My son (12 y/o now) had apraxia (language delay due to motor skills). He didn't babble at all and rarely made sounds as a baby. He didn't say his first words until after 2 and they were few and monosyllables. I got him into speech therapy by 3. That was in Canada, where we're from, but here in NY with our 3rd child, we're in the process of dealing with EI with physical therapy. So far I've found them to be pretty fast. We've only been through the evaluation process so far, but our daughter has been approved for the service and will be seeing a therapist soon. From what I understand I've had no choice about the agency. I called the number, was referred to the Bronx office (where we live) and then people started coming! From what I understand, our case will be given to a therapist and they come to the house to begin the service. Also, they do the evaluation and decide if your child is elegible. If they decide that he's not, then you will probably have to find therepy privately. I would urge you to follow-up on the speech tho. The earlier he gets help the better. I wished I had my son start a little earlier, but i had so many people kindly telling me that "he'll start talking when he's ready"! Not so. He still has issues with his speech and we all have to ask him to repeat himself often. It doesn't help that he speaks quickly and there's a history of stuttering in his family!
