My Daughters Hair Is Full of Tangles. . .

My daughter is 29 months and she is just an angel. She sleeps on her back and when she wakes up her air is full of tangles. I can comb them out but she is starting to complain of them hurting and there is always this fuzzy place where they used to be. I have tried using conditioner and that helped a little at first but it seems like the hair has gotten used to it and is now ratting up again. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

part her hair down the middle and put into two braids before she goes to bed. it works even better if you put a little hair gel on dampened hair before braiding. this has worked for me AND my two daughters for many years now. another thing you can try is a satin pillow case.
good luck

I would recommend a spray on conditioner that you apply right before you try to comb out her hair. Walmart sell a generic brand spray on condition for kids that I have found works pretty well.

Hi. My name is M. and have been a hairdresser for 6 years. 1st of all...has she ever had a hair cut? If not, then that probably the main problem. when hair has dead split ends then it will tangle more so it needs to be trimmed. also if her hair curly then it will tangle more too. try using a spray on leave in detangler b4 brushing. that will help too. if she sleeps on a pillow at night, try putting a satin or silk case on it.

I personally know what she is going through. When I was little I would scream when my mom brushed my hair because I was so tender-headed. We used a spray by Johnson & Johnson's. I can't remember the exact name I think it's "tangle free" or something like that, but it is especially to get tangles out. All you do is spray it on her hair whenever you want to comb it and it will wet her hair and also make it easier to comb. I used this until I was in high school.

my daughter is 4 years old and has thin, curly hair. When she wakes up in the morning no matter what i have done its a frizzy mess! She also has lots of cowlicks, thanks to her dad so its sticking up everywhere! the best thing i have found is to spray it with water in the mornings, use a detangler, and this stuff made by "biosilk silk therapy smoothing spray" u can get it in salons. its a spray that helps smooth hair out. I put all that stuff in here hair and then blowdry it. It's a headache to do everymorning but it works wonders! also ive learned that if you use a good adult shampoo and conditioner its lots better than kids! wide tooth combs are also good for getting the tangles out without so much pain......good luck!

That sounds like my daughter.... down to the redheaded temper although she's blonde just has her redheaded daddy's temper.... But sh has really really thin hair and it don't really get tangled as much as it was when it was short. But I used the cheap dollar store leave in detangler for kids. Now I was her hair with whatever shampoo and conditioner I use. Something that helps with the moisture. My son's hair is red and curly and he has the same problem but what helps with his is keeping it cut fairly short. And using the Johnson's baby wash with the baby lotion in it. Well I hope this helps a lil. And good luck with the temper I completly understand how u feel with that one....

Hey J.,
Both of my girls have thick hair..one has curly and the other has straight. I am always battling them with the hair brush. But it would be alot worse if I didnt do what I do as far as conditioning it..I use that Johnson and Johnson's conditioner it comes in an orange tube and has a comb on it with eyes or something like that..and I use a detangler spray and..the newest add in is a new leave in conditioner from J&J, its awesome.

My mom used no more tangles on my hair when I was little and I remember seeing it in the store the other day. You spray it in on wet or dry hair so it should work when your daughter wakes up. If I remember right it also didn't leave my hair greasy or frizzy.

I agree with Megan! She may need a haircut to get rid of the dead ends. I have long thin hair and when it starts to tangle I know it's time for a cut.

Good Luck!

Hi Jesse-
My daughter, same age, has naturally curly hair and when she wakes up it is a ratty mess! The best thing that I have tried is spraying with infusium and then braiding her hair. This has really helped us.

I find your situation all too familiar. My 9 year old has long naturally curly hair and it is so thick and always a hassle to comb before school in the mornings. Rather than sending her to school with wet hair we would just always put it up. Then I started to put it in a pony tail at night. We would have it conditioned and washed that night, comb it really well, and just put it in a pony tail. Not to tight. It has worked rather well. She can get up in the morning and comb her own hair now.

I have a daughter that is 28 months old and her hair tangles terrible as well. I do use detangler spray on her hair, along with conditioner, which I think both help alot. Also, I have recnetly started sitting her on the counter as I need to brush her hair- as she has always hated having her hair brushed, and I tell her we are going to make her hair look like a princess and I let her tell me what princess she wants, such as Cinderella, Jasmine, etc. and then when we are done she stands up and looks at herself and doesn't make a peep while I do it. Also, I have started putting her hair in pony tails and/or braids at night. It SIGNIFICANTLY reduces the tangles they get during sleep.
