For a 5 year old girl having a princess party. I don't want to get a bunch of princess stuff b/c I am sure she will get a ton of that. Would movie tickets be a good idea or does that say "Invite my daughter to go with you"? I just want to get her something she will use, not something that gets played with for a day &then forgotten about.
One of my favoirte gifts is to buy a cheap but cute or sparkly wallet at Target and fill it with a gold dollar coin, a lip gloss, and a gift card to a bookstore or an ice cream or smoothie shop. Can usually do it for under $15.
The movie card is nice, but since she can't really go by herself, it seems like too old a gift. And good kid movies are few and far between.
I love to buy magazine subscriptions for birthday gifts because it is something they will enjoy all year. There is a Disney Princess magazine that is published about 6 times a year. You can give a little card with a candy bar or small toy tied to it and a note that tells them about the subscription. Highlights or National Geographic Kids are also great magazines at this age.
My son once got movie tickets all themed up with popcorn and candy and he really had no clue about it (liked the candy though!) IMO this is not a good gift for a child of that age. IF you want her to like her present that is....sounds like you are going more for the parents liking it so maybe you should just give the tickets. I would not worry about them thinking that it is a suggestion to invite your daughter along though.
I think movie tickets are a great idea! We did that for a long time and my kids loved getting them in return. I don't think it implies to the girl that she should invite your daughter - never did with any of my kids' friends on either side of it.

My daughter just turned 5 yesterday and my sister sent her a package with some balloons aired up with $1 in each one. She sent about 10 balloons. DD loved it! She also got a little purse that you color on with markers that she loved.

How about some Lego Friends. They're Legos for girls. My daughter loves them and she's 5. Also if she has Barbies then some clothes for them. Or if she has an american doll (or an 18" doll) you can get some clothes. My daughter loves dressing up her dolls in clothes. A cute princess flashlight, cute water bottles. Fishing gear if her family goes fishing. You can get pink tackle boxes. Hair accessories, cute jewelry, lip gloss, nail polish.
When my daughter was that age and fully into the princess stage she loved things such as a princess sleeping bag, chair, tent, drawing desk & handmade blankets. She's much too big for all of the items except she has kept the blankets. The people who made them got a template off the internet and they're essentially tied together not sewn. I know she loved having those types of items instead of just more toys.
When in doubt, I just do a gift card. Can't go wrong with that, and kids love to be able to go pick something out from the store themselves. To make them more "fun" to open, I still wrap it up in a box. In fact, for my nephew this year, I wrapped it in like 5 boxes and he thought that is was hysterical - everytime he opened a box there was another wrapped box underneath!
My son is five and the girls he is friends with are into My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears. There is lots of all of that stuff at Toys R Us.

no makeup - unless you know mom is okay with it.. I was not/am not okay with makeup for little girls both for the meesage it sends and because the little girl makeup is appalling in the chemicals in it.
hair accessories are great if she has longer hair
games and puzzles are also great
dot to dot books always are a big hit too.
I would hold off on the tickets. She's kind of young so she's not going to be able to go by herself. You'd need to do a gift certificate to the movies, which isn't going to be much fun to open!
I would do a jewelry making craft set. They have tons of them at Toys R Us. We gave a couple of kits to my niece for Christmas (same age) and she LOVED them!
What about bubble bath and shampoo and a new towel in a cute basket? sort of consumable.
