So What Happened?

You are ALL so wonderful!!!!

Thank you so much for the advice! Believe me I will try anything to get this to ease up!!!! I'm barely getting any sleep and I have a 4 year old running circles around me. Heparin, morning sickness, lack of sleep... makes for a very tired mama! At least I don't throw up although there are times I wish I did!

Ginger capsules, jolly ranchers, and lots of fluids.... I feel for you, but know that it will be worth it in the end! I was sick all of 9 months with my first and still decided to have another one!

I am so sorry you are going through this. I can totally sympathize. I had hyperemesis with my pregnancy, and I was miserable. The only things that allowed me to even function everyday was Zofran, preggie drops(same thing as the pops but in a hard candy drop) and Saltines. As hard as it is, it is important to stay hydrated as well especially if you are throwing up. Just sip fluids often throughout the day to prevent becoming dehydrated. Best of luck to you and remember it is all worth it in the end.

I threw up nearly every day for my entire pregnancy both times I was pregnant. I was sick the morning I delivered my second son. Zofran was the only thing that worked for me.
I hope you feel much better very soon!

I had 9 months of morning sickness with my first two pregnancies, discovered acupuncture about 2 months into the third pregnancy. Felt much better after the first session, and almost 100% better after about a month. From then on, it was just a little occasional queasiness. Definitely try it if you can.

There is also a book called Managing Morning Sickness which offers some very good advice for handling serious morning sickness.

Oh you poor thing. Even just thinking back makes me feel nauseous. I lost so much weight because of morning sickness, and i spent so much money on things that just didn't work. After 12 weeks my doctor prescribed maxolon, but i can't remember it working well. I don't think people who haven't had serious morning sickness believe that it is a true and debilitating condition. I certainly didn't until i actually had it. Just eat whatever you feel like, which probably isn't much. Make sure you stay hydrated. Good luck.

I had it bad too :(. My ObGyn gave me Phenegren, which is a prescription for nausea that is safe - worked well but put me to sleep - wish she had given me Zofran (have been it since for nausea and it works well, doesn't make you sleepy- they use this for chemotherapy patients even)

I ate a lot of saltiness crackers for awhile , and Ginger in any form is good - ginger tea , ginger ale , etc
Then I found the strangest thing that the only thing I could hold down was Jason's Deli's loaded Plain Jane Baked Potatoes!! Surprising, but true - you just never know!

Stay well hydrated and make sure what you are drinking is replacing electrolytes, like Gatorade or Smart Water , etc

Good luck and congrTs!

I take my prenatals @ night...and I had to find one that didn't make me sick. Ginger-my fave are Ginger Chews, I find them @ our Target at the check out in the candy section. I shower @ night so I can sleep in longer in the morning (learned that from "The Drs"). Keep something in your stomach at all times...carbs seem to work best. And I know this sounds crazy, but french fries or chips help me (and my girlfriends swear by them too)!

ACUPUNCTURE.

I had BAD morning sickness AND migraines, all day, with BOTH my pregnancies.
Per my OB/GYN, I got acupuncture.
This is the ONLY thing, that stopped it.
Only 1 half hour session was all it took.
And it is very relaxing and does not hurt.
Of course, see an Acupuncturist, that handles pregnant women.

The smell of citrus really helped. I would smell oranges throughout the day when I started to feel bad. Eat what sounds good to you. Don't worry about eating the right foods in your 1st trimester. In fact, alot of moms actually lose weight. If something sounds good, eat it, but, eat slowly and chew your food really well. Take walks...the fresh air is good for you. Suck on ginger candies or drink ginger ale. Also, since my prenatal vitamins were making my nausea worse, my doctor suggested for me to take folic acid supplements instead...at least for the 1st trimester. Once my morning sickness subsided, I would return to the full vitamin.

And like previous posters said, if all else fails, don't be afraid to take Zofran. It really does help.

Not much. I had it the entire pregnancy 24/7 starting about 4 or 5 weeks into it. While nothing "cured" it (except going into active labor and actual delivery, LOL), there were a few things I learned to keep it from being worse than it already was:

Avoid caffeine. I could TASTE caffeine when I was pregnant. And it made the nausea worse.
Munch food almost constantly-- an empty stomach doesn't work...neither does the BRAT diet, lol.
Stay hydrated-- unusual things often made me feel a little better(chocolate milk, red grapefruit juice, banana icees).

When you can't function--use the Zofran prescription the doctor can give you. It helped me a lot--though even that didn't make it go away altogether---just kept me functional.

