More and More Food Allergies

I have a beautiful, active, and healthy 9 year old girl who has been devolping new allergies every few months. We are now up to 5 food items and numerous medication allergies. Has anyone else ever experienced their children getting new allergies this often? The problem is that she has become very worried about what she eats and is even losing sleep and becoming very anxious and having trouble sleeping. Any ideas to ease her mind and mine.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well Thank You to everyone who responded to my question. I have taken all the information down and will be bringing it to the doctor in a few weeks. The doctor and I have discussed her anxiety and we have agreed to do some controlled exposures which scare me but my daughter is open to doing. Hopefully we can reassure her some more by doing these tests but I hope we don't cause further problems or concerns for her. I just want to ease her fears and keep her wonderful strong personality as it is. She has been sleeping better since her teacher, the school nurse, her, and I came up with a plan to make sure she was not at risk. I think we may have calmed her some.

Thanks Again Everyone,

B. O

The people I know who have had success in beating this type of problem have all put their kids on Reliv's kids' formula. The kids are getting the nutrition they need and, over a few months' time (sometimes less), are losing the allergies because the imbalance in their bodies has been corrected and stabilized. You could also have her tested and put her on all kinds of meds, but a lot of people don't really want to do that, especially with one so young. (Not to mention the expense of meds - plus they don't really correct the problem, just mask it or relieve the pain from rashes, stomach reactions and so forth). My family has had life-changing results with Reliv - my son is no longer lactose-intolerant. My friend's child had dozens of food allergies but doesn't anymore. I'd be happy to share more and give you hope if you like. Feel free to email me back!

Hi B.,
The lack of certain digestive enzymes can make digesting food a difficult task. If she has had any antibiotics in her lifetime, the lack of digestive flora can also be a problem. I would suggest supplementing probiotics such as Lactobacillis Acidophilus. I would also recommend adding a digestive enzyme that contains amylase, lipase, protease and lactase.
Food allergies are commonly a result of the body's inability to digest and absorb food.
Since her body cannot process food properly, she is stuck in a fight or flight response making it difficult to sleep or rest.
Absorbing food will reverse these symptoms she is suffering from.
Hope this is helpful. My husband is a chiropractor and we see cases like this in our office often.
Good luck to you both,
E.:-)

There is a diet called GAPS (stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome) that addresses your issue exactly - food intolerances and digestives issues and how they are connected to learning disorders and anxiety issues. It is a difficult diet but can LITERALLY heal the gut so you can tolerate foods again. And doing the diet might help your daughter feel like you are doing something to help make it better so she won't have to worry anymore. There is a yahoo group called GAPShelp where you could ask questions and the books in online...www.gapsdiet.com - it really does work.

I would have her checked for Celiac Disease. Left untreated other allergies can develop. Even though this is an autoimmune disease. Check out celiacdisease.org. Best of wishes. Let me know how she makes out

Hi B.,
I have heard of what you are talking about 0 unfortunately, it is not that uncommon that once you get a food allergy, your system is somehow sensitized and you can develop new ones. I am certainly not an expert, but have several allergies myself and have lived with them for about 15 years.

Two things I would suggest -
1. supplement with probiotics - I take the All Flora and I use a powder (used to give it to my one year old when she was on antibiotics). I take 1/4 teaspoon before breakfast - helps to keep a good balance of digestive flora.

2. the other thing I would suggest is rotating the foods she CAN eat - not eating too much of any one thing. The more you eat of something, the higher chance of becoming allergic. I know they have books about the rotation diet - I would do the best you can given the food allergies. But the basic idea is: chicken on monday, fish on tuesday, beef on wednesday, something else (tofu? lamb? beans? can't remember exactly) on Thursday - then start over again. The idea is that with days off between eating certian types of food you will minimize your chances of overexposure and therefore, developing new allergies.

Sorry I can't be of more help - the other suggestions about joining support groups are great. I would also find a really good nutritionist who can help you through the minefield of food allergies and kids. the help and support of a qualified and trained professinal can be invaluable. Unfortunatley, mine moved to the southwest and is't around anymore- but maybe through the support groups you can find someone good to assist you and your daughter.

good Luck!
Warmly,
E.

Hi B.,
Congrats to you and family for doing all you can. my oldest has severe food allergies. We discovered them pretty young, but he is still very concerned about food. Unfortunatley his allergy extends to touch, sso he needs to be aware that hands are being washed, etc. I would find a good support group, even allow your daughter to talk with the school psych. My son is only 5yr and I can see the stress he handles already.
Finding yummy foods that are as similaur to main stream foods are a great way to help your child adjust. All our kids want to feel "normal".
I have lots of recipes, feel free to let me know what the allergies are and I can e-mail you some.
Keep up the great work!
M.

Both my boys, 4 and 21 months have MANY food allergies. (too many to list) I would suggest joining a support group. They have several online and some groups you go to in person. I have found many recipes and advice from others. It might make her feel better if she knew other kids with allergies and if she knows how to "protect herself" and knows what to do if she has a reaction.

You can email me offline if you would like.

What is she allergic to? Maybe I can be of more help if I knew what she doesn't tolerate.

As a possibility to why so many allergies are building up, I'd hypothesize that she might be lacking in Vitmain D. D deficiency is linked to autoimmune diseases. Her immune system is off kilter, so maybe. That's just a wild guess though. It seems that these type of problems are increasing rapidly recently. Years ago you'd hardly hear about them and now it's become common.

Ideas: Rejoice in what she is able to eat. Not everyone can eat anything -- she's not alone. You can find support groups for food allergies/intolerances.

Good luck,
: ) Maureen
