Issues with My Daughter's Hair

Just recently my daughter had been having white flakes in her hair. She never had this problem before. I had taken her to a hair salon to get her hair cut (I was worried that maybe it was lice or dandruff etc.) but according to the stylist she thought it was from not rinsing out the shampoo well enough. I had even asked her about dandruff and she didn’t think that was the cause. Well I feel like we are doing a good job of rinsing out her hair but it hasn’t gone away. It seems to be coming from only the top of her scalp and not from the back. I plan on trying different shampoo but I was wondering if you could recommend something or at least let me know if you had this problem and what do you think it is? She doesn’t complain about her head itching. Any info / advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Actually, my husband had this problem! He switched shampoos and all fixed! It took us a few shampoos to find the right one. But switching took care of it.

I have this too. I have really thick hair. Try a more expensive shampoo brand and make sure she rinses well, then rinses again with lukewarm water right before she hops out of the shower. It's called a cold water rinse, but it needn't be COLD water. Just lukewarm seems to be enough for my hair. Good luck!

My daughter has thick hair and also has asthma. She had this problem also, and the doctor told us it is a form of eczema that many asthma patients get. She recommended a medicated shampoo, which we tried and didn't work. Went to the salon and they recommended tea tree oil shampoo. It works very well, is easy to rinse out, and smells wonderful.

Wash her hair occasionally for her, scrubbing really hard with your fingertips.

Same thing happened to me when I started using a new hair product, it sounds like it is remaining hair product. Try using a different shampoo/conditioner about every 5 hair washes, for me it seems like using a different shampoo sometimes will wash away the build up of the normal one.

Consider checking with your daughter's pediatrician. Our daughter has problems with dry itchy skin, exzema, and we often use Selson Blue or Head and Shoulders shampoo with conditioner to help her scalp. Our dr. told us to put it on at the start of bath, and leave it on for the duration of the bath, then rinse thoroughly at the end. It seems to help. We also have a prescription cream to apply if necessary, and together it helps our daughter. Good luck!

YESSS...I have lots of hair, too. Same thing. I use a salon quality shampoo (which does not mean it WON'T happen) The thing that I do is apply olive oil with a Q-tip and let it "marinate" overnight. Shower in the am...helps a ton.

I know this sounds weird, but try apple cider vinegar. I had the same problem and someone told me that. It worked. Put it on and leave it set for approx. 10 minutes than rinse and shampoo. Do this until white flakes and are gone and then ix a week after.

Have you thought about diet?

While I'm not a nutritionist, I know that skin is affected by diet. One thing that helped my skin immensely is adding fish oil supplements to my diet. It takes a while to build up in your system, but it solves the problem, not just cover it up.

If not fish oil, make sure your family is eating foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, which are present in grass-fed, free-range meats. It's healthier anyway. (incidentally, my husband's dandruff went away when I started buying free-range meats.) Take a look at http://www.cure-for.info/dandruff/

If you're already eating well, there's a possibility the dandruff is fungal (in this case, the flaked skin is sticky) My son had that for a spell--I cured it by putting an anti-fungal cream on the fungus spot. I used walgreen's version of foot fungus cream. Very cheap. Cleared up in a couple days.

My son get a build up of dead skin cells on the top of his head sometimes and causes the flakes. I shampoo his hair and while the shampoo is in I use a comb and lightly scrub his scalp. He never complains about it.
