Nap and Teething

I have two questions. First, my daughter (17mths) has started only taking one nap a day. She goes down for her first nap at 10:00am and usually will sleep until 12:00 or 12:30. I still put her down for her second nap around 3:00 and if she sleeps, great, if not, thats fine too, but I still put her down for quiet time. My question is should I move her morning nap to a little later time? It seems to be working ok the way it is now, but occasionally she is a little grouchy before bath and bed time which is 7:00pm.
Second question....she has 4 top teeth and two bottom teeth. I just noticed this morning that she has a molar coming in. I am making her an appointment for next week, but I was wondering how often this occurs. I'm sure there is nothing to do about this, it is what it is, just curious as to what your dentist said.

Thanks for reading!!

What can I do next?

I think you should move her naptime later and she probaly only needs one nap. I think I nap a day is sufficient for her age. My daughter is 17 months (goes to daycare) and she started one nap a day at 12 months. At school they have naptime from 12-2:30. She really only actually naps from 12- 1:30. On the weekend she naps from 11am-2pm. When she switched to one nap a day I moved her bedtime to an earlier time as well.

Check out this teeth eruption chart thats pretty cool.

My daughter never showed any signs of teething until she got her top molars. They finally came in (they're huge!). But now the bottoms ones are coming in. Ugh!

The following article by Kyle Pruett, M.D., provides excellent insight on this topic. The link below has more details as well:

Children’s sleep issues are among the more challenging developmental stages for parents to master.  But biology is on the parents’ side in this one, because sleep patterns mature over time just like other developmental skills.

* Polls tell us that one-third of American children and their parents sleep together some or most of the time before children start school. Co-sleeping varies hugely by culture and ethnicity. So think about what you want to do, and discuss the pros and cons with your pediatrician.
* Make sure your crib is safe (locking rails), that your older child’s ‘big bed’ has side rails, and if you are co-sleeping, that there is plenty of room.
* The human brain is active during sleep, but the deepest sleep is typically at the beginning of the night.  Babies spend more time than older children in stimulating REM sleep, with eye movements and irregular breathing. Don’t worry about all that action in your child’s body – it too is growth.
* Start them young – do not ignore the importance of naps, watch for the yawn, and start bedtime early in the evening.
* The transition from crib to bed is also a time of sleep pattern changes, but most kids want it to work.
* To instill good sleep habits remember that consistency matters so much:

My son is 16mos and we are working between 2 naps and 1. It all depends on the day with him. If he gets up early, then we do 2 naps. If he wakes up late and isn't cranky then we keep him up a little longer and do 1 nap. I also try to do quiet time around 3 or 4 because I need to get stuff done for dinner ;) He goes to bed around 7 as well. I think 1 or 2 naps is fine and figure out what works for you two.

As for the teeth - my son has 6 teeth on top, 6 teeth on bottom and all 4 molars. I just felt the back of his mouth and I think his next molars are starting - his is drooling like crazy. His two side teeth came in just before the center ones but then they all seemed to fill in together. I am sure it is fine.

Her teeth erupting is fine! Relax! They should be coming in that way.

As for naps, if it is working for you, then great. If not, push it a little later each day until you have a time that suits you.

Good Luck
