Looking into and Leapster or a Vtech for My 4 Year Old

With Xmas and my son's birthday around the corner I am looking into present ideas for him. My son already enjoys playing some games on a computer, so I wanted to look into some more educational options. I also was intrigued by the books that help the kids read along with them. I haven't done much research yet into Leapster or Vtech, but I was wondering what other mom's out there thought. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

We have a VSmile that my daughter didn't care for, but my son loves. It acts up occasionally but nothing too bad. It also puts up with a lot of tugging and banging around and has held up pretty well.

We also have a LeapPad that my daughter got several years ago and still have. We had to have it replaced within 3 or 4 months and she didn't use it a ton, but it would never work right. The cartridges are always coming up unrecognized so we blow in them (like the old Nintendo cartridges back in the day) and put them back in, sometimes we have to put them in carefully and pull them back out just the tiniest bit, other times we have to slam them in there really hard... it's ridiculous for 15 minutes of playtime!

I don't know if their newer products are in better shape or not, but those are y experiences. Good luck!

Good Morning. I bought the leapster reader this summer for my 4 year old and she loves it. I do a lot of research for whatever I choose to buy on amazon.com - it helps to get other parents personal opinions. I plan on purchasing the younger reader for my 2 year old and the video game leapster at xmas for the kids. Good Luck with your purchase.

We have one of each, plus a vtech video game in my sons room (the reason for the vtech hand held for my daughter) already had alot of the games for it!!
They are both great, one blue, one pink, the prices are about the same and the game prices are about the same.
Either one is durable, they are dropped all the time and carried everywhere. The only thing that I did was buy the power cord for each so that when they were staying still (HAHAHA!!) at home they could plug it in and save the batteries!! A great deal at only about $10.00.

Good Morning B., Our gr son Corbin 4, Loves his leapster books. He has a dinosaur book HE loves them, Words and Things. I just found him one he can help his little brother learn his ABC's plus helps him learn to spell. He has a story book that he can recite from listening to it so many times. Plus if the book is lost in the toys at home the pen will still recite stories.

You can find them at Wal-Mart very reasonably priced compared to ToysRus.

I am completely in favor of the leapster books

God Bless you

We did leapsters for our 6 year old twins and almost 3 year old for Christmas. They all love them. We bought each a game to go with it but they never play those. They play the games that are already on the leapster. Definately worth the money.
