My husband and I are considering delivering at North Hills Hospital in North Richland Hills. I'm wondering if any of you have delivered there and what the facility offers in the way of completely natural childbirthing? Do they have whirlpools? Birthing balls? Birthing bars? Do they allow you two walk around? Can you go IV free?
Also, were the nurses pretty on-board with med free birthing?
Thanks so much for the info ladies!

EDIT: Hey ladies, one more question: did the hospital have at least a bathtub to labor in? My husband said he was very uncomfortable with a birthing center, but I might just have to be convincing him its the way to go! Thanks again!

What can I do next?

Hi, My name is A. Crowell and I own Gentle Beginnings Birth Center. I just wanted to correct an error that was spoken by Lisa F. I'm not sure who she talked to but we of course have resucitation equipment for babies and mama's. We carry oxygen, ambu bags, IV fluids and the drugs for the most common complications. We have only had to call 911 for a baby one time in the three years that we have been open. We were able to do the emergency procedures until the ambulance got there and transported the baby. That baby is a happy healthy two year old now. Good for you for seeking out your options for a good labor and birth. The Harris Downtown Midwives will let you birth in the birth tub and so will Denton Presbyterian if you birth with Dr. Fred Cummings. Hope this helps in your search and we would be happy to do a question and answer appointment with you at no charge if your interested.
Blessings,

A. Crowell, CPM, LM

I am sorry that I can't help with information about North Hills Hospital, but I would like to highly recommend Gentle Beginnings Birth Center on Harwood Rd in Hurst (www.gentlebeginningsbc.com) just up the road from North Hills Hospital. I had our first son there almost two years ago because I wanted a safe, intervention free option, and will be working with one of the midwives there again this time for the birth of our second son.

They offer waterbirth and birthing balls, birthing chairs, the ability to move as needed, drink and eat as needed, no IVs, no heplocs, and were VERY supportive and attentive.

It is a different philosophy from a hospital, but well worth investigating. I made the switch from the hospital to the birth center at 28 weeks with our first son.

I hope you find the information you need and can make the best choice for you and your family.

I have four sons and the first two were born at Horth Hills Hospital. At the time I lived in North Richland Hills and didn't see the point in driving past a hospital to go to another one. I loved North Hills Hospital. It is a small hospital so you get very individual attention. (My sister delivered downtown and didn't receive that attention). I delivered mine naturally and the staff there was very encouraging and supportive through the whole process. They had a birthing ball, rocking chairs and allowed me to walk around. They didn't even care that my water broke in the hallway when I was walking around. They cleaned it up for me and let me keep walking. They do not have an option for water births but would of let me be in the shower to relieve some pressure if I wanted to do that.

The only reason I didn't deliver my second two there was because we moved and they were twins. I wanted to go to a hospital that had a level 3 NICU in case we needed it. It turned out we did.

Good luck and congrats!!

Hi! All I can help with is that 10 months ago when I delivered I had called EVERY hospital in the mid-cities/FW/Denton area and NONE of them except Harris Downtown FW have tubs, not even the brand new women's one! It's crazy! Then even at the Harris only the old rooms (they are remodeling everything there) have them, the new ones just have showers :( Yes, Gentle Beginnings in Hurst is the only birth center in the area. The main reason we didn't choose them (I'm married to a dr. so it was hard to convince him anyways) but at least a year ago Gentle Beginnings has no rescicitation devices for a newborn. The can only do CPR, which according to my husband would be useless and by the "5 minutes" it took the abulance to get there with the device it would be too late. Now, we live in Haslet so we looked at the birth center in Denton too and that one has all the tools necessary if something did go wrong with the baby. He would have been okay with the one in Denton and I personally liked it better too so if that's an option for you you may check into that but I know it's farther. So in the end, I went with the midwives at the Harris DT. I loved all the midwives there, my only complaint would be the wait time in the waiting room is pretty ridiculous (usually an hour!). But I would just bring a book and knew to expect that so I was okay - it was harder though because I have an older one too so I tried to get my mom to watch him. Anyways, the Harris DT midwives (they are attached to the hospital) will let you use the tubs (if they are still there!), have all the tools you mentioned and let you walk around, etc. The nurses I had were great too. I ended up being induced because I was two weeks late and the baby was getting huge, otherwise no iv (just the hep lock but you can even say no to that if you wish). HTH and good luck! The BIGGEST thing that helped me was using the home course from Hypnobabies...it is amazing! I used Bradley with my first and it did NOTHING :(
