Looking to Join a Welcoming Church...Suggestions?

I am in search of a welcoming church to attend...any suggestions? As a child I was Methodist but rarely attended, and my husband is Catholic, but again, rarely attended. I am looking for a relaxed and friendly group, and I would love it if there is a strong choir or music program I can join (as I am quite arts oriented), and a nurturing youth program for my son. Any suggestions are welcomed, but I would prefer the north/central/east parts of the Valley. I find myself feeling lonely lately, and am hoping to connect with other adults/parents and feel more grounded. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

I love, love, love Unity of Phoenix at 16th St & Greenway. They are very welcoming, I have met many families of mixed denominational backgrounds (my DH was raised Catholic & I was raised Baptist, for example). They have an awesome music director and seem very into incorporating the arts into their worship, and I've been delighted with the children's programs.

Hi S.,
I am a member at Christ Church of the Valley (CCV). We really love it. It is aimed towards men because they are usually the individual in the family that rejects church, but are consequentially the individual in the family that has the most influence on the belief system and morality of the entire family. Don't worry though, there are tons of activities for women including a group that meets at night so working mom's are able to join. Our favorite part is the youth program and the teachings (non demoninational and straight from the Bible). Which ever church you chose, you are making an awesome decision to raise your child in a God centered home. I hope you find one that is the right fit for you and the rest of your family. Good luck searching and God bless!

Hi S.,

We belong to Central Christian Church and have been members for over 5 years. We attend the Gilbert campus now but as someone mentioned there is another location in Mesa. It is a very large church with tons of options for children and adults. Cal, the pastor is absolutely amazing to listen to and every service is different. Defintely not boring! Everytime I leave I feel so refreshed and so thankful to have found such a wonderful place to worship God. The music is great too. Our children absolutely love it. You will not be judged and it is a come as you are atmosphere. There main focus is the children and there future. www.cccev.com Check it out...you will love it too.

God Bless,

I go to Community Church of Joy on 75th ave and the 101. They have a wonderful youth program. If that is too far away they do have a sister church, Community Church of Grace (I think that's what it's called). That church has a strong musical program. I'm sure they're on the web. Also, All Saints Lutheran Church on 7th st. and Coral Gables is very nice. It's a traditional Lutheran Church, close knit and has a beautiful choir. They've done a lot of remodeling lately and have a wonderful hymnal. I suggest, trying some churches until you find one that's the right fit for your family.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a stong youth program, they call it primary for your son and, even boy scouts and a young mens program for later. They also have similar things for the girls. The church also has a society for women that helps in bring relief to each other. When I had my babies I didn't have to worry about cooking for my family for two weeks because the other gals at church cooked for my family. They also did this for us when my husband had a surgery and helped us move. It doesn't matter where you live because there is always a church you can go to that all has the same doctrine. Each one has a choir that practices each week. There are also interest groups that if you are in to painting then one night a week you can get together with other girls that have the same interests. There are also play groups and other things to help keep sanity and away from being lonely. The church is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and his love for each of his children. If you'd like to know more and where you can attend then just call ###-###-####. Or this time of year you can go and see a christmas light display for free. It's beautiful I go each year. The address of where to go is 525 E Main st. Mesa, AZ 85203. I promise you wont regret it.

Mountain View Presbyterian at Hayden & Mountain View in Scottsdale (McCormick Ranch area) has an AMAZING music program - the choir has performed in France, in Italy and was just at Carnagie Hall over Thanksgiving. There is also a children's choir and bell choirs for both adults & children. The children's & youth ministry programs are also fantastic. For fellowship there is a weekly dinner every Wednesday, a "young families" group that gets together monthly and a Moms & Tots group that meets twice a month, plus there are always a number of study groups going on. The services are traditional so they are a little more formal, however the atmosphere is still relaxed and the people are very friendly. Also, the church leadership is fantastic. You can probably tell I love the place! Anyway you can get an idea of the everything going on by checking out the newsletter at www.mtviewpres.org , then click on Literature & Forms, then Monthly Church Newsletter. I wish you the best of luck in your seach and hope you find the perfect church home for you and your family.

My family has been attending Hillside Baptist Church on Thunderbird and 17th Ave (right behind the high school) for 3 years now. We were new to the area and it had and still has just a down-home welcoming atmosphere. The people are so friendly, helpful, and real. We run around 300 (I think) and have a wonderful music program that has a great balance between the old traditional music and the new contemporary music. My children also love their sunday school classes as we do ours. If you are interested in coming let me know and I can meet you in front and show you where to go-I know when we were looking for a church I hated that feeling of not knowing anyone or where to go. God Bless

I have the perfect church for you. It's non denominational, has a great youth program where the kids can't wait to go and they have a couple of bands who, at times, really rock out!! Very laid back, wear your flip flops, jump suit, etc. Not your traditional church, but the message comes through. Pastor is very funny and relates todays lifestyle to the bible. Please come and check it out!

My family and I attend Central Christian Church of the East Valley in Mesa and the good news is that you would have two campuses to choose from. They just built a campus in Gilbert too. It is a wonderful welcoming church that gives you numerous options. They have a classic service, which is very mellow and sing more traditional songs. Then there is the contemporary service, which is very upbeat and they sing more songs you might hear on one of the Christian radio stations. They just recently added a third type of service called Third Format. Basically you can sit and worship God and rock out at the same time! lol It's pretty cool. Anyway, it's not your typical church. We tackle challenging issues that happen in everyday life and relate it all back to the Lord. I don't really think I've explained it all that well, but you should go to www.cccev.com anc check it out. Oh yeah, and the children's ministry is really good, but they've been lacking volunteers. My hubby and I just signed up and started helping and it's really cool. My daughter has always loved it, but now we get to see how they really work and the kids really seem to thrive.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only place for me. You would attend a building according to where you live, be in close proximatey to those who will become your support group and have many opportunities to serve , as well as be served. The church organization is such that at every age there is a place to belong and to be supported in.It is a more reverent atmosphere on Sundays, which I feel is crucial in this time of craziness. The gospel of Jesus Christ is taught and gives a sense of peace and joy..... you will feel grounded and find meaning to this life, and be surrounded by those who share your same feelings. Music is generally a very big part of this Church! I know that my ward ( that is what a congregational division of the church is called based upon where you live)has an incredible choir of which I love to attend because of the fun we have as well as the uplifting music we are priviledged to sing and perform. I am sure your talents will be utilized in a way that is very rewarding for you. You will also find other women to bond with spiritually as well as creatively and even find others to have play groups with for your son. The blessings of being a member of this church are immeasurable. But you would really have to find that out for yourself! Go to the Christmas light display at the Arizona Mesa Temple, tour the visitors center there, and if you feel so inclined, speak to a missionary there and they will be sure to guide you in the direction you are seeking.
