Need a Reliable Kid Thermometer!

What kind of thermometer do you use for your kids? I have two underarm ones and an ear one and they all give me different readings. My son was burning up last night and the underarm ones registered 97.1 and 97.8. I know you add a degree, but still. I didn't try the ear one on him this time because he has infections in both ears. The underarm ones both seem to hover around 97 even when he clearly has a fever.

We're treating the ear infections w/prescribed drops, and I need to keep tabs on his temp to know if we need to go back for a general antibiotic. What type/brand of thermometer can you rely on? Is there a trick to the underarm one?

Thank you!

What can I do next?

We have a "Summer" (??).

That's the namebrand I saw on it (box is long gone). It's digital, about the size of a walkman (dating myself) and has a cord that attaches to 3 different attachments - mouth, underarm and butt.

We love it. Does it all automatically and fast. And very easy to unattach the one and double check with another attachment.

We use this one:
Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer with ExacTemp Technology
It's $38 on amazon, no tax, free ship. We love it and it's the same one our pediatrician uses. The kids love it too--they like to take their own temperature. Just have to make sure to do both ears. I'm sorry I don't know anything about the forehead ones.

I use the target brand ear thermometer. Works great and was cheap. Just buy a couple batteries as long as you are at the store. We have illnesses month inbetween and sometimes when I need it the battery is dead and I need to go find one before I get a good reading. Price doesn't always mean it's a good one. Also under arm takes way too long for my kids at least.

We have the Exergen Temporal Scanner. You swipe it across the forehead.

I love it and have given it as a gift for baby showers. It's awesome.

We use the vicks one that you swipe along the forehead. It seems pretty accurrate, and is "idiotproof" in that it displays green for normal, yellow for mild fever, and red for high fever. Its absolutely non invasive, and takes only seconds to use. A bit pricey though. Got ours at CVS for nearly $50.00.

Good luck to you and yours,
F. B.
