We will be kind of passing by Lake Tahoe this summer on our way to Yosemite/San Francisco and want to RV there for a least one day. From those of you who know the area - which do you prefer (North or South) and why??? We like to hike and swim. Kids will be 10 and almost 8 at the time. We drive a 30ft long RV if that matters. Looking for the more natural stuff, not city/party stuff. We might also be checking into renting a boat too, so any recommendations on that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks so much!!!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the info so far. I know it's more like a one week trip - that's why it's so hard to choose where to go on our 1 (maybe 2) day pass thru. We only have a certain amount of time off work for this vacation (3wks) and we are mostly driving out to see San Francisco and Yosemite/Sequioa. But we are driving SO close to Lake Tahoe we just have to stop for at least one day!!!! This will be about a 5,000 mile round trip - so I have a LOT of planning and research to do!!!

I live an hour from there. I would go to North Lake-maybe try Sand Harbor. Beautiful beach and not as big of a party spot as Zephyr Cove on the south side.

We love Tahoe.
We go to South Shore & it has lots of things for the family to do.
You can hike nearby. The kids can swim at Camp Richardson (though
the water can always be chilly).
Right there the kids can rent canoes, bikes & there's a great ice cream place across the street.
We love it.
Shopping is not far into town (approx 15 mins) & a few family friendly
places to eat (a pizza place there on the strip is one of our favorites).
Enjoy & have fun!

We LOVE Tahoe and have been going there regularly for years! Mostly in winter as my husband loves to ski but also several summer trips :)
The entire lake is beautiful, and there are plenty of great spots on both shores, but we prefer the North, less traffic, more rustic, only a few casinos.
With kids you may enjoy staying in Truckee, which is about 10 or so miles from the north shore. Incline Village is also nice, as is Tahoe City (go to Rosie's Cafe!)
One fun thing we have done during the summer is to go to one of the ski resorts (we do either Northstar or Squaw Valley.) You can ride up on the ski lift and hike down the mountain on the ski runs, incredible views and a really fun experience. The lift ticket at Squaw also includes use of their mountain top pool which is REALLY cool.
Have fun!!!

I can talk to my parents and nephew....there is a LOT to see - it's not a one day affair...my dad says 1 week with all there is to do!

I can't think of a bad place at Lake Tahoe - I think the whole area is absolutely beautiful!!

My parents have a 40ft motor home with 3 pullouts. do the kids know about taking showers in a motor home?! :) And in choosing RV parks - size and electricity matters! You need to know if the motor home has 30 or 50 amps - if it the amps aren't right - water heater, a/c etc. won't work.

My mom lives in Reno & works to promote Reno/ Sparks/ Tahoe area. Check out these websites. www.visitrenotahoe.com or www.gotahoenorth.com She also suggests the North Shore- as there are fewer casinos. Have a great trip! Hope the summer weather is good for you- there just wasn't any snow at Christmas for skiing!? =o(
