Mitral Valve Prolapse

I am 31 years old with a healthy 3 year old son. My husband and I are thinking about another child, and I have recently been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse. I had an echo done, and it seemed to be mild. My doctor does not seemed concerned with this at all, but I am a little nervous. Has anyone delt with this condition during pregnancy?

What can I do next?

I have a MVP as well and haven't had any issues with it at all. I have a 2 1/2 year old son and a six week old daughter and didn't have any complications with either pregnancy. I've been told to take antibiotics when I have my teeth cleaned, but that's it. The only way I know I even have it is if I'm under a lot of stress and I get some mild chest pain, but otherwise it doesn't bother me at all. Hope that helps.

My daughter who is 2 has mitral valve prolapse. She has an EKG and ECHO done yearly. The only concern they have for her is having antibiotics before dental procedures. From what I am told, MVP is fairly common. The valve of the heart doesn't close all the way and a bit of regurgitation happens. We were told some people have this and never know. We only know because she has many other medical issues.

Best of luck to you!

My mother has had it her whole life. She had 2 kids and still deals with it. She said that was how they found it was when she was pregnant with my brother. She had no problems during either pregnancy with it. Hope that makes you feel a little better.
Good luck to you!

DeDe,

I am a 32 year old mother of a 15 month old beautiful healthy girl. I have MVP with regurgitation, which is where the blood will occasionally flow back into the chamber it just left. It only acts up with caffeine and stress. I have had it since I was in my early teens. MVP did not effect me in the slightest during my pregnancy or even now because I stay away (as much as possible) from the things that make it act up. Good luck and I hope I have eased your concernes.

Well I am almost 30yrs old and I also have mitral valve prolaspe as well. I have had 4 pregnecys. I was diagnosed with it in 2003 when I ended up in the hospital for 8days and in 2004 I had my last child. I was fine with my pregnacy so dont worry if the doctor is not concerned. If anything you can consulte your doctor but I had no problems with my pregnacy at all. Good luck to you

I have dealt with mitral valve prolapse through two pregnancies. I was five months old with my first baby when they found the prolapse along with an irregular rhythm ( every other beat is premature causing very low weak heart rate and rhythm) due to premature labor. They kinda freaked out about it at the time because i was only 16 but its not such a big deal anymore ( after six years). My prolapse didnt cause any complications with my second child. They automatically had to put on a heart monitor when it came time to give birth and they had to be careful about what meds i could take after birth but that was the only consequence of the prolapse for me.

I was diagnosed with MVP when I was 14 - during my first pregnancy, my OBGYN had me visit a cardiologist each trimester, to make sure nothing was happening with it via echo. Nothing happened - second baby we didn't bother. Nothing happened again. :)

Just make absolutely certain that you take the antibiotics you're given for things like amnio, dental work, and they'll probably IV them if you have a c-section. Endocarditis is, to my knowledge, the biggest 'threat' to MVP.
