My Wedding Dress... UPDATED SWH

My wedding is Saturday, and my dress is mostly chiffon. I've had the dress for a couple months now, and it has been hanging in the large bag that I bought especially for it. The train is clipped up (by David's Bridal) in such a way as to limit wrinkling. However, I know when I take it out of the bag, it IS going to have some crease type wrinkles when I let it down. I'm thinking it will need steamed, but I don't have a steamer. My veil is borrowed, and it was stored (by my cousin) rather haphazardly in a bag, so it is also wrinkled and will need steamed.

Any thoughts? Am I going to need to get a steamer? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies... for the well wishes and for the steaming suggestions!

You all have been my biggest support through this wedding planning process and I truly don't know what I would have done without all you wonderful women (and a couple men) to bounce all my questions, ideas, dilemmas, etc. off of... so THANK YOU ALL from the bottom of my heart.

I'd get it out sooner rather than later and see what happens, mine was wrinkle free and stored just like they sent it home from the fitting with me (from David's as well). Careful with the veil, they are so delicate, a nice steamy bathroom may just do the trick.

I would think a local dry cleaners could help get the wrinkles out. I bet they have the right equipment.

Why not take it to a drycleaner and see if they can help?

Can't you take it to David' Bridal and have them do this? Or ask them where you can take it? I'm sure a cleaner could steam it out for you.

Do not spray anything on your dress, what if it stained it or left spots. You would be devastated. Call Davids Bridal and ask them if you can bring it in to get steamed.

A professional steamer is a wonderful thing to have. Do not use anything other than a real steamer. Walmart has them in their small appliance areas next to the irons. Do not try to iron it either, it will melt the material of your dress. When an iron steams it is because the surface of the iron is hotter than boiling, it makes the steam when it touches it. Even holding the iron sort of close and hitting the steam button will expose the fabric to the extreme heat and it will probably melt the fabric of your dress. In a steamer the heat source is inside the hose and there is not heat plate or heat source that can come in contact with the fabric.

Practice on similar fabric. You can buy a yard or less at a store like Hobby Lobby then practice.

Each person will find a particular way they like to steam fabric. I find I like holding the steamer under the fabric sliding it down, the steam vents facing me. My friend likes to steam from the top of the fabric. She tears the flap/top of a box off and places that under the fabric and uses it much like an ironing board. Steam burns quickly, it makes huge blisters due to IT"S HOT, it can even leave scars if it is not treated quickly by a medication like Silvadene. It takes practice a few times and you'll have the hang of it. Then you can whip out the steamer and steam your clothes easily.

One thing you might try, hand the dress in the bathroom away from the shower but close enough to feel the steam, fully opened up and hanging down long. Take a hot steamy shower or just turn on the shower and close the door, sometimes I have to stuff a towel under the door to keep the cooler temp form the hall out. Don't let the dress get wet but the steam should penetrate the fibers and release the wrinkles. Try it today so that if it doesn't work you can get it steamed by the store.

So:
1st choice: Store steams it again for free or minimal charge
2nd choice: hand in the bathroom while hot water is making steam.
3rd choice: Buy a real clothing steamer from a store like walmart and try it out on a similar fabric to learn how to use it. It is easy, can be used at the location of your wedding to touch up the wrinkles from transporting it to the venue. It can even be used on the skirt if it's held away from your skin while you have the dress on....my maid of honor did that to my dress at my second wedding. I had sat in my dress for about half an hour without thinking about the train being hooked up. My wedding started about 15 minutes late but I looked pristine.

Congrats on the marriage.

Can you hang the veil in a steamy bathroom?

Maybe that would work for the dress as well.

It's SO close--even I'm getting excited! :)

My veil was really wrinkled also. We hung it in the bathroom with the hot water running. Of course, we took our showers first. Make sure you do this at least the day before. Once the steam is in there for a while, you can run your hand (with a soft cloth over to make sure no oils get on the dress and veil) to smooth out the wrinkles.

I agree with calling Davids or a cleaner.

I had bought my white satin dress (13y ago) at JCPenney. My Grandma offered to get my dress ready. I had it hanging up. She offered to iron it. OhhKayyy... she pulls out my mom's rusty iron and heads for the dress! I yelled STOPPP!!!

The finally found a tan towel and turned the dress inside out. It took her 3 hours to 'steam press' the dress. She was such a wreck when she stopped that she had to go to the hotel and lay down and missed the rehearsal!

Good luck.
Words of wisdom for Saturday, from one that had just about everything 'hiccup' ... whatever happens, just roll with it. As long as you, your groom and the officiant show up, the rest is just gravy, pictures and memories...

Don't try to do this yourself! My mother, bless her heart, tried this with my veil and steamed a hole right through it. The poor thing, she felt so badly! She went out and got me a new veil and just could not stop crying over it. Of course, I forgave her instantly and was not mad at all.

See if you can have it taken somewhere to let a professional steam it.

First... I wish we could post pictures to this site! Have a wonderful wedding weekend and enjoy!

As for the wrinkles in the veil, if you take it out of the bag now and hang it up so that it is completely "undone", it will be fine by Saturday.

The dress... take it to a dry cleaner to be steamed, but do it today b/c they will probably need it for at least a day or two! When you get it home, take it out of the dry cleaner's bag and just let it hang until you put it on. Chiffon is beautiful, but if you get ANY water droplets on it, they will stain!

Just wanted to say congratulations...I have only followed from afar as I seem to miss all your wedding posts....

Have a beautiful, lovely day!!

Ditto going back to David's Bridal or a dry cleaners. I would not steam chiffon. It's too thin of a material and would probably shrink if you did not do it right.

My dress I left in the bag until the day of the wedding. It had no wrinkles or creases at all. I just found a tall hook and hung it carefully once it was out of the bag. As for the veil, I found that a steamy bathroom did the trick just fine. Run the shower and hang up the veil, it will be fine.

Congrats L., I can't believe its almost here already! Anyway, I trusted my mom to get my veil steamed before the wedding. Thats ALL she was asked to do. She waited until the night before when I was there staying the night and said "oh, I still need to steam your veil". She got the steamer out and IT WOULDN"T GET THE WRINKLES OUT!!! The wedding was at 10am the next morning. UGH. So my advice to you is to take it to a professional dry cleaners and have them do it. Good luck and congrats...have FUN!!!

There is something called wrinkle release, its a spray that TOTALLY removes wrinkles. It wont stain or damage, Ive used it on everything & carry it out with me, b/c I hate when I sit & get my skirt or pants all wrinkled up. Its in the drugstore here, laundry section, but Ive also found it in liquidation world, a sort of dollar/ discontinued stuff store. You spray it on & smooth the wrinkes, its like magic ;)
