I Need a Style Makeover!

I have recently lost 30 pounds and need to purchase a totally new wardrobe for summer since nothing I have fits anymore. It's a great problem to have, but I'm lost on where to start. I don't even really know where to shop for my 39 year old size 6 body. I'm sure I could cobble together a functional wardrobe from pieces I find at all sorts of stores - TJ Maxx, Old Navy, REI, J Jill, etc. but I'm not very good in the style department and in the past I have ended up with tons of tops that don't match any bottoms, or shoes i can't wear with anything I own.

So any advice on how to identify the key basic pieces I should buy and how to appropriately mix and match? Are there websites out there that give recommendations on what every summer wardrobe needs (for real people... I read one magazine that said I needed a strapless maxi dress, gold ballet flats, and all sorts of other silly stuff that no one in my area would wear) Or are there stores where I can get a little style help? I want to look good, of course - but I also want to look age appropriate and not spend a million dollars!

What can I do next?

My ideal basic wardrobe would consist of three Pairs of jeans, two nice pairs of slacks, and some cropped pants/jeans, shorts, and skirts, mostly all in different shades of denim or black. That way they go with everything, lots of cute top options. I'd have some basic tees and tanks, light hoodies and cardigans, cute tops in florals and stripes. And yes a strapless maxi dress among a few other dresses. Brown boots, black boots, two pairs of sandals, a cute pair of heels, and ballet flats in fun colors. I love TJ Maxx/Marshall's, old navy/gap, even target. Also the limited, Anthropologie, h&m. And congrats on the weight loss! :)

Go to a personal shopper. Nordstrom, Macy's and I think Dillards have them.

I have a friend who works at White House Black Market and I love that store. She helps me a lot because we are both about the same size 0-2 with big natural boobs. When she gets something in that she loves, she calls me to come try on. I have basic nice black pants, kakhi pants and I got some white, royal blue, denim and the new purplish color WHBM has out this season jeans. I LOVE them. You can dress them up or down.

If you find someone you connect with style wise and they know what you like and are comfortable with, make sure to try on everything they suggest. I have turned my nose up at a couple of tops only to end up with them being my favorites!!

Ann Taylor and LOFT usually have helpful associates as well.

If you go to the discounters like TJ Maxx, Ross, etc, you are on your own. Sometimes you can find something cute but it is a lot of work to sort through everything on the racks.

WHBM also has good promotions and sales. I paid 1/2 price for 2 pairs of my pants a couple weeks ago as well as a dressy knit top.

Have fun shopping and congratulations on your weight loss!

Okay, at least here in my city, if you go to Macy's, they have a personal shopper and it is free.
They, based on what you tell them & per your budget, will help you compile outfits. You can either then buy it or not.
Thus, you have "expert" help on outfitting yourself.
And if you have a Macy's card, then often times you can get more discounts or 10% off type things.

GO to ann taylor store and try a few things. it depends on if you're looking for every day clothes or work clothes (for work clothes i won't give you advice), but for every day clothes (assuming spring/summer), get capri pants (light cream color), a few tops (try a few kinds and see which ones fit you best), get flats (i get all my shoes on amazon.com, for comfy flats i recommend stuart weitzman and kate spade (they run true to size), then get 1 or 2 pairs of sandals (i like tory burch). then get a mid length dress (ann taylor has awesome ones), and a cardigan.
don't buy at the store. try everything, then make a mental note what you liked (take pics with phone if you can) then wait. online ann taylor has 40 per cent off extra sale items almost all the time. so you will pay peanuts for great stuff. ann taylor runs true to size, clothes aren't frumpy and for your age are beautiful.
after you get a few pieces you like, then as time goes by and things go on sale, you add to your wardrobe.
ps i don't like maxi dresses on any type of body.

ok, you are in a hot area right. and I am tempted to ask your coloring just so i can have some extra fun visualizing your virtual makeover.

ok summer

for running errands and hanging w kids and back yard picnics etc

-5 tshirts I prefer solid colors but what ever floats your boat
-3 tank tops if you are all buff now.
-i wear shorts so demin, kakhi and black or navy or if you prefer skirts thats and option.
I love my kakhi and black capri's and need to replace them i wear them sooo much

a nice sturdy pair of sandals for those and maybe a nicer leather pair of sandals if you want to be a bit more polished.

the suggestion for yoga pants and hoodie are great, I don't have any since i fear the bulges but i 'm sure if you shop around and are skinny now you could find something.

a couple cute dresses would be great for running around too.

To get back to the color scheme, If you pick out your best color and pair that with a neutral or two, ok so your color is red and you pair that with Black, or you color is SeaFoam green and Kakhi/tan then you pick Ensembles that all work together,
so a red t shirt, that you can wear with black capris, or jeans or a cute demin skirt. don't want the red T switch it would with a red and white polka dot blouse, or a red tank and a denim jacket. ---
THat's what i took away from flylady and missusmartypants.com years ago.

good luck and have fun.

I would buy dresses for now till you know your long term weight. You could loose more or gain a little back. Dresses for sure match :) Depending on your height the style will have to be determined by trying different ones on. Like I have long legs and I'm 5"7 - maxi dresses look great on me. My friend who is shorter looks great in those 60 style dresses that go out from the waist and are knee length. There are also A line with empire waists, straight down etc.. Then you just need a few colors of strappy sandals and jazzy flip flops and your set. For casual wear go to Gap Body and get a few yoga pants and zip hoodies pair with some cute sneakers.

Go to the large department stores and buy the ensembles they have on the mannequins (in your size of course...the clothes should be on the racks close by). Not only are they the most updated looks, the outfit is already put together for you, sometimes down to the accessories, saving you some time and decisions.

I love Peruvian Collection for summer clothes. Pretty and elegant.

I need alot of help with my wardrobe but I'm also very lazy when it comes to fashion/style, so when I'm on a website, I just get whatever they have on the front page or feature pages.

Old Navy online pairs a lot of outfits together. Start there and see what you like. Make a list of "pieces" you like and stick to it when you're out shopping.
