M.H. asks from Pflugerville, TX

Hi,
I haven't been on here in a long time, but I finally felt it was time for me to ask a question. My husband and I are three young kids (ages 5yo, 2yo, and 7mo) moved here in April from Wisconsin. I am really finding it hard to make new friends down here, for both myself and my kids. My husband travels 50% or more with his job. I am wondering if any of you can lead me in the right direction of meeting people that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to join, ie. MOPS, The Little Gym, Gymboree for kids, etc. Or maybe some of you would like to get together sometime. Thank you all for your time.
M.

Hi M.,
Not sure where you live in Austin, but Central Market on Lamar and 41st is a great place to meet other moms. They have a playground outside, and you can get a snack or coffee.
Should you ever want to meet there, please let me know. I know how it is moving to a city you don't know anyone, as i have moved a lot since i was 17.
I'd be happy to meet you there, or anywhere really.
please email me privately of you want. I live east central.

I am an organizer for one of the pregnancy/mommy groups at Meetup.com, and as a first-time mom it's been a great way for me to get out of the house and meet some other moms from all over Austin. Some groups have a nominal membership fee, and others do not.

Library lapsits as someone else suggested are wonderful places to meet other moms.

Best of luck, and welcome to Austin!

We go to a very large but if I may say close nit church. If you get plugged in the kid activities are endless through out the week. We have what we call Real Life Groups that meet at each others homes during the week. The church is called Hill Country Bible Church and the sister churches are located through out Austin/Leander/South side now. The home church I go to is at 620 and Little Elm. ###-###-#### or HCBC.com for more information. It is non-denominational also so everyone is welcome of course.

Hi M.,

We moved to Austin this past July. What we did was go to church. I just started women's study last night and found out a lot of families home school and they set up a weekly play date where all families (not just homeschoolers) are welcome. So I plan to do that with both of my kids since it's in the afternoon after school. Maybe get plugged in that way? Send me a note if you'd like a copy of the info.

There is also a web site called meetup.com that I've not used but I see it often recommended. If you have a hobby or want to hang around other moms, there is probably a meetup group you can join.

If you are looking for some way to meet people that's less formal, you might want to try parks. They're all around town and the ones that I have found are pretty busy (looks busy with moms' groups). My short list: Circle C park west of Slaughter and Escarpment, Dick Nichols park off Beckett, and Zilker Park playground which is free to park during the week ($3 I think on weekends). I know there are others but I've not found those yet.

I hope that helps! Austin's a pretty friendly town so no doubt you'll get plugged in soon.

M., what area do you live in. I live in Pflugerville. I am however a full time working mom and have a 15mth overly active baby girl. She is the greatest joy. You may just want to join other SAHM (stay at home mom) playgroups that are more catered to non working moms. They get together during the week, got to parks etc. Unfortunately I do not have that flexibility, but me and another mom have gotten together on the weekends for playdates. Let me know if that is something you would be interested in doing! We would love for you to join us! Coming to a new city and not knowing anyone must be hard. Mamasource is a wonderful tool, I love it and you also give/receive great advice. This is how I met the other mom I go to playdates with. My husband is a realtor (8 yrs now) and I have been in Austin since '88. I am 37 yrs old 1st time mom, and we have been married now for 2 1/2 yrs. Good luck and hopefully I will hear back from you soon.

Hi M.,

I think we emailed each other when you first moved here, but I never heard back from you. My daughter Devon is 2. We like to go to the Circle C Metro Park a lot - just west of Escarpment on Slaughter. Let me know if you'd ever like to meet there.

Hey this could be a good thing for you we go to a lap sit at the cedar park library they have it for infants for the 7 month old then for the older kids it is a play group with reading songs singlanguage and playtime( similar to that of Gymboree) for free. I am also staying home and my hubby is always working feel free to get a hold of me one of my close friends is in this situation also and would love for all of the kids to get togother for a play date my little one is 8.5 months and hers are 3 and 1. If you are interested we can meet sometime for a play date or even just for the library time.
