Please forgive me for my lack of Apple knowledge. We recently got an iPad mini for my 7-yr old. One of the biggest reasons is for it to be an e-reader. He is allowed to bring it to school for reading time although we are not ready for that yet! Anyway, is there an App for reading, or do we simply download books through iTunes? Is there any kind of "library" option that we can check out books for a limited time without purchasing them all? Any ideas or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Bottom line, how does your child read on his iPad?
I use the (completely free) Kindle App to read.
Just google kindle app... And the iPhone/iPad version pops up.
But I Download books from various sources:
- Amazon
- iTunes
- Gutenberg.org (free books 70 years old or older)
You can download books from your local library. Go to their website and look. If you library does not then you can becomes member at another library that does. My mom does this. She says the books automatically vanish after a set period of time. Of course you can renew just like at the brick and mortar library.

You can download the kindle app and then books to read thru the app. And you can also just buy/download books thru iTunes. They will show up in the iBooks book rack on the home screen. iTunes gift cards become excellent choices for gifts for kids for this reason, when they have access to apple products. Of course, they can also be used for games and music and movies.... lol. But it works just the same for books. :)
There should be an iBooks app already on there. Just open it up and touch the store button at the top of the screen. There is also the kindle app as someone mentioned. You have to have an Amazon account. Go to their website to register the iPad after you download the app. It's really easy once you have it set up and amazon's customer service has always responded quickly to me. Barnes and noble has an app but I haven't used it in awhile. I've also heard that Scholastic sells ebooks - I keep meaning to look into it but haven't. I would search for an app since they specialize in kids books.
Ask at your library if they offer that service. Mine has recently started loaning ebooks. They stay on your device for two weeks.
Oh, and when you buy a book through Amazon, make sure you are buying the ebook, not the print version. The easiest way is to search the kindle store on their site.
Download the Kindle app as well as the iBooks app (if it's not already on there). You can purchase books through either app. There are also many free books available for both. Not the latest releases, but a lot of classics and some decent ones you've never heard of.
Talk to your local library to see if they offer ebooks to check out using your iPad. Mine does, but there are huge wait lists for the decent books so it doesn't end up being a practical solution.
Download the Kindle app. And if you have Amazon Prime, you can check books out to read.
Kindle, Nook, Readdle, Stanza (free), and eReader are my go to apps for books.
