Just for Fun - Tattoo Question

My son's friend got a tattoo the other day and it got me thinking - do guys still get tattoos of "MOM" any more? And was it usually just Navy guys? Or any branch of service men? And does anyone get a "DAD" tattoo?

I've always wanted a tattoo but am afraid of the pain - yep, this coming from someone that went totally natural when giving birth to my two children!! Go figure!!

So, who has a tattoo? What would be a cute one? I'm thinking of having my son design something. What spot would be the least painful?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! These have been fun to read. If I ever do work up the nerve, I'll probably just get something small on my shoulder blade - a butterfly has always been something I've wanted - and it sounds like it would be a relatively low-pain spot!! lol!!

Thanks again!!

I have a mom and dad tattoo:) for my son i have a heart but the top looks like 2 people, supposed to be a mother and child along with his name. My daughter I have her footprint, both on my forearms. I also have a half sleeve of flowers, 4 natical stars around my calf, my wedding band, a dragon on one foot, and a sugar skull on the other foot. I am working on my other sleeve which is just a mix of different stuff. As for the pain I never found it to be to bad. I sat for 10hrs for my sleeve.

I have 4.

1 - lower back
2 on my left wrist
1 - top of my right foot

The low back hurt the least. But hon, if you've been through natural childbirth...a tattoo is NOTHING. Seriously.

If you get something about your kids, you won't regret it. I have both of mine's initials with on my left wrist with a tribal design around it. It's my favorite, and I get tons of compliments on it.

Beware, they're addictive!

I have four. The first one I got was a rose on the back of my neck. The guy who did this one warned me that it would hurt a lot. I didn't feel it that much. Second one was a monkey on the left side of my chest. This one hurt, but it was the skill (or lack thereof) of the artist. I went back and had some more added by the guy that did my first one and that didn't hurt. Third was a butterfly on my lower back. The last one I got was a star design on my inner wrist. There were areas, especially closer to the hand, that hurt, but it wasn't too bad. No worse than a shot.

Generally, the fleshier the area, the less it will hurt, but the skill of the artist plays a huge part. Everyone has a different definition of cute, so make sure it's something you like. If you can't find anything, you can always have a tattoo artist design something for you.

I have 2 tattoos. I have sunflowers on my ankle, & a butterfly, celtic design on my back. Between my shoulder blades, not a tramp stamp. The one on my back hurt like hell! The other one I barely felt.

Have one.
Me and my college friends, before graduation, got one. It was of a specific "symbol", which helped us power through our last tough year of school. Its small nothing huge and not in an openly visible place. I like it.

The pain... was not so bad. Tolerable.

I have 4:
My first was a butterfly with an ankh in place of the body and antenna. I choose the butterfly, printed out a pic and sketched the ankh. Brought that to the tattoo artist. It's on my lower back and didn't hurt much. For me, it symbolizes a new life-I had just graduated from college and was entering the "real world".
My second is a sea turtle that covers the top of my foot. I brought some pictures of turtles to the artist to give him an idea of what I liked and he went from there. He even freehanded some flowers and water as he went. The only part that I was specific about was an infinity symbol in the center of the turtles shell with an M for me and a J for my hubby. I got it right after our honeymoon. It hurt a LOT, more the following days when the top of my foot had swollen and stretched with every step I took.
Number 3 and 4 represent my kids and are my inner wrists. I have a flute playing fairy for my daughter-her name means "pipe-playing elf". The artist sketched after seeing a few pictures examples I brought in. My son's is a Superman symbol with a C instead of the S. We named him loosly after Superman's real name (Caleb L.=Kal-el). I sketched the C over a picture I printed out and the artist followed that exactly. They hurt, but not bad after the first day.
Tattoos are permanent and should have some meaning to you. It has to be something you will want to look at forever and you'll still be happy with when you're 80 and your body is different. Start thinking of things that are important to you or represent your son in your mind/heart. Think about how visible you want it. It will hurt no matter what, but it should. Anything that permanently alters your body should be earned with some pain. Just make sure it is something you will be happy with forever.

