Need Help Finding My Five Year Old Piano Lessons

I am new to the area and would like to get my five year old started on piano lessons. He knows his abc's and shows a huge interest in music. I am looking for a good teacher that is not overly expensive and of course good with young kids. Also, one that is honest in telling me if he is ready or not.

What can I do next?

J.,

We have been taking lessons at All About Music (Jones and Cypress North Houston Rd) for 4 years. Both of my sons take there and we have been happy. Ms. Jana is our teacher.

Good luck,
C.

Hi, J.,

My name is J. Lee-Baker. I am a piano teacher and have been teaching for over 10 years. I would be happy to schedule a free mini-lesson for your son to evaluate his readiness for piano lessons. Which area do you live in?
I am located in West Houston near Highway 6 and I-10. If you do not live around here, I can also refer you to teachers in your area. Please feel free to e-mail me any questions about piano lessons.

Generally, children are ready by age five. The two main indicators for readiness are attention span and muscle development of the hands.

Thank you,
J. Lee-Baker

Hi J.,
Jean Lee-Baker of Red Eyed Bunny Piano Studio is located in the Eldridge/Briar Forest area of West Houston. She is an excellent teacher (BA from UT and MA from Columbia)and not only gives lessons to young children aged 4+, she also gives musical movement classes for infants and toddlers... She is obviously great with children..gentle and soft-spoken.. I think you will like her. You can reach her at ###-###-#### or ____@____.com.

My two oldest daughters (ages 6 and 9) take piano lessons at All About Music and Arts on Cypress N. Houston Rd. (they have a website). Ms. Linda is the director and is fantastic. They have Ms. Kate and she is my personal favorite piano teacher---many of their teachers already have degress focused on music pedagogy (teaching) or performance, so I've been very impressed with the selection of teachers they offer to get a perfect fit...and the prices are good. It's very crowded int he evenings, but right after school is very nice and especially on Friday afternoons it's almost totally empty in there and doesn't give you a feel like it's a busy music school. You can also contact The Music Rack on Kuykendahl in Spring for a ton of private piano teachers who teach in their homes or at that music store. You can also contact the Kingwood Humble Music Teachers Association website and get a link to see who's affiliated with them and then interview them. You can also check on Craigslist (it sounds funny, but true). And you can also call some high school orchestra directors for referrals or some large area churches for referrals. Best wishes. Music is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children!
