seeking home remedy for nail (toes) fungus. I am currently applying tea tree oil to my daughter but find that it's taking a long time to "heal". Does there come a time you just have to go the traditional route of a prescription vs home remedy? Look forward to your replies as it has proven to be so reliable...thank you in advance!!

Iodine! If you can find de-colorized ( clear ) iodine you won't have the red stain, but either way, it should work in a week or so.

A little suggestion I got from my aunt when I was having trouble with my feet;

Try lathering her feet with Dial Antibacterial Soap(yellow). Let it dry, then rinse. Try this about 2-3 times a day. It's worth a try.

Has your daughter been on anitibiotics frequently or recently? Nail fungus can indicate a low level of "good bacteria" in the intestinal tract, which can be a result of antibiotics killing both good and bad bacteria. I have my own business as a wellness consultant, called Pure Life (you can view my business under alternative medicine in the Mamasource business guide) and highly recommend that your daughter take a probiotic to restore the good bacteria in her system. You can email me @ ____@____.com if you have further questions. Check out www.shaklee.net/cpeterson. Thanks!

Hi S.-CLOVE OIL!! It works great on the toes for that purpose-the fungus will have to grow out. We do not do prescriptions or OTC meds and have been studying herbs and naturals for years. A great reference book (my bible) you can get at any major book store is Alternative Medicine--the Definitive Guide-it has research and holistic remedies from doctors for over 20years. It is worth a $40.00 investment!!

You are right about the fact that it is a very slow process. You are definitely on the right track using Tea Tree, it is excellent, however, Healthy Nail Blend which has 7 different essential oils including tea tree has proven to be very effective. These 7 oils have anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-bacterial properties (and many more) but when you put them together you get a very powerful synergy. It's all natural no side effects. It is recommended that you use it twice a day until the nail grows out completely. I am not sure how long it would take for a child's nails to grow out, for an adult - fingernails takes about 6-8 months and toenail takes 12-18 months. The biggest problem is being consistent. Definitely better than medication which affects the liver and kidneys.

I think you can try rubbing Vick's Vapo Rub on it. I heard it helps yellow nails but I don't know if that is the same problem. By the way, if it's rubbed on a child's feet it alleviates night-time coughing!

I worked for a podiatrist for many years and there isn't much that can get rid of fungus. I have known people to use vicks, but have never met anyone who it actually worked for.
I would suggest going to a podiatrist. There are many topical treatments they can try.
Good Luck!

Hello,

I had the same problem with nail fungus and went to my podiatrists. He recommended Vicks VaporRub for 6 weeks. The results have been amazing.. It costs approx $12 and needs no prescription. Use at night (too smelly during the day) with white socks so as not to spoil bedding. Also use afterschool. Keep feet clean and rub generously, it has all the active ingrediants to rid of fungus.

good luck

I am a nail tech and have had clients use Vicks for several months but i would ask a podiatrist for sure. You should cut the nail back as much as possible, where the fungus is, the white part. Then disenfect the clippers you used so you do not spread it to others. Keep cutting the part of the nail off that is lifted from the nail bed. If you dont, you are letting moisture get trapped under there and it will only help the fungus grow.

This isn't a home remedy, but it's over-the-counter so you don't need a prescription. I have a toenail with recurring fungus, & it works to treat it with a small amount of Lamisil lotion morning & evening, BEHIND the top of the nail & under the cuticle. It always takes time for the fungal appearance to disappear, though--a couple of months or more.

Tea tree oil is the solution, yes. It DOES take time though. I've got one toenail that I have been applying tea tree oil to for 4 months now and I have faith in it working, it just takes time to grow it out. Just keep doing what you're doing and stay patient.

Has your child been on antibiotics over the years? try rubbing Vicks vapor rub on the nails, remove sugar from her diet and probiotics supplements for her gut, antibiotics knock down good intestinal bacteria and it needs to be replaced. And any time your using a natural treatment it does take longer but doesn't have the side effects.

Anything (including prescriptions) is going to take at least a year for toes and 6 mths for fingernails to grow out and be gone completely. That's what the doctor told my husband. Try to get this taken care of as soon as possible before it spreads to other nails.

I have also read that it feeds off of sugar since it is a fungus. I realize that it really hard to stop eating sugar, but that could help, as could Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE). It is a very bitter flavor, but you can get it from Fruitful Yield and probably Whole Foods.

I hope to goes well.

My dermatologist said it is almost impossible to get rid of it once it has taken hold without spending a lot of money on antibacterial medicatations for a long long time. I told her that I had it when I was 30 years old. I went to the foot dr. and he suggested to remove the nails..they are not guaranteed to grow back but if you keep the area moist with medicine and then continue to rub vaseline (once the area is healed) on the healed area until the nail grows out your chances are better of new growth. You must keep the area moist because the nail bed callouses and then the nail can't grow. I bet it took 8 months of applying the vaseline 3 times a day but they healed and were fine.

there are and if it doesn't work the best thing even we try to avoid the Dr they can help the best and you may consider cause you don't want this to spread to other family members, it may take a oral fungus medication and or a prescription cream, I had nail fungus on my toes for a while and nothing i did worked, i went to my skin Dr and had lamisil medication for 12 weeks plus the creams and its all cleared now, this may not be your case but by seeing the Dr your gonna tackle the problem with a professional who knows how to treat it and your worries will be over

Hi

My hubby had this problem also, he was on meds from the doctor ( forgot what it was called) But you had have have a blood test every 6 weeks to make sure that his liver was not being damaged from the meds. He did do this but it never helped with the nail fungus at all. So he tried the vicks vaporub, he put it on in the morning and at night and within a month it was gone. And was about 8 yrs ago and it has never came back.

Try soaking the nail in plain old vinegar. It doesn't smell as strong as Vapor Rub, and it works great. It does take a long time, just like any of the treatments. With all of them, you have to wait for the bad nail to grow out, and the new to replace it. Don't get impatient, just soak the affected toes for several minutes each night, and don't give up. It's inexpensive, and it works. By the way, even the medications that the doctors give you will take as long as six months or more to show you any real results, and they are extremely expensive and are often not covered by insurance.

Good luck!

Vicks vapor rub. Put it on, under and around the nail. It does take a long time to get rid of it by any means, but the Vicks does work. On average, it takes 6 months to 1 year for a nail to completely replace. The prescription remedies have so many bad side effects and sometimes don't even get rid of it.

Take her to her doctor immediately. She can losse the nail if left untreated for too long, and it can be contagious depending on the type of fungal infection it is. When I was in cosmetology school we were taught to refer someone to a dotor if we saw that and not to preform pedicures or manicures on them. This is actually an Illinois State Law. Hope this helps in aiding your decision.

My mom swears by Vicks Vapo Rub. She read about it in a newspaper once and it worked on her. She applies it to her toe and then puts socks on. She did say that it takes a while (weeks to months) to heal but you will notice results sooner that that. My husband has the same issue and notices that his is better when he cuts back on sugar and wheat in his diet. He has just started the Vicks remedy. We'll see! Good luck!
