iPad App to Limit Overall Time Limit for Ipad?

Is there an iPad app that allows a parent to limit the overall use time for an ipad each day?
I am aware of Guided Access, but that is app-specific.
I am looking for something that literally shuts down the ipad or locks it with a special password after an hour (or whatever time I set).
Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the three answers.
This is for when the child is not with us, so a timer is not feasible.
I have googled this, but found nothing like an app that controls time used.
Guided Access is app-specific.
Thanks.

Thanks for the additional answers. I will look into unglue and qustodio.

I walk over and take it from my son if he's supposed to be off.
He's ten. He knows I'm the boss. I understand that an app might do something which would potentially eliminate an argument, but my son needs to be able to do what I ask him to without a meltdown, or no iPad privileges for a while.

If a child is too young to grasp that concept, then maybe too young for iPad time.
If the child is not with you, maybe no ipad and they can do other things? I've never left caregivers with potentially fraught situations.... and, as a former caregiver, I HATED when parents did that to me. Just something to think about. There are PLENTY of other things for a child to do!

You have something that can shut down electronics when the time you have allotted for their use is up. It's called your hand. Just take the damn thing away.

A young child should not be using an iPad with no adult supervision nearby. Whoever the responsible adult is nearby, at least if it is another relative, try asking that person to help enforce your rules about usage time.

I haven't gotten around to finishing the set up, but I think the app unGlue will allow you to turn off a device, even if the device is not with you. You can set limits for internet access. You have to install the app on your device and on the device your child uses.

We use Qustodio that has many features in addiction to time control. Just only for limit the time there is Dinner time too that is a good app free for one device. We tried different apps but many didn't work or it was very simple to unistall. Just remember you need to block the account setting too otherwise it's easy to remove the app.
I don't remember parental control apps that shut down the phone/tablet, they just block it after the time use you set or in the hours of the day you choose to don't let the phone/tablet to work. Usually the phone calls work also when the apps are blocked (for security reasons) but you can choose which numbers or block all the calls too.
If you will find something very good for free let me know, Qustodio is for a small fee. Thanks

Perhaps you could shut down the device from the account used to service the device. I know I can shut down the three phones on my plan and turn them back on at will. Perhaps this is an option.

Personally I would just take the device from the child in question when time is up.

I'm so not a techhy, but what about an old-fashioned hour timer that you will hear ding and your child can look at to monitor how much remaining time is left?

Off Remote will shut off any device remotely, but I don't think it is on a timer. You would have to decide "it's time" and go on your device to shut down the other device.

I know exactly what you are looking for, though. That program/app came free on my son's Samsung tablet. I set the amount of time, time of day, could set more on weekends, etc. and it shut him out when the time was up. It could also calculate small times of use together - so if he had 1 hr to use, he could use it in 15 minute chunks, no problem. It would also allow use (if you permitted) after so much rest time - so if he played for an hour in the morning, and set it down for 4 hrs, he could go back on for another hour later in the day.

If you really cannot find a good one for Ipad, maybe check out the Samsung kids tablet. I really liked the flexibility of this parental controls on it!

I remember looking for an app like that when I first bought an ipad. I never found one, so i had to focus on remember to limit the time myself. Having an app do it for me would have been really helpful when I was busy with the dishes or laundry or something and just not thinking about how long it had been. So I do understand your interest.

If the child is not with you, is he or she with a different adult? Maybe that adult would be willing to enforce your rules. If not, you might have to decide whether or not to let your child have the ipad during those visits.

Kidslox is an app that you put on your device, and download onto theirs.
You can set schedules, access levels based on age or time, and you can also completely shut down the device (won't let them into the home screen) all from your phone if you want.

Been a life saver for us.

My friend did this using parental controls I think (under settings maybe?) or something called guided access. I can't remember which she used on home MacBook and one on iPad but maybe try googling that.

How about you just take the device away when the time is up?
I get you don't want to be 'the bad guy' - it's much easier if the device shuts itself off - they can't do anything further with it and you don't have to physically do anything.
But it's kind of putting the cart before the horse.
When times up (a kitchen timer will do) - just take it away.

We have a program ON the device that can be set to lock the device except for certain times of the day, can set timers, and basically notify us when it's reached the limits so we know they need to bring it to be charged.
