My Halloween Baby

My youngest turns a year old on Halloween. I have been trying to decide what kind of party would be fun. I was thinking about a costume party the Saturday before his birthday. A big Halloween celebration. I figured this is the best way for all the kids invited (they range from infants to 13 year olds) to have fun. We can have different Halloween themed games and lots of Halloween party favors (ie: glow necklaces or bracelets for safe trick or treating, etc.) and I could put them in Trick or Treating baskets (so they can use them on Halloween night). I thought about decorating with carved pumpkins and webs with plastic spiders, etc. My question is: If you went to a party like this, would you find it tacky or do you think your kids would have a blast? I mean, he was born on Halloween and I'm proud of that. It's always going to be a part of his life but I thought it would be kind of special and should create lots of good memories for family and friends. Also, some of the parents I know (including my husband and me) don't allow their children to trick or treat beyond family. This would be a great way for them to have an extra speical time and still get the stuff other kids get on Halloween. Also, if anyone has any ideas for food, invitations, or decorations, please help! lol

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I'll be checking into a lot of these places for supplies later on. I also decided I would put a note in with the invitations to let everyone know that scary costumes would probably be too much for this event. I also had to laugh because a few of you expressed how crazy I am and that you wouldn't have the energy to do what I do lol. My response: Yes, I'm absolutely insane. I don't really know what I was thinking but this last one wasn't planned. We wanted our first three really close together and we didn't even know if we wanted another child. I guess someone upstairs made that decision for me. =-) It's not really as hard as it sounds. I wasn't thrown into the mix with 3 kids and another on the way. It's a process and it gets easier as time goes by. Thanks again everybody and Happy Halloween if I'm too busy then to tell you.

BTW, please stop giving me links to party planners and such. I am thankful for your help and you might really just be trying to be nice. However, I do this for a living. I am an event planner. I'm sure her work is great but I'm sure I'll get a better price if I go through me...

Somne families don't agree with Halloween. A great way around this is a Story Book Character Party. Pretty much every costume out there is related to some kind of story book. You'll probably have all the same costumes coming but it won't be "halloween" for those who don't want it to be.

sound great to me. Just one word of warning: those glow in the dark necklaces should be kept away from toddlers. My daughter bit one open and covered her cloths with the goo inside. It M. be nontoxic but it isn't non staining.

I see you already have lots of responses which is great! I'll just add my two cents too and say we had costume parties the first 2 years for my son. He'll be 3 this year and we haven't decided. It was great for the kids to wear their costumes more than once. We kept it very low key at age 1, but we didn't have other age kids either. So, didn't do games or that kind of thing, just food, gathering, halloween decorations. Makes for a built in theme which for me is great! Enjoy!

I think it would be a GREAT idea. I think you should be proud of your son's birthday. Many parents try to have kids on special days like that. It would help those kids who can't trick or treat beyond family. The only problem you might have is with the older kids dressing a bit too scary for the younger ones. I say go for it have an all out blast!

My Daughter is November 1, so we are almost a halloween baby also, and her best friend is a halloween baby, so we get a whole week of parties. We have done costume parties a LOT!! they are great!!!! also, we don't trick or treat except for family either, so it gives the kids another chance to wear their costumes.(you need to get your $$ out of them you know...they ain't cheap!!) so YES!! do it!! GREAT idea, and you never have any problems finding goodies for everything! it has been a great success for us and also for our friends with the halloween baby.

I would have to say, yes it sounds like a lot of fun, but as your child gets older let him make the choice, he might get tired of it. My daughter was born on Valentine's Day, a little different in the aspect of everyone wants to be with their hunny on that day, you know. And, as her mom, I want to decorate in hearts and cute stuff, but I have to remind myself, we are celebrating her birthday and not V-day. But heck, I love dressing up at halloween, I would probably do it to if my kid was cool with it.

