Hi,
My baby's birthday is coming soon and I would like to have an unforgettable party for him but we don't know any kids or other babies to come to the party. I am the first child married and with a baby and all of my friends are single and have not kids. I literally don't know anybody else with a baby around my baby's age. Most of my family's is back home so even though my baby has a lot of cousins we can't share with them this time.

So, my dilemma is that even though I want to plan something fun for my baby I can't do it with kids. I come from a tradition of having a piñata party and all that stuff but I need a different type of party for my baby to enjoy just with who we have now which are mostly adults in the family. My mother in Law, my parents and siblings and some close friends. Among all these people, we don't have any other kid! Isn't that funny. Anyways, I want to ask other moms any ideas of what to do on that special first birthday for my baby to have and make great pictures for memories even though there won't be any other kids?

Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, Thank all of the people who reply to my request for advice. I definitely feel better now that I know it's not a big deal not to have more kids on my baby's first year party. I grew up with lots of cousins and lots of kids around me and had piñata parties since my 1st b-day so I guess I got overwhelmed by that thought of the ultimate "piñata" party for my son as well. But I put my feet o earth thanks to all of you who gave me your feed back and I decided that I will go with the flow and still make the party with my family and have a great time no matter what, and I still will have the piñata for my son and keep the tradition and have him tore it apart and enjoy it all for himself, and then... share it with the adults, if there is something left from it... that is... lol

Thanks to all of you!

Susana

Susana,
Don't sweat it. Just having your family and a few friends is fine. I think that having a small first b-day is fine because you will have other "big" parties, trust me. I am a mother of two and for my first I kind of went all out and it was nice but my son does not remember it, sure we have nice pictures but still he doesn't remember. For my second child I did it a little defferent. I went small with family and we had a pinata which we all had a swing at and it was a lot of fun. Now that my boys are six and three I do go all out and its a lot of fun because they help me out with the planning and decorating. So don't worry about having a big first b-day make it more personal and family orientated.
Good Luck.

Hi Susana,

Don't worry, the 1st birthday will not be rememberable for your child. Save it for when he is five. Take pictures for him to look at when he is older.

But it seems that you have friends and family to invite. Make it fun, that is all you really need to do for your child.

If you are desperate for some kids to be around his age and you are open to meeting new people, join a Mommy and Me class or an local online group with moms. I L. looking for parties in my area where my kid can make new friends.

Hope this helps.

It's true!!! They don't remember nor do they care. I have three children ages 6,4 and 2 and the older one is the only one that has remembered any birthdays. What i do is invite neighbors close friends and family... Make the birthday baby his/her own little cake strip him/her down into their diaper and have at it! Take lots of pictures... because any party that you have is for your own memories at this stage. Most likely the birthday baby won't even make it through the whole party. It wears them down and they crash early.

You need to meet some other families with kids. A group of mamasource moms got together and we atarted a family group. Are you interested? we get together 1 time a month for social activities with the husbands and kids. It is really fun, multi cultural and just great! We have 2 single moms in the group and the rest are married. We live in los angeles, gardena, torrance and palos verdes and are happy tio include families from other areas too. if you are interested, email me at ____@____.com we are getting together again on March 2 and 2 new families are coming to meet us. I think you would love it!!!

Hi Susana -
I have to agree with the other moms...no matter how unforgettable you make the party, I promise you he will never remember it (and if he did, it would be quite remarkable!!) I know how tempting it is to want to pull out all the stops for your little guy, but just have a good time...We gave my son and daughter a taste of their first chocolate cake - they tore into it, just family - we took lots of pictures and had a blast. Also remember that some kids can get too overwhelmed when there is a lot going on...good luck!

Hi Susana,

I had a very similar predicament! My daughter turned 1 in January and I so wanted a big, fabulous, princessy party with kids her age. I'd just joined a mom's group and just begun to meet other moms with kids my daughter's age but didn't feel like I knew anyone well enough to invite to a birthday party! I was pretty bummed about it but realized that it would have been more for me anyway (and I really hope that doesn't sound preachy or anything to you or anyone who had a big party!!) SO, we had my parents over--that's it. At first, I was so disappointed, but we eneded up having a great time. I decorated as if we were having a bunch of kids over, streamers, ribbon the whole nine. I made a big cake and decorated it. I dressed my daughter up in a pink, frou-frou dress that said "birthday princess" on the front. . .in silver sparkles (oh yes I did) We had such a great time, the pictures are super cute and best of all, she wasn't overwhelmed because the people there were the ones she feels comfortable with. So she was super cute, playing with everyone and babbeling away (she's a little more reserved around people she doesn't know very well.) So I would say this to you, my friend; Do it up big! Decorate, get a pinata (why can't the adults do it?)do what you would do if you had tons of friends with kids her age and make her big day big for her! Even if there are no other kids around. She will get extra attention, you will have cute pictures and precious memories. And PS: find a Mom's Group in your area (if you are in Vegas, contact me and I can give the info for mine.) It has been so wonderful, meeting other moms and seeing my dauhgter interact with other kids!!

Have fun!!
A. :)

like most replied in their posts, your son will not remember. Recently, we sat down with our 4 year old to review video from past 4 b-days and he didn't remember anything from the first 3!
For his 2nd b-day, we also had a sponge bob luau (in November) and everyone had so much fun.

Don't sweat it!!! You care more than them at this point. You are their whole world, so if you are there they are happy. But you can always try a place like kidsconcept in Torrance. Lots of kids are there and they have lots of toddler activities including two areas that are for kids 3 and under. Great place to bring kids and they have adult and kid friendly foods. Check it out.

Hi Susana:

Honestly (and you are probably aware of this), your son is not going to remember what kind of party he has and is not going to care one way or another who is there--young or old, so you should just invite the people you are able to invite and have a nice little celebration and not worry about other babies being there. I'm sure you want to have fun pictures to show him when he is older, but you can still do that. Some kids can't handle all the hoopla anyway, and I'm sure at some point he'll need a nap. I have twins, and on their first birthday, we just ordered some food, invited my parents, my brother and some of our close friends to come over, and there were no other kids at all. So it was really an adult party, but of course we made the kids the focus of the whole thing with minimal decorations. We have lots of fun pictures of them opening gifts and eating cake, etc., even with no other kids there. So, I say do what you can do and don't worry too much about it. HAVE FUN!!!
