Looking for a over the Counter Help for Toe Nail Fungus.

Yes ladies, I have toe nail fungus on my pinky toe only. My foot doctor says I probably got it from a nail salon, and advised me to stay away from them since this is very contagious. And it will probably spread to my other toe nails. He also said there is nothing that can be done, except shave it down from time to time. This can't be right. Please help, has anybody had luck getting rid of toe nail fungus?

Sounds crazy but my doctor swears by covering it with vicks vapor rub and putting on a sock. Do this several times through out the day and it should clear up.

My grandson had toenail fungus on his big toe. Everything was tried as per over the counter remedies. He went to the foot doctor and he said the only way to get rid of it for good was to remove the toenail. So with novacaine into toe he removed the toenail. There was pain for the first night but kept it elevated. He is now free of fungus for a long time

I have read that soaking your nail in tea tree oil a couple times a day helps. You can find it at your local health food store. It smells pungeant for a short time, but it is great for a lot of different things. While at the health food store, see if they have a copy of Prescription for Nutritional Healing. If they do, look up fungus and see what else it has to say. Good luck!

Hi D.,

I had the same problem on both feet and underneath too. My feet itched like crazy and my toe nails were yellow and thick, they were disgusting! I went to a podiatrist and he said that this type of thing has to be treated from the inside out. He prescribed the Lamisil tablets. I was terrified to take them because of possible liver issue, but you can have the same side affects with chloesterol and other medications. So I decided to go for it. I didn't have any liver/blood issues and it solved the problem. This was many years ago, so I don't remember how long it actually took to get rid of the problem . . . but the tablets did work. And if I remember correctly . . . I thought I saw some Lamisil cream and stuff that recently came out over the counter, I could be wrong, but I would call a pharmacy and see if they sell Lamisil over the counter . . . otherwise, go ahead and try the tablets . .. it worked for me. :)

I heard Listerine works, not the green or blue one but the yellow one. Soak your toenail it that for like 2-3 mins. Just a home remedy. Good Luck!

Hey D.,
I have a suggestion..not positive if it will work but I think it is worth a shot.. Try soaking your foot in betadine mixed with some water. I have tried it for athletes feet which is also a fungus and it worked and also I used to use it on my horses when they got rain rot which again is a fungus..Its cheap and it cant hurt you:0) Good Luck!!

Long ago my brother the foot doctor gave my Mom a script for a medication which cured her fungus toe nail. Sorry can't call them to ask what the medication was as I lost them both in 1981....so I'm suggesting you go to another doctor as there is definitely a cure for this. Shaving it wont cure it, nor will it keep it from spreading...everythings a foot doctor!!

Also I read somewhere that applying vicks vapor rub over night on the nail bed for some time will cure nail fungus. I think it's worth a try.

This is probably an old wives tale but i heard that vicks vapor rub on the toenails at night time prevents the fungus from thriving. I have heard this from several different people and never tried it myself but it sounds pretty harmless. Give it a go!! Also do not use fungi nail unless you want to lose the whole nail. This i do have experience with. Not a pretty sight!! Good luck

Worth a try:

[A reader offered the following suggestion for getting rid of nail fungus: “I cured my toenail fungus using a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and Listerine. I combined them in a quart jar with a screw-on lid and used a clean paintbrush to apply the liquid to the affected toes morning and night. “Then I put my socks on to keep it acting a while longer and protect the bed sheets at night. The fungus took about three months to clear up. It is slow growing, but is also slow to cure. I hope this helps someone else.? The herbal ingredients in Listerine may have anti-fungal properties, but home remedies rarely come with specific guidelines. This reader combined a couple of favorite remedies. Many people have reported success soaking infected nails in one part vinegar to two parts water. Others got good results soaking their toes in Listerine. Such remedies won’t work for everyone and take several months to produce results.]http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2005/11/16/listerine-for-t/

Hi D.,

Unfortunately, I suffer from toe nail fungus too. And on more than one toe :( I recently visited a podiatrist and he told me there is a topical liquid called Penlac that you can brush on the infected toe but that it could take up to a year to see results! The only other option are the Lamisil tablets which you take for 3 months and then can expect to see results about 9 months later. You have to first have a blood test before taking these pills because it can affect your liver. They have just announced laser treatments for toenail fungus but it is not covered by insurance and will cost you about $1,000!

I am still debating on what to do cause I can't stand the way my feet look but I really don't want to take pills.

I would visit a podiatrist to get his/her suggestion.

Good luck.
