Lonely 1St Time Mom Looking for a Group in Fort Lauderdale

I'm a new mom (34 y/o) to a 4 month old and was interested in finding out where I can go to find a group in my area (Ft. Lauderdale). I'm feeling a bit isolated as all my friends are all single. I kinda feel like I've been banshed to my own private island. I never realized I could feel so alone. Thanks so much for you time.

What can I do next?

I think you should join a mommy and me like Amanda's Place. They have a class for 0-7 month olds, where moms get a chance to meet and chat, and play with baby.
Check out the Dania Beach site - www.geocities.com/amandasplacedania
Or the Pompano site - www.amandasplace.org
Both have a new session starting in a couple of weeks.
Good luck!

Hello-
I am also a first time mom with a major lifestyle change. I am 32 and have a 18 week old little girl. I have been home up until last week and started to work full time again. I was getting very lonely and a bit stir crazy. All of my friends are either single or working during the day, so I felt this was a good time to start back to work. I am miserable. I miss being home with her. I am also looking for some kind of group like a mommy and me or something. My time is more limited now with work but really I want some interaction for my baby as well as myself. I don't see working as a permanent arrangement, just giving it a shot to see how it goes with a nanny.

I'm a first time mom with a four month old also - my daughter was born on 3/20. I stay pretty busy because I work almost full time (about 30 - 40 hours a week) and run a small business on the side. I am also married. I don't have the same feelings as you (in terms of feeling banished), but my husband and I were interested in meeting people w/ similar age babies to potentially trade babysitting favors in the future (I'm a bit wary of everyone right now - even my MIL!). I feel like we never get to do anything together! Anyway, I don't know about a group but if you find that meets on weekends I would be interested also. Otherwise, if you just want to get together w/ another mom w/ a similar age baby let me know. I've realized that once you have a baby, you can just spend all day talking to other mom's about them. Let me know and good luck - everyone tells me it does get easier.

I would recommend going to meetup.com and searching for parent groups on there. It depends on your parenting style but I know there is an attachment parenting group that meets weekly in Fort Lauderdale. I am sure there are others too.

If you are interested in learning to do baby sign language. I am a certified instructor. I plan to host parent and me sign and play classes. The classes will probably start in Sept but be ongoing for babies 6 months and up.

Nova has an incredible program depending on where you are and the first one for new babies is free I think. Also check out downtownjewish.com for a jewish mommy and me group. Whole Foods on Federal Highway also has a group meeting. Stroller Striders (http://www.strollerstriders.com/) has a few meetings around town. Also there is a place in wilton manors, the name escapes me. Also, http://broward-babywearing.com/ if you have any interest in baby wearing.

Hi T.! Sound like the other ladies posted some great outlets for you. I know about all of them and they are great. I also know you can look into a mom's club in your area. I belong to the mom's club of Pembroke Pines South/Miramar group and I know there is a group in Ft. Lauderdale. Check out this website, www.momsclub.org for more information. I love my group, I've been in the club for about 6 years now and I've met some wonderful moms and children. I was even on the board, first as membership VP and then the next year became president of the club! Ha,Ha. This year I decided to take a break from the board and now we have a new president. My kids are older now, 6 and 3, going on 4 so I'm going to volunteer for other things, etc. I hope this helps!

Totally agree! And while you're looking up groups on meetup.com, you can look for the Hollywood Moms and the Fort Lauderdale Attachment Parenting groups. Both are in your area and both have very nice moms who belong to them.

T.,

Hi my name is E. Weiss. I saw your post and remembered back when I was looking for a mommy outlet. I remember the isolation I felt. I soon found Stroller Strides. It changed my life as a mother. I met so many moms in the same boat "island" as me. The basis is actually a work out program for moms and there babies, but it is really soooo much more than that. There are mommy and me playgroups each week, moms night out and other fun and exciting things scheduled to do with other moms. The workouts are geared to all levels of fitness. All of the moms are amazing. I can't say enough about this program. It is truly the answer for stay at home moms who feel like you and I. I highly recommend you give it a try. I know you will LOVE it. Kathy O'Donnel is the owner. There are several locations. Strollerstrides.net/weston

Sincerely,

E. Weiss
