the past couple of months I have been eating not so good. I have been eating a lot sugary things and I am trying hard not to. I am not sure if that would have something to do with it. Please any input would be appreciated, thank you

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. It really helps to know what others' experiences are :) I called my Dr and was told that I should be fine because all of my tests and urinalysis have been normal. They would be more concerned if I didn't gain enough weight. And they did tell me to lay off the sweets and that my weight gain might slow down now that I am nearing the end of my pregnancy. I started by saying no to sweets and I am trying to drink more water. Thank you all for your help :)

I would be more worried about the face and hand swelling than the weight gain. You could be developing gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia. No need to panic, but talk to your doctor soon about the swelling. There are easy tests they can do for either issue to quickly rule it out.

I did really well carrying twins and only gaining about a 1/2-1 pound a week. (I started out quite overwieght and have diabetes) The doctor said I was doing great and I would likely be smaller after the birth than when I became pregnant.
At about the 30th week I stepped on the scale at the docs office and it said I gained 11 lbs in ONE WEEK!!! I said, "There must be a mistake!" I was freaking out!
The nurse said," I can tell by looking at you that it's water wieght". I ended up gaining about 40 lbs of fluid before developing preeclampsia and having an emergency C-section. The scariest part was that for several weeks before the C-section I would wake at 3-4 am feeling like I couldn't breath. As soon as I sat up I was fine. I was one of the rare women who's preeclampsia did not go away after the birth and I ended up back in the emergency room within hours of being released. I had the same thing happen at the same time and something in my brain (or that still, small voice from heaven) said "Do NOT go back to sleep!" Called the doc, went back to hospital (where the girls still were anyway) and was rushed into the ER. I asked the girls who were sticking all kinds of wires all over me and a catheter what was going on with my breathing and they said that I was so full of fluid that it had nowhere else to go and was filling my lungs-essentially drowning me in my sleep!!! That was way scarier than an emergency E-section!!!
Anyway, long story, well, long...That rapid of a gain is almost always fluid and can be a precurser to preeclampsia or a sign of gestational diabetes (as some have already mentioned)
Take care of yourself and it never hurts to prop yourself up in a semi seated position to sleep if you get really swollen!!! (I never woke up when in the hospital because I loved the hospital beds and slept half sitting up)

Reading back over that, it sounds scary, but it is VERY rare for preeclampsia to not end with the birth of baby. In addition, I was an "older" mom with preexisting health conditions and the twins made everything x2, including fluid gain!

Talk to your dr. again. Like Sue said, this could be gestational diabetes. Have you had the test for this yet. I can't remember but I think they test for this arond this time.

By the sounds of it, you could also be eating too much bad stuff. You don't eant to gain too much weight because it will be such a pain to get off. Good luck. Try not to stress too much about it but also try to curb your diet a bit.

yikes. First of all, if you have had massive water weight gain since the last time the nurse took your blood pressure, make sure your dr. knows as it could be a sign of preeclamsia and that is serious stuff.
If it is mostly water weight, be glad, that will shed on its own within weeks of delivering. Its the fat, not the water that can be hard to get rid of after baby. Also, I gained all my 30 lbs by about week 34, then tapered off and didn't gain at the end of pregnancy. I also cut myself off sugar and sweats because i didn't want a big baby. I know woman who gained 50 and even 70 lbs during pregnancy and it all came off, and I know others who were forever overweight after pregnancy weight gain. We are all so different.

Well, I can tell you that with my first pregnancy I gained 50 lbs (whoops!) and was pretty close to the same mark with my 2nd. Should you try to eat healthier for the rest of this? Probably, but ultimately, if your dr isn't worried, don't stress too much about it. :)

I would be concerned about both water weight gain and the possibility of gestational diabetes. I recommend speaking with your doctor again and not letting him brush this off. 25-35 lbs is still the recommended amount of weight gain with a pregnancy, no matter if you were "not obese" when you got pregnant. Excessive weight gain and water weight gain can lead to serious complications. I would seriously speak with your doctor again right away.

its the junk food.. i went from 130 to 180!!.. in the begining it was steady gain.. then once i got like half way through n saw my tummy getting bigger i developed kind of a "screw it im eating it im already fat" kind of attitude... big mistake!!.. totally regretting it now .. for me it was my rediculous portion sizes not so much about what i was eating ... so now i have a ton more weight to lose .. im down to 150 but the 130lbs i weighed before i got pregnant was aftr gaining 15lbs.. my "perfect" weight is somewher around 115 so i have quite a ways to go!
as far as swelling my ankles were huge the last month or so - less salt, more water, put your feet up!!

i should add that i had an unusually large amount of fluid in me around the baby.. that could be adding to it to

It sounds like water gain mixed in with regular gain.. I gained alot with my son like that.

Go back to the food Pyrmid and eat the essentials. Fruit, veggies, grains, protein and dairy.

A few more weeks and it will be over with, and the weight loss can begin. But keep in mind it took you 9 months to gian, you are not going to loose it in a week.

Now is not the definitive time to be dieting-but if you can cut sugar out of your diet-that would be beneficial-I know how hard this is-believe me!. Also-if you started at 118-you were probably a bit underweight to begin with plus fluid is probably what is contributing to the big gain. Take it easy-you've got 7 more weeks-try to eat more fruits and veggies-this will help carry some of the unnecessary fluid out of the body. Best of luck!

Drink lots of water.
It helps flush out your system and can help reduce water retention.
I did not do junk food while pregnant but I gained 65 lbs.
I lost 20 lbs giving birth and in the following 2 weeks lost another 20 lbs.
I was holding a lot of water and postpartum - I sweated and peed so much it was alarming (oh but it felt SO GOOD to have my kidneys to myself again!).
With drinking a lot of water and breast feeding the rest of the weight came off over the next several months.
Try eating some veggies and protein instead of so much of the sugary stuff.
I wanted more broccoli than usual when I was pregnant and I loved star fruit.

I was about your weight (and 5'8") with my first and gained 19 lbs. with my first baby. I didn't do anything special but I've always jogged (even pregnant up to the second trimester) and eaten healthy. And my babies are always 8 or 9 lbs., or more. The next 3 babies, 30 lbs. gained with each. But with nursing it was easy to lose, and continued exercise and eating well. You don't mention your exercise routine but I think it would be really hard to gain a healthy weight without one. Strapping on non-slip traction things for your shoes and walking fast for two miles, even if it's dark and freezing (I can only go after husband is home) is good the third trimester (jogging being uncomfortable), along with basic weights or pushups, etc. Stuff you can do at home. Good luck!

You definitely are right to be concerned about the sudden weight gain and swelling moving up to hands and face. Excessive swelling or edema and sudden weight gain can be a symptom of preeclampsia: http://www.preeclampsia.org/health-information/signs-and-...

How has your blood pressure been doing? If it is higher than your normal non pregnant baseline (30/15) that can also be a red flag.

Is your doctor concerned about it? My last month of pregnancy, things used to swell up. I gained about 40-45 lbs. with each kid, and lost it afterward.

You only have 7 weeks to go, it doesn't sound too terrible or abnormal. Just check with your doctor.

I agree with Everley and the swelling is the part that concerns me especially of the face and hands, etc. Pre Eclampsia can be dangerous so mention that concern to your doctor.
