I would like suggestions on how to better my 6 yr old son's low self esteem. He recently started wrestling and seemed to truly take a liking to it. well now he seems to think he is just not good enough, I have tried several things and am open to any and all suggestions. Also my son has been acting really naughty at school, and I visit him for lunch once every 1-2 wks. I also have good comunication with his teacher. I feel like I am at my witts end.....please offer up some new suggestions.........thank you very much!

What can I do next?

I agree about the karate suggestion. My five-year-old has low self esteem that has really turned around since he has been in karate. The coach is very concerned about his success and helps whenever he can. My son even took third place at the in house tournament...and he was the smallest one there. Karate has really helped him. I can't say enough about it.

Good luck...I know it is hard. I hope things work out for you!

I'm confused as to where the low self esteem comes in. Did he have it before he started wrestling? Did you get him involved in wrestling to help his self esteem? Maybe you should get him involved in something that's less competitive - more about being your personal best? I don't know. I don't necessarily agree with having kids compete at such a young age. Does your son have much "down-time" when he's just at home, or does wrestling keep him really busy? What causes you to believe he has low self esteem? Is his coach a positive person? I guess I'm not offering much advice - just posing questions. Good luck.

Did he have low self esteem before wrestling. Maybe karate would be better for him. Is he doing something that people are telling him he's not good enought? Was he naughty before or has this just started? Is this going on everyday? Is he getting enougth sleep? How about what he's eating? I know these are just more questions, to your question but there is a lot going on at this age it could be any number of things. From just being tired to something going on inside him, and he might not know how to deal with it on his own or how to ask for help. Is there someone that he can talk to? If this has been going on for quite some time I would talk to his Dr. or maybe have him see someone. I'm sorry this was not much. I hope things get better.

see if you can determine a pattern to the naughtiness. when it started or does it occur at certain times? See if he can explain why he thinks he's not good enough. Maybe a new member started or maybe the coach is trying to help him, but he's taking it wrong. You can always sit in on a practice and see if there's anything unusual. If it has to do with wrestling, maybe he's having trouble with wrestling as a sport not rough-housing. there are certain things you can/can't do in a sport, but he's hearing "you're bad". Being naughty at school depends upon what he's doing. Try to find the root by defining the befores. writing it down may help a pattern emerge.
