My son is 21 months and I'm still breast-feeding. I want to start weaning him, but he's allergic to dairy, almond, soy, rice, corn, peanuts, etc.. What other liquids can I give him besides watered down juice (which upsets his stomach) and water. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Papaya juice watered down will settle a stomach from gas so it might work for you too. I used about an ounce to three ounces of water and this helped my son with his upset stomach because the formula did not agree with him.

Hi A.,
I also was allergic to those things when I was younger and unfortunately, I had to drink goat's milk. See if that will help. No other suggestions. Sorry

Rice milk is available at all grocery stores now. Easily digestable and most are not allergic.

Hi A.,
I'm a nutritionist and have an 11 month old with cow dairy intolerance. Raw goat milk has worked really well for us when I'm not able to breastfeed, and so has coconut milk. Goat milk proteins and fats are much smaller than cow dairy, and most similar to breast milk. Thus, it's easier for babies to digest.

Is goat milk an option for your son? The raw version of any milk is even better tolerated and more nutritious than ultra-pasteurized which has killed off all the enzymes. My Whole Foods market carries raw goat milk, and I personally buy my goat milk from a farm in Pennsylvania who ship it to me in glass bottles. They keep 2-3 weeks and freeze quite well.

You can read more about goat milk and how it compares to cow milk and other FAQs here:

Since you son has so many allergies, I do agree with the comments posted by Mimi. Look into environmental allergens and triggers which may be further aggravating his food allergies. Also, food sensitives in infants tend to come and go.

Research on kids with sensitivities show that by strengthening their gut (by breastfeeding, giving healthy foods, probiotics, omega 3s, coconut oil), their gut becomes stronger, more mature, and less "leaky", and over time, they are better able to tolerate their allergic foods. So, you may want to re-introduce a little of one allergic food every couple months to see if he is able to handle it.

By the way, great job on continuing to breastfeed your son!

First of all, what foods does he eat? At 21 months old I would assume, and HOPE, that he is eating all solid table foods. With the allergies you mentioned, fruit juice is most likely his best bet. However, diluting it will only prolong his sensitivity. What does your pediatrician say? He/she must have some suggestions, most likely Pedialite!

I wish you luck. As a mom and now grandma, I am always concerned when I hear of little people having such awful allergies. I guess that's why I so strongly urge getting them on "real food" as early as possible to avoid developing some of these allergies.

I used to give my son mild teas. you could try water warmed with a bit of molasses in it. How about fresh vegetable juice. Juicers are expensive, but worth it in your situation, I think. Have you tried goat's milk. If he is allergic to dairy, I am assuming he will be allergic to this as well, but.....

Hope you can figure something out.

If you have any friends in the military stationed in germany, ask them to send you some "Kinder tea." This is wonderful and has many health benefits. It is good also warm or cold. When a child has a fever it is good for that also. The german people use this as a steady part of their children's diet. I gave it to my children when I was stationed in germany and I actually used less formula over time and it was a tremendous help while weening.
Also, kids love the taste of Kindertea and my children drank it in their teens also. Try the ethnic aisles in the stores or the health food stores. You may be able to access it somewhere on the net, but you would be very happy and so would your child if you could get some.

Try a watered down herbal tea, like Sleepytime from Celestial Seasonings. Alveta's elderberry tea is delicious too.
Also you can make homemade seedmilks in a blender, then strain the pulp out. Try sunflower and/or sesame seeds with water, vanilla and cinnamon.

I would say try some coconut milk (juice), gatorade, V-8 low sodium (can be mixed with juice). You can also flavor his water.

A., My "baby" is now 34, so this is old advice. I used to give my son a lot of apple juice instead of water. Well, at age 3 he had 10 cavaties! If I had to do it over again I would definitely push water. It's refreshing, cheap, healthy, no calories, and does not cause decay. Also, stay away from raisins as a snack. The dentist told me that is one of the worst things to give a young child since the sugar sticks to their teeth.
It's wonderful that you're breast feeding since there's a problem with allergies.
Enjoy your little boy, they grow up so quickly!

My son has similar allergies. I have taken him to both the allergist and gastroentorologist. Pretty much the only thing that you can give them other than some form of milk is called ELECARE. It is an aminoacid based formula and is pretty expensive. It is COMPLETELY hypoallergenic. It comes in a vanilla flavor but would have to be mixed with breastmilk until your son gradually adjusted to the new flavor. The good news is that even though it is expensive it is not his only form of nutrition so you don't have to give it 6 times a day. It also contains all the vital nutrients (proteins, fats, carbs, etc) and vitamins and minerals they need. If you want more info about this stuff just let me know. My son used it for a while but luckily we have been able to switch over to soy milk.

Congrats on your dedication to breast feeding. I never went that long with either of my boys, but seeing as how your son cannot have dairy, I would continue to breast feed him until age two if you possibly can. Have you tried pumping and storing your milk so that you can wean him but continue to give him breast milk? Breast milk has the fat content he needs for proper brain development, as does whole fat cow's/goat's milk, which he won't get from juice or most other liquids. Otherwise, just make sure he gets plenty of "good" fats from other sources.

Hi A.,
Whole Foods sells Oat milk which is fairly good. Hemp milk may also be a good option since it has the great fatty acids and it's made from seeds, not nuts.
Good luck,

Hi A.,

Avocado/coconut milk is a healthy alternative as well as the teas that were mentioned. It is quite unusual for a breast fed baby to be allergic to so many things. Have you looked into detoxing not only the house but his little body to build his immune system? I have seen wonderful results with allergies going away when the body starts working properly.

I speak to groups on nutrition and the effects of environmental toxins and how they affect us and our families. I'd be glad to give you more information if you're interested.

God bless!

Would goat's milk work? I'm not a nutritionist, so I don't know the details, but I know that goat's milk doesn't have some of the things in it that cow's milk does so allergies aren't usually as much of a problem. You'd probably want to check with your doctor or nutritionist first...

Increasing friendly bacteria growth in his colon will help his overall health. If he has develop allergy to the above mentioned foods, that means you, as a breastfeeding mom, can not consume it either.

Alkalinity is very important. You can try natural, fresh organic papaya juice. The papain (an enzyme)help digestion, decrease stomach acidity and nourishes. Also a product called Optiflora System provides friendly bacteria to his colon. Is safe for babies, effective and easy to use. You can get it through my website shaklee.net/salut.
