Last year we adopted a rescue dog. We are looking for a good, inexpensive vet in the Mount Prospect area for routine annual care. We also have 2 cats.
Has anyone used Petco for annual shots? What did you think of the experience?

What can I do next?

Hi C.
Yes, I have used Petco for shots for my animals.
I used the one in Northbrook, and they were great for awhile.
Then the vet we like there left because she because there were issues with that actual branch.
She warned us she was leaving and was going to the Skokie branch. She also said that she was expecting that issues with the Northbrook Petco would continue, and she was right. They went downhill, everyone we liked there left, they offered us a refund for the annual. membership we purchased, based on the fact that the vet left.
And then they closed down.
It really depends on the vets. We don't like to go overboard with out vet care, and just want the basics, but our pets had emergencies, and we ended up taking them to the ER vet. So as long as you have a Vet hospital nearby for that, and understand that Petco is not where to you take them for that type of care, then I could totally recommend Petco for your basics.
Petco has 2 types of services.
1. you sign up for a annual membership and pay monthly. This gives you a discount on all your pet care, shot are free, and you get the cheapest price on heartworm and flea treatment. (they will price match with online prices, you just have to ask).
2. you take your pet in on a certain day of the week that the store offers, they will offer shots without the memberships. I am unsure if this is by appt. or waiting in line. There is no discount for this. But this is cheaper than a regular vet. No $300 bill.
Hope this helps!
K.

When we lived in Mt. Prospect, we went to Arlington Heights Animal Hospital on Algonquin and Arlington Heights road. I really liked the doctors there and felt they did a great job meeting our needs and answering our questions.

For years we have used Aberdeen Animal Hospital on Golf Road in Des Plaines, ###-###-####. Our three dogs are seen by two different vets there and we couldn't be happier. They're clean, efficient, and professional. We always get our questions answered and feel that they are fair in their pricing and suggestions for care. I recommend them highly!

I have had rescue animals for many years and also looked in-depth into vet care.

First, I would never take my animals to a chain place like PetCo for any kind of vet care. I'm sure that's fine in some cases, but you will never been getting anywhere near top care or people up on the latest and greatest information.

Second, I go to a holostic medicine vet in Barrington that is TERRIFIC with caring for animals. She also runs Fur Keeps Animal Rescue. I have a couple of cats from her and she has taken EXCELLENT care of my dogs as well. In fact, one of my dogs is 15 and is in good shape (for his age). When I first started taking him to her, he was about 9 or 10 and had liver damage. Now his liver is fine and he is still happy to be a part of the family. Her clinic name is Ventur-On Clinic (it's a farm clinic atmosphere), her name is Dr. Deb Rykoff and her number is ###-###-####.

I would never, ever take my pet to a pet store veterinarian -- even if I were looking to save a little money. You get what you pay for. Low-cost care equals low-quality care. The vets who take jobs at places like that most likely had no other options for jobs. The pet stores don't take good care of their vets (salary, benefits, etc., so they tend to leave after a short while). So you won't be able to establish a relationship. I would ask for recommendations from friends and neighbors for a good vet clinic in your area. I'm familiar with veterinary practices in the Schaumburg/Elgin area, otherwise I would suggest one for you. Good for you taking in a rescue dog! I wish more people would do that instead of buying from pet stores.

There is a woman in Elmhurst that owns a business called Kritter Kare. She has worked in the veternarian world for numerous organizations for over 10 years, assisting in surgeries, running large vet offices of 30 employees, and administering meds and other services. She is extremely well qualified and knowledgeable and could probably tell you what to look for in a vet. She started this company recently and offers services from dog walking and shuttle services to and from the vet and grommer, to administering prescriptions and mini exams. She is available to be on the appt with you and the vet to make sure the right questions are being asked and in some cases "challenging the vet" on treatments. She would be a great person to talk to about finding the right vet and would probably be willing to assist you. Her name is Rosie Folks. She is very passionate about her busines. Feel free to call her and let her know that I sent you. Her number is ###-###-####; email is ____@____.com
Good luck! C. Bajkowski

When we had our dog, we went to Central Animal Hospital (NW Hwy & Central). They were great for us, and compassionate when we had to put our dog down.

I agree with the others who wouldn't use a PetCo type of vet service.
