Hi. My husband and I want to have hardwood floors installed in our house. We are looking for recommendations on what type of flooring would be good (we have two young children and a small dog) and which company to use. Any advice would be great.

Hi M., I have the laminate hardwood flooring (pine color) with 1 toddler and 2 large dogs....the floor is great!! My only suggestion is to buy a good laminate floor (don't go cheap) and have someone install that knows what they are doing! It doesn't show the dirt and fairly easy to clean. I use the floor guys hardwood cleaner that is made for laminate flooring and I use a vacuum that is made for hardwood flooring (I had to use a broom b/c of the dog hair).

We have hardwood floors, and love them. The company we used to have them installed and existing floors refinished was Tadas Wood Flooring ###-###-####. He is a small company, and very personalized to your needs.

We have hard wood on entire 1st floor with 4 kids and love it. We used "A Surewood Flooring" out of Carol Stream (private owned company). They did a great job, and have an eye (and work ethic) for detail. Just recently we added hardwood on the 2nd floor hallway, and the stairs. They did a beautiful job, and we have received many compliments on it.

Not sure who to recommend for installing flooring...but as far as the flooring itself, i've heard nothing but great things about the new bamboo wood floors! I hear they are very durable, cost effective, ande Eco-friendly as well! The house we live in had wood floors when we moved in, but if i had to do it all over again, i'd do the bamboo! I have 4 kids and 1 big dog. :) I'm a fan of HGTV, and i've seen several home improvement shows where the homeowners have opted for bamboo floors because of all the qualitites i listed above. Take some time, and look up the benefits of bamboo for yourself. Just do a google search. Maybe even HGTV.com has info on them! Good luck!

This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't put in real wood floors. They scratch up easily, especially with a dog and kids, and if you have a throw rug in front of a door that gets sunlight on it, it discolors the floor.

I love pergo! It doesn't scratch up and it's sooooo easy to clean. You just use water. It looks clean, no matter what and nothing discolors it.

I think that "Home Depot" or "Lowes" are pretty competitive with their prices too.

Hi, I would NOT recommed Empire. We went with them and now we have a problem and they are not wanting to work with us.
I know of someone who went with Home depot and they liked them. Hope this helps

we used jon from turnkey- he has done all our household jobs and is resonable with price- I beleive he did our floors for 3500 and we choose one from home depot- a darker wood bruce something or another if you interested I can look harder for you. and I have Pictures if you would like to see them. I also have 2 small children and a large dog and the floors still look great.

I would also suggest bamboo, heard ppl love their bamboo floors. However I do not know an installer. I would NOT recommend meridian to install hardwood though. If you decided to go hardwood I would suggest dustless sanding, Bona systems are good for that and I like the floor cleaning spray.

We just bought bamboo for our 2nd floor remodeling project (it hasn't been installed yet), bamboo floors are supposedly stronger, better for the environment and cheaper than oak. With kids and dogs, ANY hardwood floor is going to show some scratching and dents, etc., but keep in mind that hardwood is refinishable and laminate is not.

When we moved into our house we had the whole first floor oak flooring refinished. We used "A" Quality Floors in Lincolnwood. They were great and fast, and reasonable, i thought.

Good luck!

I am interested in knowing what recommendations you have been receiving, as I have thinking about hardwood floors as well, but with my dog I am not so sure.

We bought our hardwood floors from Lumber Liquidators. My husband and his buddy installed them throughout the whole house. They look great and are very durable. Check them out on-line - www.lumberliquidators.com.
They also carry bamboo flooring. = )
