I Need Help with Snoring Hubby!

In the past 6 weeks or so my hubby has started snoring VERY LOUDLY at night. Enough that it can keep me awake. We all know how desperate we can get for sleep!

He has gained some weight and doesn't have a cold or anything so I'm wondering if it's related to the weight gain. I got some of those breathe right strips to try out. Hopefully I can get him to wear one.

Has anyone here suffered through this? Got any suggestions?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for their responses! I can't believe how many of us are not getting any sleep because of snoring hubbies! Yesterday he went to the doctor (at my insistence) who told him that he needed to lose about 20 pounds or he could have surgery. Of course that's what I said, but what do I know. So this morning he got up early to run. Let's see how this goes.....thanks!

I asked for help on this one myself a bit back and tried some of the over counter solutions. Rather we bought them but hubby still seldom uses them. My solution is to wake him up, shove his head sideways and hope he stops. He thinks Vicks help him. So he puts a little in his nose after I wake himup a coule of times. You think that would bother him. He really should go to the doctor but he won't. It really is aggravating and I love sleeping in the same bed with him so I haven't slept elsewhere. I use earplugs, they sort of help. These are the same earplugs that the guys use to block out machinery noises of high intensity. Just goes to show how loud he snores. Oh my I wish I could help. I can't figure out why snoring bothers me so much when the noises outside don't seem to. It's probably because they are very loud, then soft, then loud and change pattern. Ugh. I am going to watch the answers here. I sure hope there is someone who has a new solution.

I have the same problem! And we tried everything over the counter for him and none of it worked. So through his dentist we had an appliance made, but he hated wearing it so quit wearing it! I suffer every night! And I'm 35 weeks pregnant right now and up and down through the night going to the bathroom and sometimes just have the hardest time falling back asleep because of his snoring! I feel your pain!

I was reading other responses and most of them said try a cool mist humidifer. I will be trying that myself! I would also have him (if he would go) try and see his doctor too. And maybe do a sleep apnea test. It may encourage him after he finds out the results of the test to try and change and get an appliance made!

Good luck!

I know you got a lot of responses, but thought I'd let you know I go through the same thing. My husand is not over weight, but snores so loud I'm always up. He does have really bad allergies and I think that is his problem. Anyway, I bought Breathe Right for him about a month ago and he uses them every night. They work great for him! I actually get some sleep now (minus the kids waking up). He does put them on right when he goes to bed and takes it off every morning. Sometimes he still snores a bit, but not loudly and it it stops really quickly. Hope this helps.

None of the over the counter stuff worked for my husband. Just this past week, we got a cool mist humidifier, it's been much better. he's also lost 15 lbs. in Jan. So that combo seems to be working! Over the past few years, the heavier he got, the worse it got.

My husband only snores when he's on his back so I always kick him and tell him to roll on his side! However, a friend of mine had the same problem so she sewed pockets into his pajamas to place a tennis ball in so he doesn't roll onto his back when he's sleeping. My husband wouldn't go for that so he can just deal with the bruises!

See your doctor! Have him see the doctor. They can do a sleep study test, try some meds, sometimes it's a breathing issue that causes snoring. Talk to your doctor.

Does he act more sleepy during the day, too? Snoring can be an indicator of sleep apnea, which is exacerbated by being overweight. A sleep medicine doc could run a sleep study. Or, you could try to encourage/motivate him to lose the weight. Hopefully the strips work in the mean time!

Two sets of two words - first set - video camera
second set- sleep study.

This is not healthy, for your marriage, your love life, and mostly - your husband. It is bad for his heart.
I suffered through this for many years, until one sleepless night, I decided to turn on the video camera (also turn on the lights if you can without waking him). Once my husband saw the video of himself making so much noise and seeing himself actually stop breathing, he decided to finally go to the doctor and request a sleep study. I think it was at CDH - insurance covered most of it.
The sleep study indicated that he wasn't getting enough oxygen, and he ended up getting a C-Pap machine.
Now, the CPap machine isn't the most romantic thing in the world - he looks like he's a hazmat guy taking a snooze in my bed, but it is quiet, and once I'm sleeping, I don't care what he looks like. And he gets a much better nights sleep, which makes him more energetic, and willing to work out to try to lose the extra pounds. If only he'd stop eating too much.
Good luck to you.

make him go get a sleep study done. My husband is using a CPAP machine in order to not snore. He has sleep apnea and after a car accident caused by him falling asleep at the wheel he got serious about it and got the machine.

I dealt with a snoring hubby for years and it finally got so bad, I asked him to see a doctor. We thought it was due to weight gain too and sleeping on his back, but it was actually a very bad case of sleep apnea (sp?). He now has a sleep machine and there is no more snoring. The biggest benefit is that we've reduced the health risks associated with the condition. If that's not it, then I think you are stuck with ear plugs. Good luck! M.

It very much so has something to do with his weight. My husband is always a yo yo dieter and when he is on the lighter said the snoring goes away when he's heavy it gets really bad so much so that he had sleep apnea which can be a dangerous sleep disorder that can affect your heart. See if you can encourage him to loose a little bit of weight (maybe you can make him healthy lunches) if not have him see his doctor. Good luck and invest in ear plugs.