The wrist bands (sea bands?) did NOTHING for me, but did give me sore wrists where the little dot pressed. :(

And, honestly, truly, if you are a woman of faith, remember that God knows your suffering (and everyone's suffering) and you can endure it with His help. Praying daily for the strength to endure helped me keep it all in perspective.
God Bless!

I was sick at least 3 times per day for 8 1/2 months. I took the popular medication that was supposed to work and it didn't. In the long term it caused birth defects and killed children.

Just deal with it the best you can, some of the moms here may have wonderful home remedies that will ease the discomfort. Good luck!

Switching prenatal vitamins, not missing a meal and obeying my cravings.

Most prenatal vitamins make me SO sick, hilariously enough the ones that stink the worst make me the less sick.

Not missing a meal is very important because your blood sugar drops and makes you nauseous , pregnancy makes it so that you need more nutrients so women get sick before they know they need to step it up.

Obeying cravings....well, the baby knows what it wants, for whatever reason youll know exactly what it is and what it isnt.

If all else fails chew on crackers and bananas and drink water.

Hi Jodi,

Make sure your prenatals are really absorbing. The lack of nutrition to support you and your little one will create nausea, much like going without a meal will make you queasy.

Wrist bracelets utilizing acupressure helped me. Ginger supplements as welI. I wish I had known that my prenatals werent as effective as they should have been. Most aren't.

Congratulations!
M.

I have felt your pain. I really had the hardest time with eating/drinking. If you get to that point, it really helped me to eat frozen things. Slushies from sonic, ensure frozen like a slushie, fruit, whatever my husband could come up with.
Just take it easy.

I learned to go ahead and wake up, brush my teeth and then vomit, brush teeth and get on with the day..

Otherwise all day long I felt like I was going to be sick..

I even had MS during my delivery the morning our child was born. The Deliver Nurse freaked out, but my husband told her .. "Oh, it must 7:00 am, she does this every morning. ".. My answer? "All better!"

Morning sickness is gnarly. My strategy was to give what my body it wanted - rest, sips of water, lavender and mint tea, food that didn't smell nauseating, and I concentrated on learning what triggered my nausea to be worse. So, ultimately, for me, I never let my stomach go empty or get too full.

For several weeks, I ate only tea, water, and nibbled on bananas, dairy products and toast. Then when bananas and dairy start to smell nauseating, I nibbled on melon and cherrios. Funny enough, carbonated drinks and salt made me cringe, so soda and crackers never made it into my diet.

Lastly, my saving grace was warm baths and showers. I think I took a prolonged bath and/or shower nearly everyday for 3 1/2 months. In the shower, I would just sit and let the water fall on me. My nausea disappeared when I stepped into that water. Ahhhh.

Lastly, I recommend happy thoughts. All the discomfort is not in vain. You are growing a baby. Take it a day at a time and on days when the nausea subsides a bit, keep a list for "things to do" so that you have something to look forward to.

Good luck!

I feel your pain, you poor thing!!! I swear that was the worst part of being pregnant. I would rather do labor twice!!
Nothing is perfect, but to survive I tried to eat tiny bits constantly. An empty stomach is even worse. Try having a snack when you wake up in the night to pee, and keep some crackers or something on your night stand to eat BEFORE you even get out of bed.
For an emergency...like to keep yourself from puking in the car or in a restaurant...try sniffing a handkerchief with an aromatherapy oil on it. Peppermint, lemon, or eucalyptus worked for me. Sniff a couple at the store to find a fragrance that works for you, you will be amazed! (It's definitely personal, though...some women swear by lavender, and that only made me queasy, so try a bunch). This only works for a couple of minutes, but it does the trick. I was in law school with my first pregnancy, and this helped me to keep it together during lectures!

50-100mg B6 and half a Unisom. I recommend this to any pregnant M. with horrible morning sickness. My last pregnancy I had hyperemesis (morning sickness that goes beyond morning sickness and lasts the entire pregnancy) this and Zofran helped some.

If ginger ale, peppermint tea, preggy pops (or any hard candy) don't work for you, try this. You can do it up to 3x/day PRN. Just don't do it if it makes you drowsy!

ETA: PRN=as needed

I used a Vitamin B6 Herb from Shaklee. It helped sooooo much!!!!! I went from morning sickness to all day sickness. Some days were just morning and some were all day long. I know what you're going through. I was also prescribed something that melts on your tongue but I never used it. I plan to use it when I get the stomach flu this year. I heard it works wonders for that!
