I am looking for a good preschool in my area that would accomadate my 4 yaer old. He is a bit sheltered and hasn't been around a lot of kids. He is very attached to his parents. He is a smart kid but needs a little guidance in the learning area. He has a V-Tech game that has taught him a lot of his basics. he also is a bit spoiled. But not terribly. I have a horrible work schedule for a parent trying to put their child in school (10 a.m.-6:30p.m.). I don't have the money to put him in a montessori school like I would like to and he is not old enough for a charter school. Help!!!

What can I do next?

I have copied an e-mail from Parents As Teachers which you will find after my message. This preschool would be free and the Reggio Emilia curriculum is supposed to be fantastic. People pay A LOT of money to have their child in preschools using the Reggio Emilia curriculum. You should also look into Head Start which is a preschool program for low income families. You can start by contacting Manchester Head Start. There may be one closer to you. That is the most publicly visible Head Start Program that I see around the city and my neighborhood. I live in Shaw which is south city but closer to midtown. My last suggestion would be Cornerstone Center for Early Childhood. They are in my neighborhood and close to bus routes (I don't know if this is a concern for you). They have a sliding scale and would be able to accomodate your work schedule. For your child's age there usually isn't a wait list. Good luck!

My son went to preschool at Hope Lutheran School, which is on Brannon in the Southampton neighborhood. The teacher, Mrs. Akers, is fantastic and he learned a lot from her and the aid. I believe they offer financial aid, but you'd probably want to contact Mrs. Dikeman, the prinicipal, pretty soon about that since school's starting in a couple weeks. Preschool was 8-11 and then we sent him to a sitter afterwords. The school has a list of babysitters they can give you that live nearby.
Their website is www.hopelutheranstl.org
Click on the "school" tab.

Another option: my son goes to daycare in the summer at Southwest Baptist Church, which is off Watson, I believe on Smiley. They've had a big daycare there for 30 years and they also do preschool during the year. Their rates are affordable. The number is ###-###-####.
Good luck!

I am also a young mom that can't afford private schools. My husand and I both attended private schools so we were wary of putting our child in public school, but financially we had no choice. We applied to the Magnet School System. She attended all-day preschool at Mullanphy ILC by the Botanical Garden. We have been so impressed with her teachers and how much she has grown in her education. She is in the gifted programs and has won math awards.

You do have to apply for the lottery in Feb., i believe, so you might not be able to get your son in a Magnet School this school year (but ask. maybe there are open spots that they will fill), but you can prepare to apply for next year. They have two open houses each year. Not all of the schools have preschool. Some do offer before and after-day care. We have used Neighborhood Houses for after-school and have been happy with them (it's only $10 a week). here is a link to Magnet School info http://www.slps.org/magnet/index.htm

I am not sure if this would work, but Gymboree Play and Music in Webster Groves has a preschool program for 3-5 y/o...I take my daughter on Tuesdays from11:15-1:15 but they do have a class from 7-8 on Wednesday evenings...I would check it out on the web if it sounds like something you might want to get to know more about...www.gymboreeclasses.com