My youngest is actually going to turn 2 on Halloween. We had a costume party for her last year. She was the cutest Minnie Mouse I've ever seen. Anyway, it was a really big hit. We had so much fun. I had goodie bags simular to what you mentioned. What city do you live in? I live in Melbourne, and there's a store near me called Old Time Pottery, and I got a lot of decorations from there. I also got the bags for the pary favors there. I also got stuff from Home Depot, and Oriental Trading online (orientaltrading.com). That website has so many halloween ideas. My husband converted part of our garage into a haunted house, and we had several walk throughs (one for the kids that was not so scary, and a scary one for the adults). I'm a huge fan of Bounce Houses; they really keep the kids busy the whole time. Well, I hope you have fun.

Hi J.,

Yes! Great idea and I"m doing the same sort of thing for my Oct. 27th kid. He'll be 4 this year. I have used Party City, www.costumeexpress.com, Lillian Vernon and Oriental Trading Company for sources of Halloween items. Costume Express has sizes starting at baby and go up to adult. They have everything from Harry Potter to Capt. Jack Sparrow to Pooh. As for food, I haven't done anything special yet- try Food Network for ideas from past shows or some othe other online food/recipe sites. I do recall seeing a spooky punch idea last year and am looking for it. Good luck! Have fun!

I don't think it's tacky at all. I think it sounds fun! It is about your baby, so why not dress him up as a prince (or princess) so that all will know the celebration is for him/her?

Themes parties are wonderful and I would definately want to come. The kids will probably also think it's the best birthday bash ever.

Smashing cake and getting messy will be even more fun since it goes along with halloween. YOu could even do pumpkin carving contests or whatnot.

Knock yourself out and have a ball! Happy Birthday to Baby when you get there.

p.s. another child?! Are you crazy?! I envy you.. i only have enough patience for two and I'm still going insane. lol!

Ok, you are an events planner and can't see the flaw here?

This is a one year old. IF you are SO into a b-day party; and it will have to host kids of all ages; then, PICK A IDEA. Let's say....host a puppy party. It CAN cover all ages, on so many levels...and I promise, no 2 ppl will dress, act, or react the same.Good for you to think ahead. But, pls, spare yourself...don't over think this....all you really are after is 2 min with your child and the cake/cupcake/cookie/jello...etc.

This should be a no brainer for you....

I also have a son w/ an Oct bday. we do costumes w/in the theame....I give the kids (only the same number as his age) t-shirts that can be or ar already dressed up. I am about to host FOR FUN party and it's theame is penguins. I have visors and tee shirts to help make them feel the part...Ice blocks and squid on a stick...you are over-doing it and wasting your energry and money.

FYI...Halloween is my favorite holiday t play up....A one yr old is too young to understand it...wait 4 years...then the safe family fun ideas of the holiday will be more or use and entertainment.

J.- I LOOOOOOOOVE Halloween, so I would absolutely love a party like that! And I think the kids would have a blast. For decorations, I think Target has the cutest stuff, and cute favors in the seasonal section. I always used to get stuff there for my students when I was teaching. You also might find some cute and cheap favors and decorations at US Toy in Apopka. Michael's craft store (Or JoAnn's) usually has a lot, too, and I found some cute, cheap Jack-o-lanterns and scarecrows last year at Old Time Pottery. Oh, and my sister found the cutest candy corn string lights last year at AC Moore- the craft store next to Target on Colonial. And I was in Party City the other day, and they were already starting to unpack the Halloween stuff from boxes. By the way, you're my hero since you have the energy to do all this when you're pregnant and chasing two toddlers AND caring for a baby!! I don't know how you do it- I was so exhausted when I was pregnant with my second son and chasing my first around. I'm not worthy!! Have a great time!

God Bless You!! I thought I had my hands full with my clan! I think a Halloween party is perfect. My youngest will be 1 4 days before that and I plan on having a costume/birthday party too. Decorations for this can be a blast, but keep in mind if some of the kids are younger not to make them too scary, you don't want kids running out of your party screaming.
Good luck and have fun!
P.S. Where are you located?