Through the years there have been many things I have thought to get, but haven't because the "permanence" scares me
1 - wings on my feet
2 - chinese symbol for dance on my feet....I used to be a dancer so something on my feet or to do with dance was the idea behind these first two...
3 - my latest is a palm tree (LOVE palm trees) with coconuts that have initials for my hubby and son - like a "family tree". Probably wouldn't get this one until after we were done having kids.
4 - in college, one of my friends was in the army and received a letter of deployment. We were cheerleaders together and the whole squad (small squad - 6 girls) said we were going to go get tattoos for her. But, now looking back, I am glad we didn't because I really don't talk to those girls any more!

Again, I like the idea of on my foot, but hear it hurts. But I can't imagine it would hurt worse than natural childbirth!! :-)

I don't know if I would ever get a tattoo, but if I were, number 3 would probably be it...

i don't know anyone who has a "mom" or "dad" tattoo - i know LOTS of moms who have their children. hmm. maybe that's an indication on the turn this society has taken...lol. that's a whole other discussion....

anyway, i have my son's name, and i have one that represents my siblings and my mom - so i guess i kinda do have a "mom" tattoo - but it doesn't say that lol.

one is on my hip, the other on my shoulder blade. i can't really answer which was more painful - the first i got on my hip, before i had a child, young n' dumb and all that - he did it for free, after hours, so he was kind of taking his time, doing lots of shading and having fun with it - he stopped after an hour because the tears just started gushing down my face lol. i wasn't even "crying" really - i held it all in and did great - but my body was just "done" lol. WUSS!! :P

my S. one, i got on my shoulder blade, and i was a trooper ;) BUT it was only lettering with some stars around it, with very little color. and it only took about 45 minutes. so there ya go :)

i think the point is that if it is meaningful enough to you, then you do it. it's worth the pain. i can't stand the stupid tattoos that mean nothing - and i won't get another one unless i have another child.

I have 4, have always thought I would get more but no inspiration has struck as of now. My fiance and father of my child has 5 two have been linked together so technically 4 including one in tribute of our son. His are a bit larger than mine and he is designing and working on one that will bridge almost all of them together.

My nephew has a "Mom" tattoo, not your standard "heart" one, so yes people still get them. He got it for "her" for her Mother's Day gift last year (he turned 18).

As for locations, stay away from major veins/nervous locations so the spine, low back not included unless you are a skeleton with skin, neck, wrist, ankle, foot are all bad ideas if you are looking for no pain.

I my first was on my butt cheek, then on my breast above my heart, my low back, then the last was on my back under my shoulder blade.

I have a sunflower on my back, my Chinese sign and the symbol for Leo on my shoulder blade, a crown on my left foot and the word "mine" on my right foot (it's a combination of my girls' nicknames). The foot hurts bad, should blade didn't hurt at all, lower back hurt especially on the spine. Fatty areas hurt the least. I want many more! I like words, sayings.

I have two tattoos, that I drew. They are not in noticeable areas (unless I'm in a swimsuit.)I received compliments on both. I'd really like to get them bith removed. Now, I kind of caution people wanting them. Mine have significant meaning, and the tattoo artist was amazing. Super high quality. I'm just...I'm over them now and they are permanent. Sigh.

Honestly, I really don't get the pain thing. I didn't think it hurt AT ALL. Both of mine are supposed to be in places that hurt really badly. I found the sensation annoying, but not painful.

I have a butterfly with wings of flame on my right calf. It's my totem - a butterfly/phoenix hybrid. It didn't hurt at all - tingled kind of like when your foot falls asleep but no real pain.

I'm a big cry baby so I've never had the guts to get one. :) But I'd love to get one. Maybe a purple B. on my shoulder. I think they're beautiful. I'm probably too old now to even think about getting one. So maybe I'll find a temporary purple B. tatoo I can put on. lol

Ok. I have 5. No parent references. I just recently got a tiny four leaf clover on my wrist in honor of my dad who died. Ok it hurt so bad that I cried lol! In fact for me, it is the most painful thing ever!!! But I love my tattoos so much it was worth it! I also have a yin/yank symbol on my wrist with my children's initials where the little dots would be. I cried on that one to but it means so much to me to have them on me. Definetly get something honoring your kids you can never regret that! Good luck!
