I have a 2 yr. old niece that has allergies and last week she had red cheeks that went up to her eyes and they became swollen. Once the rash left her face it went to her arms. Any Mom's with any experience in this type redness or rash. I suggested her Mom take her to the doctor since the eyes became swollen but she gave her benedryl and it seemed to get much better. I feel it was an allergic reaction to something but wondering to what. She has been taking swim lessons 2 days a week but the pool she is swimming in has had the same chemicals, no changes, and she has swam in this pool many times. I am wondering if the chemicals were off and it was a chemical reaction myself. Any advise is welcomed.

What can I do next?

the cheeks sound like fifth disease. they thought i had it. however if it moved to her arms it could have been a reaction to something. the fact that she didnt get a rash everywhere else tho is stumping me. I know you can be exposed to things many times before you have a reaction. so it could have been the pool. i would suggest having her allergy tested good luck

Another thought would be to check what she ate that day. Was she given anything new and different? Also they can develop allergic reactions to food over night! It is just another consideration to examine. Hope she feels better and it clears up.

Hi! I'm not sure I have an answer for you, but my boys both woke up with bright red cheeks when they were around this age. I took them both to the doctor and she said that it was fifth's disease. It's nothing major, but it looked like someone had slapped their cheeks so hard. It was amazing how red their little cheeks were. After their little cheeks started looking better, it started on their arms, stomach, and legs. I also worked at a daycare for a couple of years and we had this problem with the kids there also. There's really nothing to do for it, but just wait it out. I don't know if this helps at all, but thought I would share my two cents :) Google fifths disease pictures and see if that looks similar to what your niece has.

Like the others have said it sounds a lot like 5th disease. Its also known as "slap cheek" cause it looks like someone has slapped the person across the cheek making it red.

I would take her to Dr and see if it is fifths disease..it starts on the cheeks..lookslike been slapped..and hten spreads...not harmful...unless around a pregnant person..then could be.

Could have been anything. My friend thinks she had a reaction like that to a fellow bus riders perfum. My husband had the same swollen red eyes from exposure to a rental van that had been smoked in. Any type of particulate, smoke, perfume, pollen, dust, dander, etc. can set it off in people who don't normally suffer from allergies.

Benedryl is always a good thing to try before bothering with a doctors office visit.

It sounds like she might have what they call Fifths Disease. It's a rash, usually on the arms/legs and they have what they call 'slap cheek' looks like someone slapped them. They often feel like they have fever but usually don't. It's contagious but not generally harmful. It's very common and usually spreads through public schools like wildfire. Here is a link http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/f...

My children have had it, once when I was about 6 months pregnant. If she is around a pregnant woman, they shouldn't worry too much. Most women are immune to the disease and IF anything were to occur it's usually in the 1st trimester. Information on that is here http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/revb/respiratory/B19&p...

But it'll just go away in time. Benadryl will help if she's itching, which is common too.

Sounds like an allergic reaction. Esp if mom gave Benadryl and it helped. Perhaps the pool was recently shocked and/or the chemicals are out of balance? My son has eczema and pool water has a tendency to be harsh. We have noticed more flareups of his ezcema since going to the pool, but Benadryl helps. I would also suggest just washing her off after the pool with warm water to rinse the chemicals off. Hopefully that will help.