I know exactly where you are coming from M.. I haven't slept with my husband for almost a year now. It isn't so much that he snores, but he breathes very loud. Part of his problem is a polyp in his nasal passage that he refuses to get taken care of. But the other, bigger part of it is the weight he has gained. I feel bad that I am not sleeping with him, but I need sleep too. He, himself, has acknowledged that it got worse with the weight gain. You would be surprised what a couple pounds of loss would do to help. I wish you luck and hope that your husband is okay with trying to make things better and does so for you both.

try a cool mist humidifier, that may help.

My husband snore really really bad when he quiet smoking it got a little better. If we go out & he has a couple of beers it gets bad again.
I checked the drug store there are many different things that mayhelp. The breath right strips did not help.
I do believe if it gets really bad, and he sounds like he stops breathing, as my husband does sometimes a trip to the doc is not a bad idea. My husband refuses to believe that he snores that bad, until we recorded him.

I feel your pain, my husband snores VERY loudly also. He has for years and I am a very light sleeper but, here are some things that seem to help. The strips may help, also we have had some luck with a product called Snore Stop. It is an all natural throat spray. Try a vaporizor and maybe a fan to keep air circulating. And last but not least, get yourself some earplugs. The soft kind used for industrial workers. They are very comfortable and you will still be able to hear your alarm etc. Also, since this is a new thing you may want to have him see his doctor to rule out sinus or tonsil issues. Good luck!

I have the same issue with a loudly snoring husband, and many of the responses here sound familiar - earplugs for me, laying on his side, weight gain/alcohol make it worse, Breathe Right strips that he won't wear, sleep apnea possible, etc. However, I also wanted to mention the possibility of reflux (GERD), since my husband has this really bad. He takes meds to control the symptoms of an irritated esophagus & heartburn, especially after acidic/spicy meals, and our bed is propped on blocks at the head-end. Just another possibility! Good luck, M..

Hi! it sounds as if your hubby has Sleep Apnea. I am a Resp. Therapist that deals with Sleep Apnea patients all the time. Some tissue in his upper airway is swollen-usually due to Food Allergies. This causes the tissues to become inflammed and large. When he sleeps, everything relaxes and blocks his upper airway, causing snoring and some lost sleep-not to mention the other health problems this can cause. I hope this helps. What kind of business are you in? I am studying to be a Naturapath-I am into healthy alternatives-medical, etc. Email me back ____@____.com Have a great day!

Quick Fix--Get those sofe earplugs. I put one in the ear that I don't sleep on, so I sleep on the other and can still hear the alarm clock, but the ear that faces him is deaf.
Better fix--Sleep study and see an ENT doctor. My hubby needs surgery but we are waiting for his slow season. Good luck!

M. I (and apparently alot of us) feel your pain. I have to say my hubby will not go to any doctors about it & we tried the breathe right strips & he will not use them. So I now sleep in a seperate room and have for 1 1/2 yrs, I have a 4 1/2 yr old that hasn't allowed me to sleep since the last 2 mos of pregnancy so between hubby & baby I felt that I hadn't slept in years & truly it was a good 3 yrs before I gave up and started sleeping on our extra bed. Watch for clues like not really remembering driving somewhere and if it happens enough sleep elsewhere, I did do some research on this happening and if memory serves it is almost like you are "sleeping" during these periods and driving can be one of the worst situations to be in so watch tv together have your alone time but sleep elsewhere for your safety as well as the kids!! IF you can get your hubby to the doctor good for you maybe if you sleep elsewhere for awhile he will go, didn't work for me but heck maybe it will for you.
Godd Luck!!

I know what you mean-I've been dealing with loud snoring for the past 16 years. We've tried breath strips, sprays and so far nothing works. I'm tired all the time. I try to move him to his side and make him go into another room. His weight gain could have something to do with it. Mine has gained alot of weight and it's gotten worse. I haven't thought of it.

Maybe a trip to the doctor could find a cure for it.

Just a funny side note to give you a laugh--I have heard people building new homes with double master suites, especially great for the snorers! haha I'd love to have one!

Good luck

If he sleeps on his back, and he gained any kind of weight, he'll snore. My husband did it constantly. Tell him to sleep reclined, it might help.

The Breathe Right strips could help temporarily. Carrying around even 10 extra pounds can cause snorring! THe long term goal would be for your husband to lose weight & be healthy. I run a safe, effective Natural Detox program that will get him back onto great health. Otherwise, I can do a Clinical Nutrition consult to determine what is the best nutrition for him for optimal health. In the meantime, have him sleep a little more propped up. If continues to gain weight, then he will develop sleep apnea where he could temporarily stop breathing while sleeping, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc..
PS. I'm giving a free Heart Healthy Seminar next week Thursday Feb 12th at 7pm at the Health Doctors, Ltd. ###-###-#### to register or if you want to make an appointment for your husband.
