What about a collague or photo album of your family "growing up"? Although, if you're anything like me, your photos aren't exactly organized. You can also get them something like a gift card/certificate to a play or sporting event (if they're into that sort of thing). You could even do something as simple as a really nice bottle of wine/champagne. Sometimes Crate & Barrel has stemware on clearance, and you could go to Big Lots or other discount type store for a basket and "filler" and put together a nice gift basket. Sorry - these ideas may not have been too helpful. Good luck on your quest!

Grandparents love pictures of their grandkids! I would buy a nice frame-possibly one with a 40th theme (I think Hallmark has them). I would give it to them empty with a note that the picture of them and their beautiful granddaughters will fill it soon. Take a nice picture of them together with the kids at the party and then mail it to them...what a great way for them to remember the day. If they are like my parents, they don't want you to spend a lot of money anyway-just something thoughtful. Good luck & have a safe trip.

For my parents' 40th anniversary we did three things, all of which they still love and talk about.
We did a calendar using their wedding photographs and pictures of their children and their families.
We did a video greeting card, all of their childen and their families wished them a happy anniversary and stated what they had learned from their marriage and use in their own family. The video ended with their wedding photos to love songs playing in the background.
Lastly, we did a huge family photo. Each adult child and their family posed with our parents, then a photo with my parents and all their children, then all the grandchildren, and lastly the whole klan.
They have now been married for 51 years and like I said they still talk about their 40th. We weren't able to top that for their golden anniversary, we just repeated the same gifts. It doesn't cost a lot of money, just some coordination and planning. We used all our own equiptment, no professional photographers or videographers. Good luck and congratulations to your in laws.

Dear C.,
Your husband, your children, and you coming 350 miles to see them is a great and heartfelt gift. But if you need to do something else besides that, bring a card, or go to a Hallmark location and make up your own. There are memory books out there for anniversaries. You could give them one, and then they fill in the details on their own. You fill out anything you want too.
A favorite plant or bush is also a nice gift. Plant a tree in their names. You can go online and do this. A card will be sent to them letting them know. Gifts certificates are nice to favorite restaurants for lunch. Gift certificates to the movies are nice if they like to go to the show. I hope some of these ideas help you. Enjoy your weekend!
