I'm about to leave my teaching position to be a SAHM with an embroidery business. My husband's company's insurance is VERY expensive and I'd like to know of anyone who has decent private medical insurance. I need it for me and my two children. I'm currently with Blue-Cross Blue Shield through my school district paying $200 a month. I'm also curious to know if anyone knows how long it takes to get it started so I know when to change over.

My position has been eliminated and the out placement service gave me a website that offered list of insurance companies that offer private or individual insurance. The website is www.coverageforall.com. I hadn't check it out for myself as of yet but maybe it has some benefit for you. Good luck!

I just applied for a great Cigna plan (there's a $5000 deductible for hospital, etc. but I get doctor's visits and prescriptions with only a copay) for $164/mo. on eHealthInsurance.com.

Good luck!

Hi H.. I am self-employed and have myself and my son on Blue Cross Blue Shield (individual policy). Your premium will depend upon how high you want your deductible (ie $500, $1000, $1500, etc...). My deductible is $1500 and I pay $440/month. Keep in mind that is was much lower when I first started (I've been in business about 5 years), however BCBS goes up every renewal period.

I wish I could tell you that there is a great policy out there for self-employed people but I have yet to find one.

Can you get on your husband's policy through his work. That would be your best bet if it's not too pricey.

On another note...welcome to the world of the self-employed Mom's. I'm part of a networking/support group of women who are mothers and self-employed called the Network of Enterprising Women. Check us out at www.ntxnew.org and when you are up and running perhaps you can visit with us at a meeting.

Good luck on your new business!

Sincerely,

K.

I've been researching policies for 2 years and they are all expensive. Keep in mind that when you get an individual policy, they don't cover maternity, unless you pay a LOT extra (some of the policies it was almost twice the monthly premium to add maternity, with large deductibles). So if you're wanting to have more kids, that's something to think about. www.ehealthinsurance.com was a good resource, though, and I saw lower prices on that site compared to others. Even though your husband's insurance is more expensive, it might be better than an individual policy b/c of the deductible rates and what it covers, so do your research and compare the policies carefully to see which would be best overall in coverage, not just price.

Good evening,

H., My name is G. Bates. I am an Insurance broker here in the North Texas area and specialize in individual health plans. I know every policy there is within Texas, I consider myself an expert at what I do, which is to protect families against the lousy policies that are promoted as CATASTROPHIC plans in Texas today. If you really read the fine print of that policy you will see that it offers your family no protection against major illnesses like cancer, heart attack or stoke just to mention a few of it's holes where they don't pay. There are many articles out there today that say exactly what I am telling you to be true. Below I have pasted a link to the 4-6-09 CBS Morning News Show where Harry Smith and Consumer reports comments on the very things I have told you about above. If having a TRUE MAJOR MEDICAL plan that covers the BIG STUFF that none of us can afford then we should have a conversation. If you provide me with an email where I can send you attachments I am more than happy to email you several articals that validate what I am telling you. You can find me on mamasource as Covenant Health & Life.

when we had private insurance we were with unicare. it is very affordable but you get what you pay for. it wasn't the best insurance but it wasn't that bad either. I am pretty sure blue cross has a private insurance too. i would check that out. From my experience if you are willing to have a least a $2000 deductable it can be very affordable. good luck!

we have blue cross blue shield. my husband is self-employed & i stay home with our two little ones, so we're grateful to have qualified for an individual policy. it does cost more (a little over $300/mo) - and like i mentioned, each person has to qualify - but once approved, it is really an added sense of security to know we have it no matter what the job situation for me or my husband (as long as we pay the premiums).
HTH & congrats on your new venture!!

If you qualify for COBRA, go for it. It is normally fairly expensive, but due to the new stimulus plan, the govt will cover 65% of your COBRA payments for 9 months....making it affordable. This gives you breathing room to find the best individual policy. Good luck!

H.,

I am not sure what insurance to go with, but I do know that after you quit, COBRA comes into action. You have the option to continue on with your current insurance (for your previous cost, and the cost that the school district paid) for one year I think.

For sure, ask HR about this, but it is an option for you so you can still be insured.

Hi, H.. I wanted to respond to Linda K's post regarding the new stimulus plan and COBRA... 65% of your benefits will be paid for you only if you loose your job "due to involuntary termination of employment". If you quit your job, you will still be eligible for COBRA, however you will be responsible for all of the premiums. Here is a link to the Department of Labor's website if you need more information.

I went through the same thing. BCBS was who insured me and our son through our school district while I taught, but I did not stick with them after deciding to stay home. John Gooden was referred to me by a trusted relative. He was extremely patient and diligent. You can email him at ____@____.com. Congratulations on your transition from full-time workplace to full-time home!
