So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. You all made me very hungry LOL!!! Unfortunatly I cannot do any nuts or peanut butter yet. My DD has seasonal allergies and her allergy Doc said to wait until she was 3 to introduce those. TOTAL bummer.

Here is what I ended up doing..

Rice Chex
Frosted Rice Chex
Mini Dinosaur Ritz
Golden Raisins
M&Ms
Goldfish Pretzels
Chocolate Covered Pretzels

How does that sound?? Weird?? I kinda just made it up. LOL. I havent made it yet so if it sounds yucky...tell me!!! :)

try chex.com, they have a whole bunch of recipes for chex mix other than the original, altho I am partial to original chex mix myself, just made a batch myself and I have a 2 yr old who LOVES it. You can add what you want, omit the nuts and add smaller cereals like cheerios...

Have you ever made the pretzels with the kisses in them? SUPER easy and yummy! Just use the round pretzels, put a Hershey's kiss (unwrapped of course) in the center. Put in the oven (300 degrees) for about 3 minutes, just enough to make the kisses soft. Then squish down the kiss with a M&M. I just sent some to school with my 5 year old and everyone loved them!

I used to make "toothy smiles" with my sister's kids.

Slice and apple into 8ths or 16ths. Take some fruit dip (but premade from store or make your own), put it on one slice and put another slice on top of it. Cut mini marshmallows in half the long way and put in between the two slices (to look like teeth). Use red apples (so they look like lips).

The kids liked helping make them. It's like an edible craft project! It's a fairly healthy snack.

I usually find the best ideas in the small cookbook magazines that you can get at the checkout counter in the grocery store. (Betty Crocker?) They'll have kid editions with snacks and kid friendly meals. Maybe try the Betty Crocker Website.

Hi, I am not the guru of all that are yummy...my experience in nutrition was forcefully overrun by my husband and children's love of everything with shiny labels, but I can give you a few pointers. :o) Making your own snack mix is a wonderfully creative rainbow of choices. Just start with the basics that you already know about healthy eating and the things you already know your child loves. For example, her favorite chex cereals, knowing she may not be keen on the wheat but loves the rice or corn varieties. This is how you can tailor a snack to any child's food allergies or preferences. Broken pretzels are flexible and add crunch and salty. Add her (or your) favorite dried fruit, such as banana chips, apricots (very healthy) or dried cherries or cranberries. MMMM...If you like to spend time in the kitchen, it is fun to make your own miniature granola bites to throw in, for the oat and sweet and crunch factors. Just take 2 cups minute-oatmeal, or the old-fashioned for more bulk, and add honey, half a cup of lowfat strawberry yogurt, some cinnamon, maybe raisins or dates(very healthy)and combine with a quarter cup of low saturated-fat oil like safflower or sunflower (and you can skip the oil for any reason) Stir until it is packable and place in little balls on a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes or until dry and crispy. If they are too crumbly, and an egg or ground flaxseed, just a tablespoon or two. If they need more sweet or moisture add a favorite JuicyJuice, like cherry or mixed berry or orange(goes nicely with cranberries). Just a few tablespoons does the trick...so if you keep your confidence high and write down your likes and dislikes, you can improve your version until it's perfect. You can mix the Chex cereals in a variety of butter or margarine seasoned oils. Add parsley, garlic onion, or whatever seasoning blend your child has not refused to three tablespoons of butter and one quarter cup of canola(any oil you like) and mix well, baking at 350 to no more than 400, just to crisp them up again. The key is not too much water in any of the mixes and keeping the oven from being too hot. Hope that helped, it's easy and gives you variety. XO L.

You cant go wrong with puppy chow! Chex cereal, powered sugar, peanut butter, and chocolate! melt the choc, and the peanut butter put the cereal in a brown paper bag (1 box) dump the choc and the peanut butter in and then the powered sugar and shake it up (the bag shaking part is a good thing for the kids to help with) ENJOY!!!

I just tried this one for the first time this year - it's easy & older kids could help you make them (cheap too!). I didn't include the milk or butter with mine & the carmel got a little too chewy - I doubt you'd have to add as much as they're asking for in the recipe to cut down on the fat a bit. :)

MARSHMALLOW TREATS
------------------

2 bags large marshmallows
1 bag Kraft caramels
1 can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
1 stick butter
Rice Krispies

Melt caramels, milk and butter in pan over water. When smooth and creamy take toothpicks and put in marshmallows to dip in caramel mixture. After dipped roll in Rice Krispies.
