AZO is a good idea, but don't forget about cranberry juice or even cranberry tablets--may be a good preventative for you. Something in cranberry makes the lining of the bladder inhospitable to bacteria... Also, drink TONS of liquids to continuously flush the bladder so that the bacteria can't hold on!

Hi Ci A
You need to drink lots of Cranberry Juice or get capsules in the Health food store, as well as blueberries.
You most likely have taken antibiotics the last time, which the Dr. will prescripe to you again. They certainly help but they as well deplete you of the good bacteria that exist in your body. This upset in the balance of healthy bacteria may interfere with the proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. Lot's of plain yogurt or probiotics are essential.
There ar steps you can take for future prevention:
*Drink plenty of water
*Urinate when you feel the urge
*Wipe from the front to the back
*Cleanse the genital area daily and before intercourse
*Urinate after sexual intercourse
Hope this helps and will keep you from further infections.

Hi C..
I know exactly how uncomfortable UTIs are. I can wipe with the wrong scented toilet tissue and I get one, uaually about 4-6 times a year.

Since you state AGAIN, I'm assuming you got it recently or else it is an ongoing thing. I can't give you any advise as to help you NOW, but you can do this.

Ask your doctor to give you an advanced prescription for Pyridium (phenazopyridine). He can give you extras to keep on hand to when this happens, you can take them immediately and not have to hurt till you get to him.

Good Luck!

Go to Rite Aid r CVS and ask the pharmacist. I can't remember the name of the medicine but they do sell something over the counter. I think the med starts with the letter U, but can't be positive. Also cranberry juice and lots of it. Make sure you drink tons because the more concentrated your pee is the more it hurst so drink plenty and then drink some mre. Also no caffeine or alcohol. Feel better!!!!

i feel your pain. i had one a month ago and couldn't sleep. i have a friend who is a physician assistant and called her at 5am, it was that bad. i was lucky enough to get an early dr appt the next day for a Rx but was also told about "pyridine". they have an otc version of it, so it my be worth asking the local pharmacy if they carry the OTC version. GOOD LUCK

C.,

There is a product that you can buy, over the counter, that is called Uro-Calm, which should help, at least a bit until you can see the doctor tomorrow. Most pharmacies carry it, and it's very inexpensive. You can also take Tylenol or Aspirin along with it, for the pain.

Another thing that may help is to drink as much Cranberry Juice as you can. Cranberry Juice has some natural things in it that will also calm your bladder, and make it easier for you to pass urine, until your doctor prescribes an antibiotic to rid you of the infection.

Hope this helps!

Go to the store and buy a product called "uristat". It is a little purple pill that makes you pee orange. But it will do the trick to take away the pain and you won't have to go so much.

Good Luck.
I've been there before. OUCH!

Go to your health food store and get some cranberry juice concentrate. Add it to a lot of water and drink and drink and drink. You can also take cranberry juice capsules on a daily basis if you are prone to UTIs...ouch!

I feel sooo bad for you, because I have had urinary tract infections several times in my life, and I know the horrible pain you are experiencing. My doctor told me to drink cranberry juice, and plenty of water to flush out my system, in combination with the prescription drug Keflex, which I was told would turn my urine a dark colored orange, so not to be alarmed. I certainly hope you get all better real soon!!!

There is a product over the counter that makes you pee bright orange and it takes away the pain. Ask the guy at the drug stre. I hope you find out why you get them so you can prevent them in the future. Grandma Mary

Its not a cure all, but I find soaking in a bath with vinegar helps. Generally baths are not recommended for people with chronic UTI, but I was told to try vinegar baths to restore the natural ph of the urinary tract. Now when ever I feel anything coming on I soak in a vinegar bath and drink lots of water mixed with cranberry juice and since I started this I have been UTI free for 1.5 years.

Best of Luck!

at this point you probably need an antibiotic. for the future... i used to get them alllll the time, awful. the best thing i did was - as soon as i felt the very first "uh oh", i would start doing shots of cranberry concentrate, you can mix with a little water if you need to, the stuff is vile. do as much as your stomach can handle, but go slow if you never did it before, it can be rough on your stomach. dilute it as little as you can so you can tolerate it. regular cranberry juice has tons of sugar, it defeats the purpose. i almost never get them anymore, i started to go pee after having sex, always, every time. it worked completely. feel better quick :)

There is already a lot of good info here so the only thing I will add is if you get UTI's with your period. It can help as a preventative to take out the tampon when you pee to empty your bladder completely (though it might not be so practical if you have to go every 5 minutes!).

Hi there!
Unfortunately I have had my fair share of UTI's. A medicine I swear by that is OTC is AZO. You can find it in any drugstore. It kicks in about 15 minutes after taking it and completely numbs the pain. Just keep in mind that it doesn't clear up the infection. It just treats the pain. So you will still need an antibiotic and quickly so that it doesn't spread to the kidneys. make sure to shower and not bathe. Also, after intercourse always make sure to use the bathroom. It will flush out any bacteria. Sorry to be graphic, but it is one of the best ways to prevent one. And of course, always wipe front to back. Hope this helps!

I think you probably have your appointment today, but for next time, get Uristat. I'm not sure if that is the AZO that the other two replies were talking about. Uristat also makes your pee orange and it starts working straight away. It's by the makers of Monistat. I bought boatloads of it since I used to get them every month. It doesn't cure it but one doctor actually told me that it skews the urine test results when they try to figure out exactly which bacteria is causing it. The test will still show you have a UTI but they won't be able to determine which bacteria caused it. Didn't matter to me, I'd rather feel some relief! Hope your feeling better soon!
