I think TF Plano/Allen is correct.
And having this happen every day for the last 7 days is enough for a call to the pediatrician.
Good luck!

This does sound like drainage from her sinuses etc. when she lies down. If it's not happening when she's upright during the day, then that's likely what it is. I'd stop giving the medication (it might be the wrong med for the job) and get her to the doctor to diagnose her. It might be allergies, and if so, you want to be sure it's the right medication. Sometimes no medication is OK, if she can sleep with her head and shoulders well elevated, and/or if you add a cold mist humidifier to her room. But do see a doctor, and don't wait for us here on Mamapedia -- we're not doctors!

What kind of medication are you giving her if you have no idea what's causing her symptoms???

Please call her pediatrician and have her seen. There are any number of things it could be. Allergies causing post-nasal drip pouring down the back of her throat; acid reflux; etc. I wouldn't try to figure this one out on your own or diagnose her through Doctor Google Fingers. And no one here is a doctor.

Definitely get her checked with the doc. Milk can cause mucus as I have had the problem. I will give my experience though. My daughter was about 3 1/2 (now 13 yrs). She started snoring first, then grinding her teeth. Then she started having choking fits. I did cut milk at first. But I also took her to the doc due to the snoring and teeth grinding. She was experiencing sleep apnea due to the two. It turned out that her tonsils were so large they were almost touching, which also explained why she preferred liquids and softer foods that she could easily swallow. The ENT said she would probably grow into them but we decided to do the tonsil and adenoid removal. While the recovery was not really fun, her eatin improved a bit, the grinding and snoring and choking went away completely. The only time she has had an issue was when she had warm milk before bed--ironically because it helps her sleep.

:-( I've had this happen to me. If it is not due to sinus drainage going DOWN, it could be stomach acid coming UP. I would actually inhale some acid and wake up coughing and coughing and would think this may be the way I would die...

It no longer happens to me. I found that I am allergic/sensitive to some foods (IgG blood allergy testing). When I eliminated them from my diet, this quit happening. I got healthier in other ways as well.

I did have upper respiratory allergies as well, and was under the care of an allergist for most of my life. I was on 5 medications for allergies and asthma. Yet I had never been told that FOODS we are sensitive to can contribute and now I only take one OTC medication per day for my allergies. When I asked my allergist WHY WHY WHY he had never told me, he just said insurance doesn't pay for IgG testing so they don't talk about that testing, and since they can't test with insurance paying (it isn't that expensive) they just don't mention the food possibility at all.
WHAT! ? ! ? !

hmmm, I would think it could be drainage from allergies or a cold. Maybe an ENT thing. My 5 year old did this until she had her tonsils and adenoids out. Good Luck talk to the doc!

As she is ten can you give a few bigger pillows so she is reclyned upward a bit to see if it helps? Also no dairy right before bed.

Definitely have the doctor check her out to rule out illness or allergies. Meanwhile, keep her room cool at night. A cold air humidifier is good. Have her use saline spray at night - it will help with post nasal drip and allergies. And have her sleep with her head raised up - a couple of pillows should do it. Keep some cold water by the bed so she can drink when she wakes up.

Good luck!

This happens to my husband a few times a year. I'm fairly sure that it is a post nasal drip. Allergies....... you need to try to dry her up. But, of course, all the doctor.
Good luck!
